Yup, that's the black wax I make. That's the vice where I had to drill those bolts out.

That first photo shows how the piece looks in the light. It had a couple of coats of luminous followed by a coat of linseed oil.

This is how that vice started off.

I've got a lot of custome tools I've altered but I never toss them cause I never know when that situation may come up again.

I have never altered a vise to degrade it's value,,,for any reason.

VA
:+1: I got to use my contraption again recently when I had to remove an even bigger slotted bolt from my newly acquired Reed 404 1/2.

As compared to many here I have a limited assortment of tools but I take good care of the all (regardless of the value). In this particular case I had several sockets of the same size so I modified the most used one and I am keeping this baby for future use.

Ditto on the vises!

The Athol is a 624N. 4" jaws weighing somewhere north of 50lbs (I still need to get a proper scale). I will flip it over later and let you know how big the shoulder bolt is.

All

I'm pretty sure I don't have to worry about ruffling any feathers posting this eBay listing because the buying format is "Buy It Now" not an auction. For anyone who has ever wanted a NOS baby bullet with original box now is your chance if you can stomach the price!

Thank you for sharing. I do not have a baby Wilton and I have never seen one in person specially a NOS. However I am a bit puzzled by the vise though. The anvil area and jaw inserts are painted!. Is that normal for baby Wiltons? Also I have seen photos of baby Wilton with Wilton stickers and there are none on this one, again I am not sure if this is always the case or not. Also the color looks Dark Green. :dunno::headscrat

Gman - you and I are on similar paths of our vise addiction. I too have never seen a baby bullet in person. When I saw this one my first thought was that it was probably a late example before Wilton discontinued making them as earlier examples do seem to be a different color and usually wear at least remnants of the Wilton stickers.

Mine is Jan. 1977 , It is Verde green and the anvil area is painted along with the Powrarm. The vise is cast with Chicago and the base is Schiller Park.

That EBAY NOS baby bullet Wilton Chrisnazzy posted is interesting, No zip code on the box even though it has a full address so it may be pre 1963.

Chris, that BIN sure messed up a good ride.---I wouldn't have been afraid to train surf that one up to 5 maybe 5 & 1/2 before bailing.

I'm kind of partial to those old ones with the square anvil on the back.---Of course you know that the anvil area on any of them is more less for show.

I tried to interchange it with the clamp-on Wilton but the clamp-on part wouldn't allow it.---I thought that would look real nifty but the clamp wouldn't accept it.

Looked at my first CL Wilton bullet vise up close and personal yesterday. I couldn't see a date code on it. Feel like it was about 4" jaws. The vise was in rough shape. Looks like it had seen duty in a welding shop. There was a piece broken off the static jaw on the inside-underside edge/corner. Otherwise, I probably would have taken a chance on it at $50. The bronze jaws definitely needed to be replaced. I also believe it was missing the swivel base. How can you tell when these are missing the swivel base versus never having had one? There was a small hole (smaller than the two side holes) dead center on the bottom. Is that a clue?

Guy wasn't selling this beauty from his gun/knife making shop. Was fun to see it in production though. :)

He also had this ginormous Emmert vise. The jaws swiveled around, as in right and left, like on a clock face. It also looked like the top of the vise and the jaws would swing around, again like on a clock face. It was HUGE. He said it weighed 390 lbs. Said he'd sold another a month or so ago. Sorry I didn't think to take a pic of it.

Looks very similar...except it needs to be covered in rust. That one weigh 390 lbs? It's possible he might have embellished the stats a bit. Guy obviously liked to tell a good story. :)

PS I also didn't notice two sets of jaws on it but it could very well have had them.

tx: It actually has three jaws. Unfortunately, the only photo I have that clearly shows that is a BEFORE picture.

