I had a very productive day in the shop, with "my nose to the STERLING grind stone." The assembly is going really well. I should be ready for the first test grind tomorrow. The components are very heavy and totally avoiding damage is not easy. There will be some touch-ups.
The machine is a precision tool, but the electric wiring is a mess. I have a plan to sort the wiring out and leave it tidy. I am adding a https://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/sum-g3902c/overview/ to cover the bare OEM toggle.
The picture is of the latest and greatest from Sterling.

Doing a shop 'reboot'. 25 years- one gets 'settled' and stuff you don't have any true need for is so familiar you no longer 'see' it. Starting up working on an old car project resto-mod again and need to be as functional as possible. Simplify, get stuff off the floor, and get productive. I started my car in '93, didn't do much after '00. Try as I might, I'm not getting any younger.

Bought a new Husky toolbox. I haven't heard much about these yet, and are probably brand new to Home Depot. They're 24" deep. This the 36" wide and is replacing my old 52" workbench (the workbench top became a storage area, and ultimately useless) and I get to reclaim some floor space.

I had previously been looking at the Masterforce boxes, but I don't have a Menards anywhere close, and would've been double the price of this box ($600) after shipping.

There's some questionable design choices for drawers, for both placement and size/depth. But just something I'll get used to.

Wife and I collect rusty things at flea markets for projects.
Made this plant holder.
I know, my safety gear is a little lacking.

25 years of nearly nothing, 18 of nothing at all? IMHO, if your "project" means so little that you let it rot away, maybe time to sell it to someone who will finish it.

Air compressor was running happily along, no problems. Media blasting some brackets... then...

BANG! Clatter clatter clatter BANG! clatter SPRANG!

Then nothing as the compressor locked up and the electric motor tripped off.

I didn't want to disassemble the compressor, but what else are you going to do?

Found one piston rod had broke up completely, shattered. Both journal surfaces on both rod ends showed spalling on the contact points, but the crankshaft was not damaged. No bearings on these as they use splash oiling. Thankfully the cylinders are good, as are the pistons. But the rod obviously is shot, and due to the bearing area being compromised on the other rod, I will need two rods.

This Lowes sold Kobalt air compressor uses a Campbell Hausfeld air pump, and I was able to find parts online fairly cheap. Looks like about $100 maybe max to replace the parts and gaskets. The rod/piston is a 'kit' but the site doesn't say if that is for one or two. Just the Rod/Piston kit for the compressor. Bah.

And yes, the oil was full. No fine metal really in the oil when I checked it during tear down, so I'm going to believe poor materials or QC. Don't know fully yet.

I recently moved a smallish ~800# welding table using two HF "1000# Dollies", they ended up looking like this:

Hella-Dolly-12_resize_resize.jpg

The "heavier duty" blue ones from HF aren't much better.

So I got some 2' square x 3/8" 6061, some BF casters and hardware and made my own "Hella Dollies". It'll take a lot to snap these in half.

The 'channels' on the bottom are to keep straps from slipping or interfering with the casters.

Thanks, they were fun to build.
First serious use will be maneuvering 24' glue lams around for my shop build.

Trouble shooting and working on the Mustang, not only am I having shifting issues, it appears the engine was balanced to 50 rather than 28 oz. After the TKO comes out today, it'll be another road trip up to Summit for a balancer counterweight and a new SFI flywheel.

I'm glad I took yesterday off work and as I laid under the car swapping balancers, thought to myself, I'm enjoying this.

since my boss pissed me off this morning, i decided to take a mental health day today.....

been playing with this idea for a month or so, i'm a competitive shooter, (USPSA and steel plate) and hauling a loaded range bag around is getting old, and is wreaking havoc with my back.
after seeing the "shortcomings" and insane prices for shooting carts, i started scrounging around the house and came up with an idea...

made a plywood base out of scrap plywood, cut down a granny grocery cart, welded it back together this morning, and gave it a quickie paint job....

I didn't do anything in the garage today except pull my car out and drove to Wildwood Crest NJ for some much needed R&R :) Not coming back until next week.

My STERLING drill-bit grinder is nearly finished. Because it weighs in at 380# is need to build something onto the base so I can roll this unit around the shop. I want to use the machine transport design that works well on other heavy stuff.
There are a few paint scuffs that need some TLC and then I can calibrate and start to destroy drill-bits. Installing a pin into a bell-crank and clevis was fo difficult. After an hours of frustration, I drilled a 9/16" hole in the casting for easier access to the clevis/bell crank and connecting pin.

I've seen them color matched in the textured finish... they look fine.

I'd go back with the white if it wasn't color matched.

I have an '88 k5. The A/c has it's work cut out for it under normal circumstances... I'd hate to have 75% of the cab in black to add to the load.

The stock GM AC leaves a lot to be desired in the old C10's and K5's compared to more modern vehicles but when I am finished with mine I am going to put the lizard skin heat blocking material down on the floors and roof of the fiberglass top, as well as sound treatment for the floors, doors, etc etc... Also doing an LS swap so at the same time I am going to install a Vintage Air system, which most all reports come back saying it is a really good system for day to day use.

I'd go with white but in this case I am going with Silver on the body color and then black on all the accessories, meaning bumpers, mirrors, key locks, door handles, and whatever else I can paint, plasti-dip or powder coat black, so white isn't quite going to match that color scheme, lol.

That was my concern with mine. I added a piece of 3/4" plywood or OSB in the center to help spread the weight on all of mine.

I think at a certain point I'd just recycle the wheels and make some 2 x 4 framing for them and have a stronger setup.

I've done this and also used some 5/4 board (tread stock, I believe it is, or maybe decking) and this works well, too. I didn't bother w/the carpet replacement.

The problem for me is that the wheels failed (the post snapped off of the top) causing the frames to break, not the other way around. In one instance my top-heavy surface grinder damn near toppled over when one of the wheels hit a tiny rock and snapped (one of the blue HF dollies) off while moving it across the garage floor. I'm done with small or cheap casters, just not worth the risk to my gear or my back (trying to keep my gear from falling over when the wheels break off). YMMV.

I just bought enough caster wheels from HF the other weekend to make myself a proper surf board for my spare K5 top and now that you say that I am sitting here wondering if I am going to regret it. On the up-side I did buy the ones that come with the rubberized caster and metal body so hopefully i won't have quite the same problem.

Mom mentioned the Model A in a celebration of life today, so that led to some hurried $H!T shuffling in the shop to get it out and gussied up to show the folks at the reception afterwards (was planning on cleaning it after that, oh well, shiny again, now to recover it it bug guts and rain drops :D ).

Yesterday built a battery charging station and painted it. Today I assembled it with all the chargers, rounded up all the batteries and put it on top the toolbox. Finally I can have all my batteries and chargers together!
