Picked up this neat WW II Air Force transport box. I planned on using it to hold the vintage tools I restore. Authentic WW2 US Airforce Transport Box, Beals & Selkirk Trunk Co., Foot Locker. But it maybe two valuable to hold tools.

Did you pick that up at the estate sale in Benicia this weekend? It looks very familiar.

Dropped by a Sunday only sale and the estate sale for 1/2 off day:

The total here was eight bucks for the monster box, Brass Plumb bob, on the box (used but not abused), battery clips, Key chain wallet, couple of wrenches. The Monster box is my second, and will be used for the entertainment center next time we tear into that. My first was bought new, and is on my main vintage stereo setup.

The Estate sale has just sold one thing I wanted, but the other was this Canedy Otto No. 0 post drill project. I need a piece of 1-1/4" bar stock to connect the table, and its missing the hand crank (besides being frozen up) top crank and maybe moer, so probably aparts drill.

Was doing some digging today in my old neighbor’s garage. Older gentleman I have befriended over the years before I moved. His health has been getting worse, so he is looking to head to a nursing home.

He asked if I could help clean out his garage sometime. The weather has been such **** around here, so with the current nice weather, I decided today was the day.

We have been throwing out old junk and garbage, going through boxes and shelves. Everything had a story or a memory he was willing to share, most of the time.

There were several neat and odd things, which his family, and he, wanted to have handed down. One of the last boxes we opened today had these in it.

IMG_2134.jpg

The picture is after some minimal cleaning. He had bought these years ago because he thought they were beautiful to look at.

IMG_2138.jpg
IMG_2140.jpg

After some talking, he asked if I was interested in having them for helping him. I said i didn’t need anything for helping out a friend. As I was leaving, his son handed them to me, saying his father had always thought of me as a son. His son also thought of me as a “little brother” as well. I couldn’t say no.

Not sure what to do with them and what they are worth yet, but now I can pass on his story to the next generation.

Nice snag, prichman. The box may be WWII (does the OEM marking also have a date stamp?), but just as an FYI, the white and black stenciling is post-war. USAFE was created in August 1945, and Travis AFB was established (re-named that) in 1951.

There isn’t much left of the OEM sticker. Here is a photo of the side with the sticker. I appreciate the info. I saw Philippines listed in the black stenciling.

I'm still without a PC so my posts are few & far betwee - but I'm still working hard on my garage sale-ing!
These two items ended up in my possession after a random stop at a sale.

- Parker 4" swivel vise with broken slide. It's still functional but is really only useful as a parts vise.
- Craftsman BE 1/2" drive speed wrench with amber handles. The amber is rough but serviceable.
I paid $10 for the pair.

Here’s my haul from yesterday. Nothing today.

The first stop was an estate sale that advertised “TOOLS, TOOLS, TOOLS”.
It was mostly JUNK, JUNK, IMPORTED JUNK instead.

I ended up spending $34, but not on their wonderful assortment of tools. :wtf:
Instead, I got :

9-1/2’ x 7-1/2’ oval braided rug (mass produced, not homemade)
121’ 5/8dia manila rope (wound on a plywood board)
K-D Tools #2038 Window Moulding Remover tool (still unopened package)
Screw-Mate 5pc counter sink bits w/ holder

100_2695.jpg

The next stop was back to the sale from friday to see if I could scrounge up any more sockets from that Lisle box I found.
No luck on that front, but I still found a few scraps to take home.

$5
unmarked pr 3” bronze vise jaw covers
Plvmb 1214 7/16” combo
Bonney (Bonaloy) 1162 1/2” combo
2X - Hinsdale 1020 1/4”-5/16” DOE
Bonney (Bonaloy) 2887 1/2”-7/16” DBE
Bonney (Bonaloy) 2886 7/16”-3/8” DBE
Bonney H14 5/16”-11/32” DOE
Bonney 1159 5/16” combo
Topline pick (all steel)
unknown/unmarked tool (i think that I should know this one, but for the life of me can’t remember what it is)

100_2698.jpg

Then on the way home, there were two TOO’s across the street from each other.
spent $3 at one for :

Craftsman stainless steel grass shear

100_2696.jpg

Another look at the unknown tool :headscrat

Yesterday, I went back to the place where I bought the Benchmaster mill, post vise, etc. and grabbed a few more things for $20:

Pulleys, tools, machinist jack, master key blanks, etc.
50lbs brass rod
Round stock, flat stock, etc. to play with on the mill / lathe

This afternoon when I brought my son to a birthday party, I noticed something interesting looking on the side of the road. We were in the wife's car so I know it was out of reach. Ended up leaving the party early to take her mother to the emergency room...luckily it was a false alarm but on the way home I snuck back (was in my truck at that point) to where I'd seen it and luckily, it was still there. A vintage King motor tester / analyzer. It's rough but cool as hell garage art for me or somebody else.

