Do I need to tape and mud the ceiling?

Shop build. I thought I could mud and tape the ceiling. Well I have some problems with my head ( brain). Turns out that long looking up down etc trying to do so is very very bad for my head. Dang near had an accident, blacked out for just an instance, came too just before I went off the edge of the scaffolding.

I plan on insulating the attic to R49. Used 5/8 sheetrock. The question is can I just leaving the ceiling as is or do I need to tape and mud it.

I'll likely have to hire it done but I can save and do it just before winter if it needs taped before insulation.

If it's a fire rated lid yes it must be taped. If not, it can wait.

I just "fire-tapped" mine. No sanding.

You could probably hire someone to tape it at a reasonable price, especially if the scaffold is set up.

If you are talking about getting dizzy when looking up or to the side, you can fix that condition. It's called vertigo and can be cured by going to an "eye, ear and nose specialist" who will do some manipulation of your head to stop the dizziness. Or, you can do it yourself. Google "Epely Maneuver" and follow the instructions on how to determine which ear is effected and then treat it with the maneuvers accordingly. If you don't have this condition, suggest you see a physician to determine the problem. This is not something you should be content to live with and should be treated. Been there.

I had a blood clot in my jugular vein about 16 years ago. It was blocking 98% of the blood flow out of my brain at the time it was discovered. My body shut off a fair amount of blood flow to my brain as a result. It did some damage in my grey matter.

I live with pain every day. I have gotten lots better over the years but I can still be down for a week or two at a time. And when I say down I mean down. Barely able to move. This particular movement really was not good.

When I black out it is usually from pain. Took me about an hour to make my way into the house from my shop about 50 ft away.

But feeling a bit better now. Unfortunately my ceiling is just gonna have to go untaped for now

Just wanted to say thank you Glenn for the concern with my health. Next doctors I see for my head may well be out of country been to several hospitals in our great nation. Near as they figure I sustained similar damage as someone who had a severe brain trauma injury.

I guess after so many years, you know what you can and cannot do and working on a scaffold sounds like one you should stay away from. Have the ceiling finished by someone else and enjoy working in your garage.......with feet on the floor. Best of luck to you.

I'm a medical something or other lol. My cousin is coming over to help me today. I hate asking him for help but I did offer to pay him and he said no. So getting done.

Biggest problem I have is I pretty much know what I should and shouldn't do. But I tend to want to get **** done. Which leads to days like today. I'm about half speed.

What is that they say. Damn the torpedoes full steam ahead. In my case it's Damn the headaches fullish speed ahead lol! But every day above ground is a good day!

Damn blaz, that *****. I'm far too familiar with attitude verses physical ability. It's almost daily my brain says "you can do dis", and after a minute or two my body says fug-off ******* and shuts down.

I put drywall on the ceiling in half of the basement. No tape or mud, painted eggshell white. It looks just fine for a wood shop. Most people don’t even notice.

Gotta agree with this. I can understand the pride of doing everything yourself, but there's a place to draw the line - and that's certainly your health.

I did all the taping and drywall finishing on 3/4 of my house - room by room over the years. When I found out how inexpensive having a pro do the work was, I never looked back. I'll do small taping projects now, but anything that can't be done in a few hours - I'll hire someone.

Sorry to hear about your medical condition. Probably hiring someone would be best. For fire resistance, yes, taping is required.

I feel pretty much the same way. The people who do this all the time will have the job done in a fraction of the time it would take me to do it. The best part is, the job will look perfect when they do it, if I do it, it won't be as nice. My thinking is, I will do the things I do well and I will hire others to do what I am not so good at. Plus, as you mentioned, it isn't all that expensive to have a professional drywall person do the work.

If there is living space above the garage, yes, tape it. Otherwise it is optional. I hope you feel better soon.

I have a "defective" neck due to crushing and breaking it a few too many times. I get up and get going I figure its a "good" day! Usually pay for it the next day but I too refuse to give up!

My cousin came over today. Got about half of it taped. He is gonna head over Monday to finish the other half and a second coat on the first half, then in Wed to do the second coat on the second half.

Woohoo. I even offered to pay him but he said nope.

Even better, I'm giving him a lift kit for his truck. Building bumpers for it and this winter we are gonna do a bunch of work on his backhoe.

In reality we are friends and family. And as I have told him and he has told me. Family helps family. Not everyone really gets that or cares enough. He is good people