Anybody know anything about a Jet 100% steel vise made in France? Saw it advertised on the Facebook marketplace...for $250. Tag says tested to 20 ton (which I'm assuming equals a 40,000 psi rating, if it's the same kind of rating as ductile iron). Not much came up on a quick Google search but I didn't spend a whole lot of time looking.

Guys, check out my latest shop addition. All the way from Newburyport, MA to Atlanta, GA and it arrived here safely!
I posted it here since I will actually use it to straighten bent vise handles and swivel locks as well. Plus, my main forum participation is mostly in this thread and you guys that hang out here in this thread are also my favorites as well. So, without further adieu, my Dake #4 floor model arbor press has arrived. 12 tons, 1350lbs of great American iron.

That is indeed a magnificent beast! and congrats on the arrival of the new baby

So we now know where to send all bent vise handles to be fixed. As for swivel lock arms I am afraid this monster might just crush them :bounce:

I've actually straightened many teeny tiny swivel locks on a press like this before. The key is setup and having the "feel" that only an arbor (ie not hydraulic) press gives. Although hyd presses work just fine as well.
Truthfully, this press is for much more than vise work, and if all I was doing is straightening vise handles, I'd pribably have gone much smaller in size lol.

Razor: WELL DONE and wishing you lived closer to me cause we had a lot of loggers and longshoremen using pipes and hammers on the vises around here that need more than a little fixing.

CRS: I've always wanted one of those Emmert Wonder vises and now you show me (us) an add where they made them in 230 pound versions. also it's only $22.50 each so I don't mind paying shipping and i'll take 4 please at that price.

thanks for putting another one on my BUCKET VISE LIST!!

Tex: Yep I think taking pictures is a must if you are heading to see the 390 pounder and maybe a few of his other gems.

good luck

Drives,
The guy said he's been collecting since he was ten years old and I'd believe it. He has a LOT of interesting stuff. He did say that up until about two years ago he had anvils and vises out the wazoo. You could spend a day there and feel like you weren't close to seeing everything. I'm not sure how I never caught any of his previous sale ads in CL. My loss. :-\

M: it’s a 1920’s Prentiss swivel jaw. I’d help you more with model # if you posted jaw width or maybe somebody has the lengths of Prentiss vises to know your model #.

Welcome to the forum and nice find.

:+1: On Prentiss and needing model or jaw width

Hi friends, any Help with this old, rusty vise?

Mlutra
Not knowing the jaw width it might in principle be any of the models listed in the photo below (Prentiss with swivel base and swivel jaw). Now based on the only two provided dimensions namely the length of draw bar and length of the static jaw housing, the usable opening might be 5-6". So based just on this fact a shorter list of candidates might be

model 19 1/2 with 4" jaws and opening 5 1/4"
model 20 with 4 1/2 " jaws and opening 6"
model 504 with 4" jaws and opening 5"
Model 505 with 4 1/2" and opening 6"
.

But even though it is hard to tell from the photo it seems the jaws might be none replaceable. If so it might even be a model 47 with 4 1/4" jaws and opening 5 1/4".

Again these are best guesses based on only the length measurement. And as Drives said a model number or jaw width will go a long way to provide a more accurate information.

Regarding the biggest Emmert bench vises...
Here is a pic I found online. I assume it is a 10A
Real monsters to be sure.

Drives:
Twenty two fifty might buy one today but you’ll have to move the decimal point. :)
If the smaller one belonging to CRS turns up missing from his garage, we know where to look.

Shift: WOW thanks for the picture to put an image of my new vise in my head. yep i doubt i'll find it for under $30 and if i do I won't mention the price cause i'll just be SMILING A LOT. I did see the smaller one like CRS has in a members garage on a nice stand that looked amazing. it really was a WONDER VISE and no wonder it's been copied so often.

Acquired this Wilton vise 940 stamped"Acme Tool New York" a few years ago and just wondering if anyone has one or any info on them. Mine has 12-50 on the slide as the manufacture and warranty start date. I haven't seen many of these around, thanks gg54
