Perhaps your Sears is different, but there are three Sears near me, one mall dept store and 2 'hometown' stores (all are 1/2 hr or more drive, but so is everything else), and they all stopped stocking kits or doing any repairs to ratchets almost 10 years ago. They all simply swap out any returns with a new one no questions asked. I've never even seen a kit available for any of the 75tooth ratchets.

my younger son found a ratchet in a parking lot a year or so ago. craftsman, but had clearly been driven over a bunch, when we went to take it back, this is what we found:

they had a cardboard box under the register for the return, they toss it in. they have a plastic tool box with the "warranty replacements", 1/2" and 1/4" on each side of the tray, and 3/8" in the bottom. if you ask nicely, they will let you paw through them looking for the replacement you want, as opposed to just passing you the first one that they lay their hands on.

i have not been able to find mention of the kits anywhere, it is likely that they dont support that at all anymore. (*sigh*) too bad . . . . . .

My Sears also hands out refurb units, not new ones, from a bin under the register. I was hoping for a new one. The old one gets rebuilt, not thrown out.

That's what my local Sears did 2 yrs ago. No kits available. The only choice was to exchange for a rebuilt one out of the bin under the counter. I was able to find a 1/2" USA flex that matched mine (broken teeth) but no telling where the rebuild parts came from. They have a sticker that says "rebuilt"...same ones you see at flea markets with rebuilt stickers.

Better hurry if you want to exchange anything. I heard on the news yesterday that Sears is posting another list of store closings...they reported 72 more stores.

And they want someone to buy Kenmore .... they're circling the drain.

i would, but that one doesnt fit the ratchet i have. i was not able to find one.

it is a 49203 3/8" 75 tooth quick release ratchet. the 84 tooth is nice, but the handle is slightly bigger.

Yeah I was just trying to show that eBay had them, and didn’t even know which ratchet you had. I saw the p/n in your post after I posted this so I went back and searched but didn’t see anything

I wonder how we will like retail life when all these big stores disappear. The day will come when it will be very hard to find a retail shop for tools. Friggin internets!

They will be available from home improvement stores and auto parts stores; and then you'll have your local contractor supply and industrial supply stores which most people have never heard of.

I found rebuild kits for my Craftsman 1/2" ratchets (one was a torque wrench) and my 1/4" ratchet on ebay. The prices were good so I picked up spares.

Is moving onto a different type ratchet entirely out of the question?

like a lot of us, i have a fair collection of ratchets. i find that particular ratchet is the right combination of handle, size, and teeth for general use.

certainly changing to something else, or just buying another, is a reasonable option, but it bugs me that an otherwise fine tool is sidelined because of some small part failing.

i fear that sears stopped making kits for ratchets at some point, and this one was introduced after that time. i was hoping that i was wrong, and someone would point me to a kit, but it looks like i was right.

So many products with that problem of being sidelined by a part failing. It's a terrible waste.

I don't think Sears actually made any of their products or repair parts. Sears is (was?) a retailer.

Curious more than anything. Probably a stupid idea but .... If you can figure out the manufacturer of the ratchet, contact them about a repair kit???

Personally I wouldn't spend any time on this, as there are so many other options available. I'm not a CM ratchet hater. I have bunches of CM ratchets that I pick up at estate sales for next to nothing. Just bought two 3/8" drive ratchets this weekend.

I called Sears today about a rebuild kit, gave the kid the PN of the ratchet and the PN of the rebuild kit. He still needs to know the drive size. Puts me on hold for three minutes, comes back says he has one, sell it to me for a penny. Great - is that for the USA ratchet? Oh no, it's for the Chinese one. I gave him the exact PN, he still couldn't nail it.

On my way back from Denver this morning, I stopped at that same Sears. Showed the kid in the tool department my ratchet, voila, hands me the repair kit, no charge. The nice part, is that the selector in the rebuild kit is metal, whereas the original is plastic.

If you can find out which tool manufacturer made the ratchet you might be able to find a replacement kit under a different brand name. I was trying to find a kit for an old Husky ratchet and Blackhawk works on some of those.

Probably not his fault. There are many instances where Craftsman carried the same part number across many generations of tools, especially ratchets, of different designs and manufacturers and countries of origin where the kits between them are not compatible with one another. That's where the manufacturer code is just as important as the #9******, and Sears nowadays is likely only going to have kits for a current generation if they have any at all (mine has none, period, for like 10 years now).

Ex:
Here's a USA made Craftsman 3/8" 44815:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/273093739842

Here's a chinese-made 44815:

Here's a USA made 44807

Here's a China-made 44807

The USA and China kits are not compatible with one another.

Yes, but I gave the kid the PN of the repair kit as well.

The 44815 is the ratchet that I rebuilt - it's worth $54? Jeez, maybe I should put it up on ebay.
