Hi all,

We recently bought a new home (Cape Cod Massachusetts) that needs a new garage door. The old one is over 40 years old and seriously deteriorated.

It is a 16x8 door and the frame is in good shape. I have received 2 quotes for HAAS 600 garage door for about $2100 installed. I tried to negotiate, but neither installer was willing to budge. A third installer (I think it was overhead door) didn't even seem interested in my business after I politely told him the carriage style look was more than I was willing to pay (around $3500).

I called a local HAAS distributor, but they only sell to pros

I was considering doing it myself and was close to buying the Amarr Classica 3000 from Sam's club with windows (beautiful door with lifetime warranty on springs and all) which was about $2300, but now when I looked again it has increased in price to $2900!
Amarr Classica 3000

I don't mind the HAAS door, but it seems overpriced for what it is (I thought the Classica 3000 was overpriced, but for only a couple hundred more and some labor on my part, it seemed a much better looking door with large windows and better hardware)

Anyone have any advice on how to proceed from here?

I have two 12x10 and two 9x7 Haas doors. They are of excellent quality and I would definitely buy them again. Years ago I worked for the Overhead Door Company and I've installed and serviced many different brands of doors.

I guess I'm not sure what the question is. Do it yourself or pay someone to do it. If you are comfortable with your ability to properly measure all the clearances, not just the size, and are willing to invest your time in labor to get the door, inspect it for damage and content, remove the old door then drive it to somewhere for disposal, and have little recourse if it doesn't work properly, then your choice is clear. Go for it. I used to do it for a living. It looks easy but can get tough if it doesn't go well. Been there done that.

Sorry, thanks for the feedback.

Basically I'm a little lost as to how to proceed. Are the price quotes I received reasonable? Can I do better at different time of year? If I go the self install route, where can I buy a good quality garage door?

I've read in some previous posts to buy the garage door locally if I go the self install route. Does anyone know of a dealer that will sell direct to home owner in eastern Mass?

I bought a metal roof from a mfger in tenn , delivered to my house in northern maine.
Im confident i could buy a garage door anywhere and have it delivered here.
Door panels are a lot smaller than roof panels. Ignore naysayers, some people could burn a salad, that doesnt mean we should only eat in restaurants.

Here in Florida we have a very strict building code. If you are by the coast, it's considered a HVHZ (high-velocity hurricane zone) and your door needs to be capable of withstanding a three-second 180 mph gust, and to resist penetration from a 2 x 4 fired by a pneumatic cannon to mimic wind-borne debris striking your house or building.

I got the HVHZ-rated Clopay insulated doors with Liftmaster 8500 jackshaft lifts and have been very happy with their performance. I got two singles because I figured that would be stronger than one double, and also because I can conceal the side I don't need opened, which I couldn't if I had a double-wide opening single door.

The Clopay was a good choice for me, no issues whatsoever with the doors. They are cool to the touch inside, though they do-not face south, which if they did, would be the real test of their insulation.

There are a few people on here who install doors professionally, see what they have to say. I let the pros install mine, it was a 1-day affair, and I've been secure and happy ever-since.

This is who I used when I got mine done.

They were only a couple hundred more than it was going to cost to do it myself and I got a better door.

Not sure if they have other branches but I was very happy with the work and quality. I came home and the door was up. That's it. A friend of mine used them more recently and had the same experience.

These folks put an 18 x 8 in my home garage/shop in 2000, 18 years and still going strong.. they are out of Sandwich MA.... for the price difference I just had them install it, no mess, no fuss... door in and working great for 18 years and counting.

I agree with the above post. Ron installed my 12x12 insulated custom door 20 years ago and it is still perfect. Go with a pro !

My father and sister framed out the whole front of a 2 car car port in one day. One got a standard garage door and other they made a door, it was to low for a normal door.

My father never worked in the building trade but is good at building things and my sister works at a desk all day. If they can do it im sure your capable.

Garage doors are actualy prety forgiving..way more for giving than a man/entrance door.
