Been thinking about mounting small shop vacs by each machine. Dragging the big old unit around the shop just doesnt seem like the best way.
Not going to spend $180 for each one though.

I searched Amazon and found this sucked the most...for a decent price. Get a vac that has a hard...fireproof type of canister in case you **** up something from welding or that could combust...

Hose reel is great too....

I purchased a used with new motor central vac unit for houses.
This thing works great , and for $100.
Check CL or call your local supplier and check prices

^^^I have this one and NEVER use it - it ***** and not in a good way. Small diameter hose. Have to walk back to the unit to turn on/shut off. Just don't like it at all.

YMMV.

Agreed, I have it and am disappointed for the $$. I should have just bought a rolling shop vac.

Got any info for the hose reel and hose kit you are using? I'm assuming you can turn the vacuum on and off from the end of the hose?

Coxreel has one made for the vac hose...200...the hose I got on amazon...75' I think...reaches diveway, boats outside...works awesome. I think it was about 75 bucks.

I bought a $10 remote switch and attached it to the hose end...that is a great feature...

I welded up the mount bracket...added the rollers too...

You can see the plug switch and taped on remote on the hose end...the rollers are a nice add if you want...

I don't get it. I see the switch, but how is it connected? Wirelessly? I was expecting to see a control wire taped all along the hose

Wireless...you can get them for 10 bucks most anyplace...I think they started out for christmas lights...I use them for several things including turning on the lights in an outdoor shed....

Love central vacs. You have have MASSIVELY powerful motors- FAR better than any dyson, roomba, or any portable vacuum. (Look a 'inches of water' along with 'CFM' to judge the power.)

Then vent the vacuum to the outside- this way 'filtering efficiency' really doesnt matter. Heck, just eject all the dirt outside. (not quite of course-the filter protects the motor).

I have a Beam central vac with two outlets in the garage- one between the two doors, for use when detailing outside.

If you are spending $500 on a garage vac, perhaps consider spending the extra $$ and install a central house vac. If you have crawl space or attic, and can DIY it may not be that hard.

It should be remembered and understood that a vacuum cleaner has an air pump as part of the system. These vacuum pumps are not positive displacement. How well these pumps work has everything to do with how precise the pump is made. Many of the domestic shop style vacuum cleaners use a high speed pump, AKA centrifugal fan to improve efficiency.
The vacuum pump, pumps the available air out of the system and leaves a reduced pressure area behind the pump. It is the atmospheric pressure that tries to enter the vacuum and balance the pressure. So, what is happening when a vacuum cleaner is working as it should, the dirt is being blown into the vacuum hose.
I have an expensive built-in vacuum system in my shop. I have not used the built-in vacuum in maybe 10 years. What I chose for the shop is three SHOP-VAC units. I have one Shop Vac mounted at the rear of my milling machine and this vac also serves the small lathe.
I have a larger Shop-Vac on wheels for the bigger Southbend Lathe and all other shop duties. The third and smallest Shop-Vac is behind my JUKI sewing machine. I use this little vac to pick up bits of thread and scrap trimmings.
I bought this small vac at a garage sale and I thought it must be full of water because it was very heavy and moving around inside. At the next garage sale I opened the vacuum to have a look. The tank was filled with Granville Island beer and a mixture of water and ice. This explains why the people from the garage sale were running after me when I drove away. It was pedal-to-the-metal
