I have a forced hot air, oil fired, down draft furnace. recently there seems to be a moaning noise when it is operating. Where to start looking for the problem??
If you only hear the noise when the blower is turning, then i would suspect the bearings/bushings are going out.I can definitely hear the noise when the blower is turning after the burner has shut down. Not sure yet if it is going when the burner is lit. Possibly bearings or bushing in the squirrel cage?

Some motors are not meant to be repaired, that is to say they are spot welded together. I suppose it is still possible to get them apart and repair them, but then you need to spot weld them back together again. I doubt it would be worthwhile. If that is the case, I would just get a new motor instead of screwing around with it. Hopefully yours is the type that can be taken apart and repaired.
I despise this whole disposable society and components that are not repairable for just this reason. When I get back into town from work I guess it will be the next project. Or better yet I can wait until it is cold out and dismantle the heating source just to give my wife something to nag at me about.
