Hit flea markets, restores, antique shops, garage sales and estate sales in two states over three days, picking up the following:
20180610_172932.jpg
Vintage Plomb, Snap-on, Wright and Armstrong sockets, a rode-hard-and-put-away-wet Proto rat, MT1 bits, Hazet, Craftsman and Plomb wrenches, a vintage but full bottle of Hoppe's, Utica nippers and USA glass scrapper. Also a Simpson 372 ohmmeter, Westinghouse AC voltmeter, and LBT industrial oven tester. Along with a little organizer and some solder. I love half price day!
20180610_172941.jpg
A Stanley 29 transitional plane (needs a bit of love, but transitionals are good for wooden boats, which I am thinking hard about building.)
20180610_172955.jpg
And I had been looking for a nice vintage radio for the shop, and this one at least lights up. So for $14 I have a nice project.

Ragtop, $1/ea on those Blue Point DBEs? Yep, you ****!

BMW, that radio is sweet, let us know what all it takes on the project pile! Are you planning to keep the original speaker(s), or retro-mod it?

This thread just keeps getting better and better.

BMW, I presume the radio is tube? if so (or even if not, as old as it is) the Electrolytic capacitors will need replaced (anything with the Polarity marked).

Match value as close as you can, (many had lopsided tolerances like +20 -40%), so anything in that range and modern caps will be available with tighter tolerances making it easier. As long as the voltage is the same or larger, you are also OK. just make sure the polarity is matched as you replace!

Bad wiring and solder joints are also easy, and that is usually 95% of any issues with old radios/stereos...

One other thing to watch for is a capacitor that leaked (again the electrolytic caps), and if that etched a circuit trace away, you can bridge the gap with wire. it won't take a big wire...

Thanks Outlaw! I have been lurking on the vintage radio forums for a while now and they match what you say. It is an 8 tube radio and while I haven't got around to checking the tubes yet, I do have a working tube check machine that I picked up at an estate sale last year. So I have that going for me, which is nice.

Cruising Offer Up late last night and saw "bench grinder with stand". Messaged to see if it was still available, and the guy replied back at 4am that it was. Four hours and 9 miles later, I'm loading a 3/4 HP flat top block grinder into my truck. The stand might not be original, but it's sturdy and the eye shields are perfect. Runs like a dream. Also came with light, quench tray and CM tool sharpener attachment. This thing is covered in sawdust, but looks like it will clean up nicely. Oh yeah - $50.

Thanks Rags. I was pretty stoked to get it. The date stamp on the plate underneath is too faded to read, but I'm guessing mid 70's? Do you or anyone know if you can tell the date from the serial number?

Got a call from a buddy that there's a garage sale a few miles outside of town not advertised but just a roadside sign. He said they had a few hand tools. I get there and find this.... also pictured is one of craftsman prototype roll around toolboxes that never made it to production... : )

oh, of course, I bought some stuff here, I haven't even got out of my pickup yet... pics coming tomorrow.
That is impressive. I may have fallen over on that one.

timbitca, you ****!!

Thanks. I also got a 2$ rake with the stuff (because I needed one, didn't especially "want" one :p ) so that also brings the $/item down technically.

Timbitca, that Xcelite ratchet set is actually a Chapman, must have rebranded it for them.

You know I had actually thought about that when I picked it up but forgot to investigate it when I got it home.

FB Marketplace shopping today and came upon a 1 day tool sale while out fetching drywall for a bath remodel. Picked up a few Cman wrenches and this "set" of Snap On angle wrenches .Two of the larger pieces are Mac &1 Cornwell but 16 of 19 are Snappy. I believe these should resell well.

013.jpg

Also picked up this Timmins&Sons hammer.I guessed lead wheel weights but Google and GJ say leather/cobbler tool.
Pic from Google since I forgot to snap one:

Thanks EC. Nothing special - old farm truck. 77 F100 302, 3 on the tree. The guy I bought it from dragged it out of a barn and immediately hot wrenched the springs - yay. I got it running, replaced all the brakes, a lot of electrical, some steering and now get to redo the suspension. Here it is the day I brought it home.

Man such good finds guys! I've been taking care of a sick dog these past couple weeks so I haven't been able to hit any sales... Heck, I've hardly even left the house... :(

Dog is doing much better though in case you were wondering. ;)

This hatchet was a garage sale purchase a few years ago. The **** of the haft was mashed up, so I filled the voids with epoxy and gave it a couple coats of shellac I had tinted to match Craftsman hammer handles. And sharpened it. It’s been hanging on pegboard hooks since then, but my youngest is graduating high school, and Mrs LesserSon and I are HEADED WEST in a couple of weeks. So I am getting stuff together that might be of use. For transport, I thought a sheath would protect the other gear, and maybe a hand reaching around for something in the dark. The leather is probably as old as the hatchet; I bought it from a buddy in the early 1980s. (He got it at a flea market.) The rivets were in a bucket of junk I got at another garage sale. I think the awl is a Dunlap or Craftsman (garage sale), and I used a Bonney 3/4” cold chisel (garage sale) to spread and flatten the rivets. Oh yeah, the pattern for the sheath was in a Wilderness Survival manual I got at...a garage sale.

I'm not sure how else to date them, prob post it in the Blockgrinder thread. Those guys are really good at it! The one I found was a 1HP with the original book, quench tray and the sharpening attachment.

Outlaw, the book suggested riveting a small buckle, but I figured I could add one later if I felt the need. I just left a long tag on the flap, and it’s just wrapped around until I decide how best to secure it. Maybe a slit and a toggle. I don’t intend to carry it on a belt - just to keep the edge from marring other things in a box or crate.
We are intending to car camp our way across the country. Not staying in one place for long. Dome tent when it’s dry, floor of the minivan when it’s wet.
I expect it to split some kindling along the way, but if the zombie apocalypse breaks out, it’ll be there. Handy for making spears, palisade enclosures, etc.

LS, how soon are you leaving? best thing I can add to a car camping experience is a better way to keep clean and deal with dishes.

Look for my "shower tank" (washing tank) in my camp gear thread. (see my sig) Pretty easy to make one from a Hudson sprayer; self contained pressure pump and you can make it as big or small as you want. (1 gallon? 3-4?...) I just introduced a couple of people to it on the last camping trip and they were all over it, once they found how easy it was to do the dishes, not to mention the simple task of washing your hands...

Picked this up from Craigslist the other day.......Seller and I met in a shopping mall parking lot halfway between each others locations.

Nice guy....He had it advertised for $40 but we settled at $30......

Works great.....Now I can add it to my growing interchangeable tools I already have.....

Love everything about this post. Thanks for sharing!!

I recently purchased a new Craftsman hatchet on sale for camping with my 9 year old son. That was after I read him "Hatchet" the book by Gary Paulsen. I was looking for a stacked leather handled Estwing but couldn't justify the expense...