I also picked through another trash pile in my neighborhood on the way home (can't help it) and found a Sears white gas camping stove and Coleman lantern.

Going back to last week, there was an estate sale where I picked up a Craftsman crown top 30" carpenter's tool box and Kobalt USA / Williams wrench lot for $50.

I'm a collector, not a bargain-hunter.....

Lugz, that statement only goes so far with Mrs_P. n fact, her first words to me most of my early bird mornings which she doesn't come with me to are, "Don't buy junk!" My rebuttal is usually, "OK, I love you bye!" (Grab my keys and wallet and tip toe out the door before she fully wakes up and comes up with a honey-do list).

Regarding buying price philosophy, I try to justify my purchases with prices which will not loose money on resale if Mrs_P or I need to or want to get rid of it. Most of the time the "want to" get rid of part is due to re-arranging/organizing.

On to deals. I didn't finish telling you about this Atlas drill-Press picked up on Saturday because I was so busy enjoying the whole weekend with perfect weather.

I hit three sales on Saturday morning at 6AM before the Atlas purchase. I thought I was giving myself plenty of time for compete with the local re-sellers/collectors. My schedule called me to go to two 7AM sales followed by one 8AM sale. I drove out of my driveway at 5:55 and thought to myself, "self, you're doing great by getting up early", but as I took a left turn out of my driveway, I see two cars parked on my street just three houses down. I had to stop as these guys are cool (Jimmy and another). It's two of my acquaintances already shopping as one of my neighbors is still setting up. As we shop we discussed our morning schedule and the sales we all knew about we figured they went northbound while I went southbound. And we'd all end up at the 8AM tool/farm sale.
I was the first to arrive at sale number two. Nothing bought there either. I did take my time until another collector showed up (Danny). He's cool too. Then one the resellers showed up from the northbound sale with nothing significant to report. He followed on to sale number three along with Danny. Danny then tells me about a stop in between where he said, "a guy shows up with some impressive/cool stuff".

Now to the sweet spot which was not on my schedule thanks to Danny. It was at a local indoor flea where I know the owner (Jay). He set up a bring your trailer sale. As I pull up, I greet Jay and tell him how I found out about this stop, Jay says, "my stuff is cooler than his" because I'm not the first to tell him why I was there. I drive around to park and notice Jimmy, Danny, and Amy (also a collector). They're all huddled around a 4x6 utility trailer. I walk up and right away start asking prices.

Me: "How much for the coleman lantern?"
Seller: "$2, it comes with an extra glass"
Me: "Sold!"
In the mean time, Jimmy was standing so close to the covered drill press that it would have bit him had it been a snake.
I see it and ask right away, "How much for the drill press?"
Seller: "$10"
Me: "Sold!!!!!!"

I couldn't believe my luck as both Jimmy and Danny would have bought that thing in a heartbeat.
Here she is in her art home until I decide where she'll spend the next 80 years....

What's the model number? Does it have a collar and what is the condition of the handle?

Thorsen 1/4 set plus a heavy Stanley level. None of the pieces in the socket set say USA and the markings are small.

Got another handful of vintage stuff this weekend...

Pic 1: all for $10, the hand vise was $5 of it. Hand vise is unmarked. Baltimore cat's paw, Craig-Hatch nippers/crimpers, a tractor wrench of some sort, a few clips and a set of 4 pressed-steel early sockets.

Pics 2-4: another $10 for all this. Krauter 8-inch lineman pliers from 1910-1920, Proto nippers, Thorsen 1/4-drive ratchet, a Klein screwdriver, 3 oddball files, 2 ratchet extensions (Proto LA and New Britain), Proto 1/4-inch breaker bar, 5 wrenches (1 early Craftsman DOE, a newer Craftsman double box, a tiny Plvmb, a small Williams heavy DOE and a Duro ignition wrench), and 7 sockets (Craftsman, P&C, Husky, Snap-On, Williams, and New Britain).

Picked this stuff up a couple of weeks ago later in the day of an estate sale. Piece of railroad track, small box containing some taps (most of which were Card and Greenfield), some additional taps (mostly Vermont), two dies, a small but stout cast iron plane, some casters, an old German driver and a Starrett No 6 screw pitch gauge with the original box (top covered with tape). I've already had a couple of occasions to use the pitch gauge. How nice it is to go to the store knowing exactly what size screws/bolts you need! Total paid: $4. I also picked up another nice set of vintage Puremco dominoes with original instructions for $3. Even though I made what I consider a nice haul, it was one of those sales where you know you made the wrong choice that morning by not hitting that sale first! :)

Flea markets vs Estate Sales vs Garage Sales - Which are best overall?

It all depends on what is good for your area. Some areas are good for garages sales. Some are good for Flea Markets, etc. Whatever is predominate in your area. For me it is Pawn Shops, then garage sales & estate sales. But the people here think their stuff is gold so I don't hit the garage sales or estate sales too much. At some of the garages sales they ask more than new prices for the stuff. We don't have any Flea Markets here.

