Charles, what a set up you have there, very jealous. Even though I work on vises everyday I do not have a bench vise mounted, instead I use my Record Woodworking vise to hold all my vises and vise projects. I would love to have one like yours. Thanks for sharing.

From the car boot sale, the No1 was £2 and the No0 was £3.

Dutch Wow that is a great deal, nice score

BTW, since you are NOT from Australia, you are NOT allowed to post upside down photos :D. Also I am not sure what is up with the photo when I clicked on it to enlarge and have a better look, I just got a black screen. But even upside down and without being able to see a larger photo, they seem to be in very good shape.

Blame the smart phone for that one, decided to save it upside down, was probably too flat when I took it, I have never had any luck editing them either.
They are in my album on the site if you want a better look.

Hi All
Does anyone have a Yost 204? If so how much does it weigh?

I was checking the stats on this model in the vise spread sheet and it seems the weight is stated as ONLY 23 lb!

To start with the weight for the 3" 203 is stated at 28 lb which is 5 lb more than the stated weight for the 4" 204 . Also for an old American vise even the 28 lb for 3" vise seems to be low and 23 lb for 4" absolutely make no sense. A typical 4" American machinist vise usually weighs more than 50 lb. And I think Yost 204 might weigh around 58 lb.

Any clarification is appreciated.

Toptul make what looks like a well finished vise. 3" up to a massive 10" made of cast steel.
Given the relatively high price I'm guessing they are made in Taiwan not China ?

Figure it out 007 and let me know so I can update the spreadsheet. Guys, please let me know if there is a error in the spec:s so we can be accurate. I am doing the best as I can with the time I have.

Dr Scott It is apparently 57 lb. Please change it in the spread sheet accordingly.
Thx

Ok Fellas......I'm wondering who can school me on some Prentiss history. I've attached a pic of 3 different Prentiss swivel jaw vises. All 3 are for the most part the same looking vise but what primarily sets them apart is the way that Prentiss branded them. Anyone have some good info on date ranges of each style? Thanks. 20180507_215251.jpg

I don't know VA, you seem to be getting awful gun shy. I'm sure $175. isn't even close to the winning bid on that.

454, I've already got one of those little buggers on the swivel base, (it's a little different than that one, swivel-wise,) and too, I'd be like those gamblers on the Wheel-of-Fortune that get greedy and think that the law-of-averages is just a myth.---BANKRUPT!.---Or in my case, YOU BOUGHT THIS ITEM, PAY NOW.:scared:

EDIT---This is not my Stevens vise, just one like it on Pinterest.---The pics of mine are being held hostage right now but I'll try to drag it out and take some pics for posterity.

What I look at shows all
Prentiss on a curve Pat underneath on the Dynamic Jaw #s 1 - 33.
Solid jaw jewelers vises
#s 34 - 39
show Prentiss Vise Co. or Prentiss Pat
on the vise body.
Vise # 50 - 96 adds N Y under Vise Co again on the dynamic

Nowhere do I see the fancy script. 1896 artists renditions?
So that makes me not a heck of alota help with your question.

oops, #s 84 - 89 and a few others don't show with the others

My "new" vise. Picked it up at an antiques store. It works great, but the jaws have seen better days. Anyone know anything about this one? Wanna make sure my $$ wasn't wasted...LOL

Yost sells an almost identicle vise in the USA that’s an Asian import. I think at one point they may have been USA made but not for decades. I presume the Toptul is the same vise with different colored paint. The reviews for the Yost version say made in Taiwan.

ISB, the green one looks to be a Colton Patent vise.

George A. Colton patent holder, No. 320,224. Patented June 16, 1885. H&B, Inmarks, Phoenix and unmarked examples exist. "Mfg by Moore & Barnes Manufacturing Co. of Phoenix, N. Y.": Accoring to patent info? http://www.datamp.org/patents/displayPatent.php?id=7259

X2, weird, I think I picked up the same vise this weekend. 3" Jaws? My largest Colton yet. Anybody know what the mounting parts look like?

Chris, can you get pics bigger than a postage stamp? Also one is from the top...
Sorry bout that. Here are the first 2 pics full size this time and then the 3rd one I'm referring to would be Prentiss vises with no branding on the sides in the casting, only Prentiss N.Y. No. ** on the top of the static behind the swivel jaw (better pic this time).

I'm wondering if I would be in the ballpark to assume the earliest Prentiss would be with just the branding on the top of the static. I'm thinking probably turn of the century on up until they may have changed to the deco style like the first pic. This would make the style in the 2nd pic the most recent prior to merging with Parker.

Im just wondering if anyone has some good info on approx timeframes for each style. Resized_20180507_214727.jpegResized_20180507_214753.jpeg20180508_204336.jpeg

Yesterday I saw this ad for a steel work bench but what caught my eyes was the vise on it with the tell tale stubby nose of a R series Reed. In the ad the seller had stated the asking price for the bench and but also that he would consider selling the vise if someone was interested in making an offer. There was zero info on the vise.

Based on the only photo (photo 1) I guessed it might be a 4" Reed of some kind. I texted the seller asking if the vise was damaged or repaired at all and also asked about size of the vise and offered $50 if it was in good shape. He replied back the vise was in great shape and he would consider my offer. He also said he will send additional photos once he is home.

Later he send me an additional photo (# 2). The upside was that the vise turned out to be a 404 1/2 and in great shape (minus missing taper pin), the downside was that seller texted back that the vise was a lot bigger than he had remembered it (apparently it had belonged to his grandfather) and if I could make a better offer. I replied I would if he sends me a photo of the swivel jaw bottom to make sure it is not damaged. Few minutes later he texted me the 3rd photo. I pointed out that the taper pin was missing and offered $80 and then there was no response for few hours.

I text back again asking if he would consider my offer. He replied back if I could do $90. I figured based on the lack of response for few hours he might be getting other offers and said I will. As it turned out he had 5 other people interested in the vise (none interested in the bench!) and had one offer for $90 but supposedly since I had made the offer first the seller decided to give me an option to match the offer (and honestly when I met the guy he turned out to be real gentleman and a very nice guy, so I believe him)

I had to drive 1.5 hours each way to get the vise but it was worth it, minus the missing taper pin the vise is in great shape.

Now I have to figure out what to do about the missing taper pin. Interestingly bagged had the same quandary a couple weeks back and I am not sure what he did about it.

bagged and anyone else
Any advise or info on the exact dimensions of the pin for 404 1/2 would be greatly appreciated.

Nice vise Gman!

I'm not sure if everyone here does but I for one really enjoy vise acquisition stories. I've got one from the last couple days I'll post up later.

Bunk and Chris

007: without the pin the vise is almost worthless so guessing you overpaid. Seriously you can even trim down a bolt for temp work until you buy or make a permenant one. If one of the guys doesn’t already have a pin drawn up in cad I’ve got one sitting on my 404.5 on a shelf I’ll try to get some specs for you so just ask. Nice find and GOOD EYES!!

007: I had the same problem with a smaller Reed. Not knowing exactly how I was going to make one, I hit on the idea that maybe one of my tapered punches might fit. I realized it was a long shot, but had a bunch of punches so nothing to lose.
It turned out that one of the Craftsman’s fit perfectly, taper wise. All I had to do was cut off the excess on the small end where it hit the slide. On the top I cut the excess off and left it about 3/4 in. long. It was square rather than round, but worked fine, although it did look a little weird to me, it didn’t bother the guy I sold it to one bit.
