Reed 324 1/2. 2 questions, what exactly was a pattern makers vise used for? And what are some tips and tricks to getting this pin for the swivel jaw unstuck? This was a $50 Facebook find

Pattern makers vises were use to make the wood patterns for sand casting molds. hence the extra long slide (not needed for sheet metal...) sharp angle jaws like filers vises, and he smooth jaws.

work at the pin slowly. GOOD penetrating oil, side taps (Taps, not whacks!) occasionally while its soaking. If patience wears thin, disassemble and several have posted jack assemblies made from a couple of bolts and a long coupler nut.

In addition to uses mentioned above, Aren’t these vises also sometimes referred to as coach maker vises? Is the latter name in reference to leather work as well wood work etc?

Tonight's find, a never been used Bessey model 150, it has six inch wide jaws and appears to be cast steel or ductile iron. Anyone have any background on it? It's really well made.

Hitthewall, I think KMScott has what you are looking for in the Vise Info Thread.---He has posted an Athol Coachmakers Vise that looks a lot like your Reed, swivel jaw and all.---The 2 links at the bottom are the ones that KMS posted.

And a google link to several Coachmakers Vises.---The Charles Parker shouldn't be there I don't think.

I would say coach maker as in wooden coaches (carriages) Similar need as a pattern maker.

Been after one of these Atlas xy tables for several years now, at an afordable price. Finally! And even lucked out with the jaws. has a bit of rust but looks unused.

Be Careful with the handles. I have two of these and they both have one broken handle. Wish someone would make some of the longer handles out of better metal and sell them at a reasonable price. The longer one seems to be the one that breaks most often...

It was made by Record, and it’s not one of the cast steel models, so it’s grey cast iron.

A couple of weeks ago while running some errands, my wife and I stopped by this local consignment/ thrift type store. They had some tools out front and I went to look at a trivise to see how the prices were. As I approached I saw a pattern makers vise sitting underneath the trivise. No price tag. I looked it over pretty well and asked the store clerk what they wanted. $40.

But I didn't have to match/paint anything. This was all the original paint that was under the rust. CLR is some pretty dang good stuff. Really brought it back.

Hello again, was wondering if you thought the CLR would safely clean this 1946 marked 2" Baby Bullet on ebay just a little. It is a little dirty on top of the original paint. Would not want to ruin the paint.

I agree with va.
If it was mine I would probably disassemble, give it a bath with soapy water and brush gently with an old paint brush to remove dust and dirt and surface crud. Don’t soak off the remnants of the label.
Blow dry with an air hose, grease the main thread, and apply a thin coat of BLO to the painted surfaces. Put it on display in a warm dry place.
But I wouldn’t pay half of that list price.

New here, Just bought a pre 1950's YOST 208. It has 8-1/2" Jaws and is a beast! Paid $500. It is missing (I assume it had one) the swivel base portion. Seems as though there is a plethora of collectors on here and was wandering if anyone had one for sale. I'm not against mounting it directly to table, but would be nice to have.

Don't know a whole lot about the vise either if someone has any background on em. It is missing the retainer collar and I called and ordered one from YOST.

It will mate up nicely with my 8" Leg vise. Although I'm running out of room.

Nice! I picked up the 6" version a while back but it doesn't have the sticker anymore. Little more chunky looking than a Wilton. Pretty cool in my book.

You might not pay that much, but it had already received a couple of offers quite a bit above that so I guess not everyone feels that way. Seller did listen to your opinion and lowered the opening bid, $50 below what one recently sold on ebay for, in worse condition without the earliest date code. Interesting that these baby bullets without the swivel base (missing?), and missing the rear cap, seem to attract a lot of bidding/interest on ebay. I do not know about you, but I would sure hate to have to try to find one of those swivel bases or caps by itself for one of these, seems like a lot of them do not have the swivel base piece?

As far as the 208s go, they have gone through some changes over the years.---The numbering has stayed basically the same but the size and weight has evolved.---Here are some pics showing the difference from early to present day.---I think the weight was lowered because Yost raised their Tinsile Strength to 65,000 PSI. because of Ductile Iron instead of cast.---Probably took their lead from Columbian.---Check out the link above the pics.


My 208 weighs 291 lbs. but only has 8'' jaws.---So there is another oddity.---Even the new 180 lbs. ones have 8'' jaws.

Incidentally, I have never used a York vise although I have 5 of them.---I always wondered how the lateral laying grips on the jaws faired compared to jaws with crosshatches.---Always wondered if they would grip as good.---Wished someone would chime in on that.---Although I know that the mechanic where we take our vehicles used one for 25 years and treated it unmercifully till it finally gave up the ghost.---They are built like a tank.

Shift is not the only one that would not pay that much, many of the long time members here who have been collecting vises (for both use as well as collections) long before the vise menia took over and when buyers that pay that kind of prices were in their vise diapers so to speak, would not pay that much either.

Now that is not to say that the eBay prices do not represent the current market value of vises but rather many members simply have different standards.

BTW, Shift has a vast collection of great vises and I blieve he might have several very nice baby Wiltons as well. And am pretty sure he did not pay anywhere near such prices for them!

Va I have a very early Wilton bullet vises with lateral grips but except for some basic testing I have not used it for any serious work. I believe at least theoretically when the work piece is under downward force , the grips might be as good if not superior to diamond/crosshatch pattern but when under lateral force the grips might not be as effective.

I inquired about a small vise on CL yesterday that was listed for $30. It looked like a 2.5-3" jaw Prentiss, and for $30 I thought it was worth a call. The guy didn't know what brand it was, and said he would call me in the morning. Well.....no call but he did update his ad on CL. It turned out to be a Monarch 217, and after seeing what they go for on eBay he added a 0 behind the $30, and wants $300. What a douche.

Anywho, this Reed isn't close to me, but close to family. What do you think is going on with it? Slide cut, or longer replacement screw? Any idea what model it is? Seller only posted a few pics of the WRONG SIDE OF THE VISE
