I have used several things
I have one like you pictured but it is LED and half the price. Bought on eBay.
I also have some of those old school desk lamps that I have had for a long time.
I also use those free blue lights from HF turn on and magnet to the mill to put light where needed

There are some magnetic led sewing machine lights on amazon or ebay that do well. I've put them on saws and probably my shear soon.

I have seen a homebrew "lighted ring" which encircled the quill as to provide light with supposedly no shadows. But not sure how well it did with the quill extended.

I second matt_I's sewing machine light recommendation. That's what I have on my milling machine. I actually have two of them - one on either side of the spindle. They were cheap and provide plenty of light. The ones I have are connected to the magnetic base with about an 8" (+/-?) adjustable gooseneck, so they're really easy to move out of the way or adjust as necessary.

You might also want to check out the Ikea Jansjo light. I think they're around $10-15. I've put these to use on other machines and really like them. It's easy to remove the base so you can attach the light to something else like a magnet or clamp.
