most times when a customer will not give his social to me when I add him in the pc, is because he owes another dealer a pile of money. I do not run your credit unless you are fully aware of that.
I do not pre check customers until we start talking about the big stuff. then by that time you are once again fully aware that your credit score is vital to the financing of more expensive items.
Only 1 guy in 8 years has refused the social security number and he did owe a dealer about 1500 bucks from 5 years previous. it did match name and dob eventually.
I didnt know a lot about turning wrenches, but I adapt very well and have actually learned a lot of stuff over the years. I ask questions about what guys are doing if I do not understand it. I will not attempt to rebuild a motor anytime soon.

Just tell your dealer that your credit is the owrst he has ever seen and he will leave you alone.

I would refuse it on principle - unless I suppose, I was applying for an SO corporate loan for a box.

I usually will shoot the **** for a few hours a month with my SO toolman. See him 2-4 times a month. More if I need stuff. My son and I will, every so often, jump on at one stop and ride with him through town. My son likes to run out and give the tool orders to the guys. I think we're going to train him (he's four years old) to go up to the cheapo techs who haven't paid, and say "You owe Mr. XXXXX $124 dollars, and I'm collecting his money for him."

I do have however someone in my.....employ we will call it....that does go door knocking at 5AM on sundays if needed  Its a rare occasion, but unfortunately it has its place.

I've heard stories from a guy I work with that used to work with a tool man, that they'd know the local bars, hangouts, and even the church where the guy frequented. When he didn't pay his bill, they'd show up at those places, after going to his house, etc.

Lately, I can't stand the Snap-on and Matco dealers that come around. It seems they have turned from a knowledgeable tool rep to a annoying door to door salesman type. Instead of asking if I need anything, they shove some overpriced POS thats on "sale" in my face telling me how great it is before they even say hi. Maybe its the economy hitting them hard, I dont know... But just based on their attitude they're not going to be getting anything from me except broken tools for warrenty. Is this happening to you guys/gals too?

I don't believe in giving someone the hardsell. If you are selling a quality product, with a lifetime warranty, and at the right price, then it will sell itself.

I have a small Fab & Repair shop. When my old tool dealer quit, the guy that took his route came by once. I told him that I didn't need anything at that time and he has never returned. This is what bugs me. I miss the tool truck showing up at the shop but I now buy most tools I need online. I guess the new guy is making so much money that he doesn't need my business.

I'd be interested in hearing some stories about Repo'ing tools from customers. I saw that video floating around youtube where the SO guy is trying to get that tweaker to pay him the $1500 he owes.

Have a link? Don't believe I've seen that one.

Unless I'm trying to finance or get approved for credit, I feel asking for my ss number is an invasion of my privacy. I have been to a few brick and motar stores arounf here that asked me for it. I declined and leleft my items walking out

The dealer that we bought out 6 years ago would not fix anything. he told everyone it was their fault.
So I fixed all the ratchets in town, and when we took over his area the guys were happy to see me coming.

I'm curious, how does the warranty work on your end? When you replace a tool on warranty do you turn it in and get credit against your dealer account for the replacement? How long are you holding the bag for the cost? Does the company QC your warranty claims and give you grief over the bent screw drivers, etc.?

Inquiring minds and all that...

...and the infamous " I ll double up next week" If I hear that and you do not double up, I cut you off from buying and tell you I will let you buy double next week."
I do this on occasion. But I have yet to go back on my word.

It works the same way for coworkers sometimes. "Oh, I was gonna buy my own______ but the baby needs_________". The same clown that's been borrowing the same tools from me for a few years now keeps saying "I'm gonna get one of those when the Snap-on guy shows up. :

How many of you mechanics know people that buy stuff off of the trucks and immediately pawn the tools so they can get some cash? Those shiney new tools don't end up in the pawnshop by accident.

The guys I work with are pathetic! Our countertop in the bathroom has razor marks chopped into it (evidently where they chop up pills).
I see them buy new tools and NEVER use them. Of course the tools go out the door the same day they are bought. And I could give a rats *** about how they spend their money, or how they rip off the Snap On rep. But when I get a tool "lost" or stolen or misplaced it's all the same to me... i don't have that tool anymore.
It KILLS me when they ask to burrow a SIMPLE tool like a 13mm wrench.
It's a GARAGE. They are *cough* mechanics.
Mechanics have tools. >well, not these losers.

It's a new year, and time for a new job.

I would do the same at a brick and mortar store, but you are not expecting the counter person to let you walk out of the store with whatever you are buying, with the hopes that they see you again to pay for it.

They are not letting you pay $20.00 a week and YOU have the product.

Its not anywhere near the same.

The reason I ask for it is because the truck accounts are credit accounts, plain and simple. You disappear, I need to be able to find you.

It doesnt work that way at any store front I know of.

Cash and carry, or if Im just warrantying something, not needed. You want truck credit, I want SS #.

You dont want to give me a social, then I will be happy to take your money first, payments even just like a store and when its paid off you can have the product....its called lay away. Just like the brick and mortars.

I have had 1 guy in almost 6 years not give me a social......he ended up being a deadbeat. Everyone else understands its just business, nothing personal.

well if you transfer in from another dealer and they have your social then It will transfer as well. So sometimes all I need is your name and the transfer does the rest for me.
There is no other way to make mike smith an individual customer. I have 5 in my route and 3 robert millers imagine how messed up it would be for mike if every dealer in the usa was looking for him. might make him feel bad.........
