Wanted to get a new tool box to keep in the sprinter camper van we built out. Checked craigslist for aKennedy cantilever box because I already have one and love it.

Found one and bought it for $25 in a dark driveway without inspecting it too much.

Got it home and was initially disappointed because it was actually in pretty rough shape, dents, flaking paint, etc.

Inspected it a little closer in the daylight and realized it was built in January 1964... feeling less bad about its rough shape now.

I actually kinda like the patina it has, and it is functionally fine, but the rust on the bottom will ruin whatever it sits on, and I dont want it to get any worse. It appears to have been repainted twice already so not worried about ruining the "originality" per se.

My intentions at this point are to give it a light media blasting and a coat of paint to keep the rust at bay.

I am also considering lining the interior with adhesive backed felt to keep the rattling to a minimum while on the road.

Im not trying to make it perfect, as its going to be used and dragged all over North America.

A couple questions for the vintage tool guys on here:

Is there a way to tell if this was a military issue box? I see many that look like this one advertised as such.

What would be an appropriate type of paint to use? I will probably try to stick to rattle cans if practical.

Any tips for removing and reinstalling the fold out trays? I don't see a practical way to paint the box without doing this.

Color recommendations? I will likely be using green felt for the bottoms of the trays. Thinking about a cream tan for the shelves and a nice green for the main box. Maybe like the green Sunnen used to use on their equipment?

Thanks for taking a look! I will post updates as i clean it up.

Matt,

Welcome to GJ!

Your Kennedy box is DEFINITELY military, based on the info on the data plate you posted, nice score! Be careful when you work on the box to not damage that data plate.

https://store.midwestmilitary.com/category-s/1965.htm is one (QUALITY) source of reproduction military paint; in your shoes, think I'd go with either the munitions can semigloss or the Vietnam era OD...or red. I don't know Kennedy's line well enough to make a suggestion for red or OD, but if you want to get back to original, just scrape off the newer layers. Another alternative is to paint it krinkle, and then OD over that, if that's what it looks like your original was painted.

Since you're planning to put it in a sprinter van, it's all about making your box practical, so restoring vs resto-mod is up to you :)

Keep us posted as you get the box into use,
Steve

Steve’s suggestions above are excellent. Painting the interior of these boxes is difficult because they are riveted together. I suspect that the inside of your box is the original color. When I found my WW2 Navy box the exterior was very rusty so I ended up painting it with Krylon camo olive drab which was very close to the original color. Fortunately, I was able to leave the interior as found. Since yours has a military history you might want to go with one of the greens. Here is a before and after of my box.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I haven't had a chance to work on it much yet, but Im hoping get it apart tonight so I can bring it to the media blaster tomorrow.

Any recommendations on how to get these rivets off? I was thinking a good sharp drill or countersink?

I will definitely be taking good care of the name plate. Was there originally black text on there? Or was it just embossed?

As far as the felt, i have already purchased McMaster 8770K9 adhesive backed wool/rayon blend as that is what is listed for lining tool box drawers. Should I return it for something else? I am definitely concerned about rust returning. I suppose i could alternatively line it with adhesive backed neoprene or something.

Why might non-wool felt cause rust? Trapping moisture?