Flea markets vs Estate Sales vs Garage Sales - Which are best overall?

All just depends on where you live...

For me...

Flea Markets - No tools, just overpriced antiques.
Estate Sales - Probably best chance to score quality stuff, prices vary wildly.
Garage Sales - Hit or miss. It's a game of numbers but eventually you will score some good finds...
Pawn Shops - Also hit or miss. Prices again vary wildly...

All just depends on where you live...

Makes sense.

Duct Tape Man: Nice haul. That "heavy" Williams DOE is a tool post wrench for machine shops. Vintage angle or obstruction wrenches are not common and that Duro is a nice one.

Flea markets vs Estate Sales vs Garage Sales - Which are best overall?
As others have said or alluded to, highly dependent on location.

NJ is known for the quality of its flea markets, and it's my preferred hunting grounds. A few years ago I was doing the estate sale circuit, but I found it too rigorous, and more of a circus than a circuit, for me. (Personally, I got tired of having to find the sales in newspapers or a service, mid-week, ahead of time..., doing some intel on each sale, especially if the ad is vague or suspect..., and then lining the addresses up and doing route planning.) On top of that, more miss than hit. And on top of that, the whole time I was in my car or going through a dud garage or basement I was imagining all the good stuff I was missing at my flea markets! :)

Good luck at the junk store today: Managed to find this un-branded mid 1930s S-K 3/8" ratchet for a couple of bucks. This one dates to about 1935 just after Theodore Rueb received the round-head patent. Apparently this piece may have been part of the "Brazil Tools" contract production done by S-K.

The internals of this ratchet were caked in long-dried-out grease, but were otherwise in great condition. After an through cleaning are re-lubrication it's back in business and ready to go another 80 years! I know these early S-K round heads turn up from time to time, but this was the first one I've ever encountered. It's always fun when you recognize the value and significance of something that to the dealer is "just another ratchet".

I've hit up some local yard/garage sales that were mostly a bust (mostly toys, clothes, housewares, etc). Flea markets tend to have better stuff.

Although I've had good luck at flea markets, it seems that in the SF Bay Area the best vintage tool finds are at estate sales. Pricing can be all over the place, although I've found the flea prices to generally be a bit higher. Garage sales around here are mostly drive by, with a few exceptions.

Maybe its just my area, but I find it depends mostly on the day, I can go to any of the three, and strike out, or be rolling in gold.

Found some things at my local flea yesterday..13 bucks for the cast iron, griddle on the bottom isnt that old but will come out nice. Bigger pan is older unmarked Lodge thin casting, and the small one is probably a lost cause, but was thrown in. It would make a decent anode.
Petersen 10" used but no wear, 1/2 air fitting, Proto la 9/16-1/2, Utica nice nipper, a $3 head wrecking disc.
long S-K 1/2 had a random Proto socket -$15 from one of the pro tool dealers.
Blackhawk 5/8 square socket with square knurls, Velchek plier, Lectrolite and Herbrand shorties, a regular air coupler, and a NOS appearing Bonney DOE.

Friday's finds
I only went to 1 sale and for a change it was close to me, only 4 miles.
I saw the pictures and spotted a Baldor buffer wit the extended shafts I really wanted but although I go there early someone else was ahead of me in line and snagged it first.

Pic 1: So I decided to get the Craftsman top and bottom box for $120, they had some tools in them too. I have been wanting that top box configuration tall narrow center drawer. I also grabbed the old military hip roof box that had tools in that is on the right side of the stack.

Pic 2: All the table grabs. The hatchet is a made in Germany Helko Hunter and used to be sold by Harbor Freight, now sells for more than the new price on EBay! My axe and hatchet collector guy wants this one bad! Victor torch, Ridgid small pipe wrench and my favorite stuff, Sears 50 foot tape measure, Craftsman Crown logo buffing compound and Powerbit case full of Craftsman router bits, bit driver with storage in the handle and a Reed Prince screwdriver. Wrenches are a Walden DBE, Proto obstruction wrenches and a Bonney refrigeration wrench. The food in the back is because I always check the pantry for cheap food to give me more garage sale money LOL.

Pic 3: Vaco on top, Xcelite on the bottom. Guy must have repaired TV's at one point.

Pic 4: A bunch of different brands, Armstrong, Blackhawk, Bonney, more Craftsman including a Crown logo router case and the big ball peen hammer, Crescent, Fairmount, Filson, Giller, Husky including that metric set of short sockets and a KBS made in Japan DBE wrench.

Pic 5: P & C, Plomb, Proto including those tiny little offset DBE igniton wrenches, SK, a small pile of Snap On including the ratchet, Vlcheck, Walden, Williams and Wright

Pic 6: A Sylvania TV repair box, I will have to post more pictures later.

Pic 7: A small box everyone else ignored but I spotted the Greenlee hole punches in the bottom.

Spent $180 total which was bit much but I wanted those toolboxes LOL.
