Where Have You Found a 4.5mm Fastener..?

Hey Chaps,

Just wondered if anyone has actually found a 4.5mm Fastener anywhere. I see a few
Socket sets that include them, Interestingly most high end sets I have seen don't.
I'll allow 11/64th for anyone with odd machinery

I'm often bemused by the 5.5mm Fastener used in quite a few cars. Never seen one
that couldn't have used a 5 or 6mm head instead... But the 4.5mm is very elusive.

Be interested to to know where they are... Cheers.

I see it gets used all the time for the purpose of filling out the peg in a Hansen socket tray.



Actually the 4.5mm is used for 80s-90s Ford headlight alignment, TFI modules, hi-lo plastic screws, etc. I seem to recall using it on some hose clamps also.

Edit: Ford TFI modules were 5.5mm. My bad.

Never found one. I think this was asked recently and the consensus was on mobile electronics if I remember correctly.

Back in the day crown Vic's had 4 mm headlight adjustment studs and ignition modules were secured by 7/32 bolts but, I haven't used 4.5 mm ever.
Now, 5.5 mm is very common on AC actuators and many other under dash items.

Always interesting to hear examples of uncommon fastener sizes actually being found. When it is hex sizes this question typically stems from the filling of Hansen trays. My question would be how many sizes on the trays are extremely uncommon and what is the total cost even at $20+ tool truck prices of filling those few spots?

I think most people on this board have a minimum of $10k in tools and many have quite a bit more with a few even breaking over $100k. In percentage terms then how silly is it not to just fill the pegs? If the question is from a broke student/apprentice then the advice is buy the tools you need and worry about complete sets later. If the question is from someone with 400 sockets but no 4.5 then I say just complete the damn set and quit worrying about it.

What size fastener normally comes with a 4.5 mm head or uses 4.5mm nuts? As fasteners are usually speced by thread size I would have to find an DIN or JIS chart to answer the question. It seems that it might be 3mm. Dunno

When I replaced the headlights on a 2011-ish Farmall 80 tractor, the end of the mounting/adjustment stems were 4.5mm hex. It was nice to have a socket to hold the stems still while I removed and then screwed back on the plastic nuts.

When i was working as a speedometer tech we came across them all the time. They're used mostly on the back of dashboards. And on big rig trucks from the Americans to foreign. From 60s to the 90s don't know about know i left that filed a long time ago.

Late 80s R/C cars, Bosch Dishwasher, inside a Porsche gauge cluster, a toaster, and inside a VCR. Hadn't used one in about 10 years when I needed one to open up a toaster someone dropped an expensive ring in. Then I needed one to install a cover plate under a friends dishwasher.

Iirc I was Doing something with the distributor on a fox mustang. I forget the name of the actual part. I’ve used it a few other times as well but don’t remember on what but remember having to grab the other socket for that size.
