I'm in the middle of wiring up my compressor. I'm going to install a toggle switch in the garage (the compressor is in the basement on the opposite side of the house). I'm simply wiring the toggle switch in series with the pressure switch. The starter will only turn on if both switches are closed. The only thing is I have to run two extra wires for the switch.

So simply interrupt one of the two wires going to the pressure switch with a toggle and I'm all set. Seems easy enough

Found this switch while at homedepot, wouldn't this work to run a 30 amp double pull breaker to this switch and from switch to mag starter on compressor? Then I can simply flip switch off for over night?

You can do something like that, however that switch is only 2 hp rated. You'll need a switch that's 5 hp rated, since you have a 5 hp compressor. The Leviton MS302-DS switch is basically the same but it's 5 hp rated.

Good eye, not sure how I missed that. Guess its my luck, they don't stock the one I need at my local store :lol_hitti

OK,

So I have a 5HP compressor with a 240V magnet motor starter.

Motor Starter 5hp 1ph 230V definite purpose magnetic motor starter from Square D 8911dpsg32v09
Definite Purpose Magnetic Motor Starter, Number of Poles 2, 30 Amps AC, Coil Volts 208 to 240VAC, Enclosure NEMA Rating 1, HP @ 1 Phase - 120V 2, HP @ 1 Phase - 240V 5, Nonreversing, 50/60 Hz.

Pressure switch is:
Furnas 69

It will all be mounted installed in an enclosed porch on the other side of the wall from the shop.

I would like a switch inside the shop to turn on and off the compressor.

So what kind of switch and where in the circuitry does it go?

Bill

With a magnetic starter, any light switch rated for 250V or higher will do (I believe all are nowadays). Just wire it in series with the pressure switch.

So since its on the pressure switch is low voltage a toggle switch like this would work?

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Gardner-Bender-20-Amp-Single-Pole-Toggle-Switch-1-Pack-GSW-121/100117400

A low voltage switch would not work, because the control (coil) voltage is probably the line voltage (unless you have a transformer providing low voltage for the coil). However, that switch shows a 277V rating, so it would be fine to interrupt the pressure switch, assuming there was a motor starter contactor it was controlling.

A 5 horse power or 4 kilowatt magnetic switch Single phase would be required. Unless of course a manual switch with a five horse power rating is obtained.

Turn off the air at the compressor instead of the electricty

Or you can buy basically the same thing from Amazon for half the price. I have the one from Amazon and it works great. This particular valve uses DC - so you probably have an old wall wart transformer laying around that you could use. When you power up the valve, it opens, when you cut the power, it closes by a spring. There are a number of ways of turning the transformer on/off - z wave, wifi outlet, light switch etc etc. One advantage of turning off the air is when you turn it back on - you don't have to wait for the compressor to come up to pressure

Sorry I don’t mean to hi-jack the thread but thank you Git for posting this info. This solves a problem I was trying to overcome in designing the air system in my new shop.

Apologies to the OP for the slight detour.....

Your question was answered correctly with post #6 and #7.
You'll only need to drill a hole in the starter enclosure if there isn't one already.
It will work regardless of coil voltage.

Thank you, seems the easiest way to achieve a switch. Amazed they don't come from the factory with one.
