Which is more important: color or profile? Removing more material to make it smooth will make the shape worse, but it will remain solid red. On the other hand, you could leave it rough and fill the gouges with epoxy, then file or sand that down to the original contour. The color won’t match, but I think it would feel better in the hand.

This brings up a good point, like I posted about in my DP tread. What material are these handles made of? (ABS, Bakelite, Resin?)

If we knew exactly, we might be able to repair them.

I think I'd try tiny files and then small pieces of progressively-finer sandpaper, personally.

file and/or sanding block, unless you have a belt sander. if you finish with 1500-2000 grit, the new profile will look as good as factory, or funny and misshapen, depending how it goes.

Thanks guys. It’s very jagged so I’ll see what files work and go from there.

LS- once smoothed it should be like a nice finger hold, but if I had the material I might try that. The blade is in great shape, too bad it got roughed up.

Dremel, file, 80, 100, 200 sandpaper, etc. If you kept at it the last step would be a buffing wheel for a full polish.

Any date code on that Snap On? It looks really old.

The $10 box. Lots of cheap wrenches but some American odds and ends. A few keepers in there. The Kent Moore was worth it.

Hexen- I didn’t know that came in Craftsman.

I think the Bike pedal wrench is going in my box.

No idea what the piece with the S on the end is.

Went to a mid-week sale ,mid day today both unique factors as I usually don't get to hunt until weekends.

Picked up a(nother) Stanley tape measure,3 Proto screwdrivers,an excelite 5/16" nut driver, a banding cutter, the battery tender, eagle oil can,Herbrand Flex-box 9/16-1/2" and a powr-kraft adjustable(?) nutdriver. First time I've seen one of those. Will look up the number shortly and see what Google says ,but I'll bet the collective here on GJ will know more.

I didn't find the original reference, but here's a bit about it from the Aug 1967 Popular Science magazine, referring to an unspecified previous issue:
https://books.google.com/books?id=CyoDAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA125&lpg=PA125#v=onepage

"Some weeks ago we reported in these pages that Montgomery Ward was adding an unusual nut driver to its Powr-Kraft line. This tool has a nest of concentric hex sockets. Spring-loaded, the inner sockets retract to let the tool fit any of four sizes of hex nuts. A very useful tool."

I've got one of those Powr Kraft universal nut drivers. I also have the Klein "clutch clamp" universal. I prefer the Klein overall (you can grip a screw, then position and spin it in) however the PK is smaller so fits in a tighter spot. The Klein is also size agnostic. (Metric?)

Today's haul.....
20180606_155951.jpg

Got two rolls of 3M blue painter's tape (1 wide 1 narrow) for a buck.....you can never have enough blue painter's tape :)

Gave a quarter for the #82 B.K.Sweeney Mfg Co tool cause I thought it was unusual and neither myself or the seller knew how it was used......After a bit of google research, I found out that they are pliers for Adel line clamps used in aviation.
(Not that I'd ever need them but.....)
20180606_160508.jpg
They're personally inscribed on the handles with "USN NARRD" and "K55 and either BO19 or 13019"
20180606_160545.jpg

Next is a Lutz 2in1 "flip" screwdriver....A Stanley No.31 3" pocket level.....A Hart Design Inc brass triangle
20180606_160709.jpg

Also got a tool box lock with key....all for two bucks
20180606_160737.jpg

total so far = $3.25

Last purchase of the day is a Multi-colored Snap-on KRA-59J (made in Canada with a 1988 date code) for $20....
20180606_135251.jpg 20180606_135415.jpg

All the slides and drawers work (missing one clip and in need of cleaning).....I mainly bought it for the emblem and was either going to use it for parts or flip it on Craigslist cheaply (minus the badge) but my oldest son came by the house this afternoon, so I gave it to him.....He said he'd give it to his wife for a junk box......works for me.....It keeps me from maybe doing something stupid like trying to restore it.....

JML, while they still make Adel clamps by the 1000s, the pliers are no longer made, you'll have no problem getting rid of them. That is if they're intact, they do have some flimsy springy parts.

I picked up something similar in a small box of tools at the flea awhile back
Mine is made by VACO, and has a 12 tooth ratcheting section behind it, but the automatic nut driver section appears identical in construction and finish.

Lots of great finds lately guys!

Pawn shop 5 dolla holla to report. Craftsman, p&c, Bonney, Snap On.

The Snappy was caked in a hardened black gunk, so I know that slipped past them. The pry bar looks like ol’ rufus took a bite.

Any suggestions to smooth that gouge in the handle?. It’s extremely rough. I was thinking dremel type bits or heat.

With the similar markings, the previous owner probably etched their name in it and did a bad dremel job to remove it, otherwise went overkill removing permanent marker.

heat it just enough to conform to your hand :dunno:

I like it, JML! I can see several scenarios for that thing.

Does it look and work like the Stanley Hex-a-Matic shown in the Popular Mechanics article Hexen linked?

I bought a new Tig/Stick welder a couple of months ago and finally got around to building a cart for it today. Why am I posting here? Well the basis of the cart is a small file cabinet from ReStore. $15 is more than I usually would pay but this one is heavy and has a configuration I wanted. The cart is not finished yet but here's what I got so far. 20180607_141008.jpg20180607_140929.jpg20180607_140949.jpg

Roadkill!!
I just couldn't pass it up even though I was pretty certain it would be mangled
beyond repair. Heck, even with today's prices it's worth a buck for scrap. Imagine my surprise when I found it to be in generally poor condition, but functional! The drawers move nicely, the lid opens and closes easily, and the one real problem, the crunched caster, will be an easy fix with hammer & dolly. I don't think it will even need any welding.

There's a spot in my garage that's just open storage, and this will fit right in, letting me better organize one little spot.

Garage Sale content: I was thinking about garage sales to go to tomorrow when I spied it. The question is how much I would have paid for it at a garage sale -- $10? $5?? ummm NO.

I walked to an estate sale right around the corner from home and found a few DeWalt pliers, a decent Craftsman screwdriver and a Union square with a really rusty ruler but the awl in place. Hopefully I’ll do better at the Tahoe flea on Saturday.

Slipped out this morning and got following:

Frick Gallagher of Wellston Ohio Rotabin. Diameter of each of the 8 circular bins is 34" and pole/stand approximated 6 ft high (pics 1 & 2)

At same sale were two toy items. Charles Doepke Model Toys of Rossmoyne Ohio a 1950 era American LaFrance Pumper Fire Truck (pic 3 & 4)

POLL MFG. CO. MIDGET EXCAVATOR, 1949 or later.

$5?? ummm NO.

I've picked up several "road kills" like that; one was missing a caster, another was just grody looking, etc... Two were bolted together and are under my big RAS, One was my welding bench until recently (I sold it as I replaced it), Another became a band saw stand. They live again!

Cool. Somebody posted that same wrench on the Gazette a few months ago. Jafe said it was for shocks, hence the strange setup I guess.. The nut splitter is neat.

I’ve not run into any tools in that brand. It was kinda up in the air on who the wrench maker was but here is the thread:

I posted mine there. I wonder if thats the only size they made... it is strange, different size ended combo.
