RedVise: Very nice find on the "Big Daddy Rat Fink" button! (My first avatar here on GJ was an Ed Roth drawing of a soldier with a classic snaggled-toothed grin sitting in a souped up tricked out jeep.)

Sometimes it pays to look through old tins, even when they don't look automotive, and most times it doesn't. Today was a 'it pays' day. These Schrader valve cores are prized among WWII military vehicle guys looking for authentic spare parts kit items. The cardboard box includes the install tool.

I Picked up this old Firestone tire with the original Firestone script glass insert.

You could find these on most early service garage counter tops or mechanics desks. While not exactly a tool per say, they were used as ashtrays or for holding small items like paper clips, pins, loose coins, etc.

I've collected a few of these with different tire brand logos, tread designs and tire sizes, even colored inserts.

I have one of those tire ashtrays. My maternal grandfather had one which was part of the reason I wanted one. Grampa didn't even smoke! I can't recall anyone on my Moms side that smoked. My dad did, and most if not all of his family. My brother did and so did my sister, but not me other than for about 6 months I smoked tipped cigars on Friday or Sat, nights while we were out playing pin ball and shooting pool (too young for the bars..) I stopped as soon as I discovered I began craving a smoke at other times.

I have a few of my dad's clear glass trays I have used as coasters for decades, and as candle holders before that for 3" candles..

GPW 42 and Private Lugnutz, thanks for the advice on the Cattaraugus 225Q. I bought it because it was cool but I have no intentions of keeping it. Make a few bucks off of it hopefully.

Which actually brings up another story. At the garage sale I put it on top of my small pile, informed the lady running the sale that was my pile and kept on shopping. Another guy came along and saw it and grabbed it. I am not blaming him, unlike some of the professionally run sales there was no clearly defined hold area for people's stuff. The lady had walked off helping someone else. He asked her for a price and she told him to put it back on my pile LOL.

So then he comes over to me and tries to buy it. He offers me $30 but I hadn't had any time to research it and I passed. He then offers me a WWII bayonet but I don't know anything about those either so I still pass.

After looking at a few sold listings on Ebay the $30 was actually a decent offer. I will probably ask $40 for it and see what happens.

Any recommendations for getting rid of the rust?

Went to an auction yesterday. House and contents were being sold because owner is now in a nursing home. Along with numerous other items I bought a Kennedy 520 machinist tool storage. Paid $16. Not knowing anything about these Kennedy boxes I did some Internet research. All the boxes I saw there had a crinkled brown finish. Mine is gray like many of my craftsman boxes. Any ideas on this color Kennedy box?

Probably repainted somewhere along the way. Try pulling a drawer out and off the slides, and see if the inside is brown.

Anything inside it come with? If you got the front door cover, that is probably worth what you paid by itself.

All of the contents had been removed. Not repainted, same color throughout.

John, Pics always help, As the 520 has been made for near 100 years now, and there were changes over the years. But a Q: Are the insides of the box and drawers also grey? Or lined with grey felt?

EDIT Slow posting! Now I see pics. the Small knobs are out of character for Kennedy, they usually have rectangular plastic pulls. Possibly for this more limited run of hammertone boxes. I'd guess 50's or so? :dunno:

Two other items, Xcelite nut driver set and hex nut driver set. I think I paid $1 for each.

I think the attached pics will answer the question about "official wear." There's a lot of room for opinion on these (where between your breastbone and armpit should the weapon be?); I never saw anyone be too strict about how it was done. The main purpose was to keep the weapon where it wouldn't interfere with evacuating an armored vehicle, then secure and accounted for; as always, comfort was Uncle Sam's last consideration.

GPW described the use well. Originally for use by armor/mech crews but then others of us who got tired of having it get filled with water, mud, etc when in an open quarter ton that got your pistol filthy in a few minutes. I never could adjust it to use as a true shoulder holster, more just over left side of chest. Saw it used by all ranks from 70s until early 2000s.

You will note the first picture is with a 45. I still have the holster I carried a 45 in back from the mid 70s on. When the M-7 9mm came into use we had to stretch the leather some to get the pistol to fit right.

Only trouble is GPW's pictures show clean guys. Took a quick look but could not come up with one of us covered in mud with that holster.

I have a top and bottom matching Kennedy setup in that color that I nearly stole from a gov. auction, and I just saw its twin in an airplane hangar in CA. I don’t think it’s rare to find them

Are you sure it is a Kennedy? We have established others like Waterloo made them with the same dimensions and layout, so may explain the different color.

Edit: See the picture, with the tag. Not sure then.

If you're going to flip it, something minimally invasive, whatever you prefer. I wouldn't touch it with a wheel or anything abrasive. Your buyer would probably rather see rust stains than scratch marks.

Agreed. I have a similar knife made by CASE that the blade needs an Evaporust bath...

Ryan, so you you basically got a super deal on the Wilton vise, and everything else was free! Yeah, you ****.

THIS.

The most I'd attempt is electrolysis, but you'd have to keep the leather grip above the water. As Outlaw suggested, Evaporust is probably your best bet. Nothing that can be done to remove the pitting in the blade.

And yes, Ryan340 does ****! One of these days, I'll run down a Wilton in a price that I think is reasonable...

Saw a Craigslist ad that was listed a week ago for two vintage craftsman presses and they were still available so the seller was taking offers.

9b07643911a18647d7151a420d2289b4.jpg

It was about 45 mins away. While there he invited me to look around to see if there was anything else I wanted.

Found a 3/4 HP Dayton grinder with lighted eye shields which he asked $50 for.

Plus he wanted $25 for a craftsman drill press vise.

8f2021ed3d0103dd307b0c05d559754a.jpg

And the best part - when I arrived I noticed it had a feature I’ve wanted - slo speed attachment!

a65ee326a52ad20fb1f10b7bc8ac64ea.jpg

Not bad for $200 total!

Picked up 8 items from the $1 table:

P1090446.jpg

Stihl 032 Powerhead and 2 HP motor were $5/ea:

P1090429.jpg

P1090432.jpg

My favorite find was this minty vintage Pioneer turntable for $20. I actually went to the car and was about to drive away and then decided I better go back and snag it. It was pretty dusty but cleaned up like new.

ALL: big surprise I found another vise. yep, but this one is a KEEPER cause it's a Craftsman 5191 and it's going in my woodshop cause it's been in the past owner's woodshop since 1957.

also picked up a few odds and ends with the vise. a 1/2 inch Long C drill, a box of clamps, some copper nails and I have a hard time not grabbing clean old lumber just because if it's priced reasonably.

I also was trying to sell a 3 door old navy locker and since it didn't sell right away and I found another one and a spot for both I bought the other one. I'm not sure if i'll get organized buying stuff and bringing it home, but I need some fun once in a while.

hope you all had a great weekend.

If the box is branded, I'd like to see it.

Here is some better pics of just the box, it appears to have originally had a red wrinkle finish and the Bonney logo was painted on the underside of the lid at the top left corner. It is starting to flake off, but can still be seen. The clasp appears to have been added by the previous owner.

Started going through the shop I have access to for free stuff. So far, I’ve built a pile. More pics when I get it home and organized. 5bab4742f469877126aad90972345257.jpg8031ad2636049cb5fee99f71bce49f1d.jpgdb0eeedb2445288198ab915fc0b14514.jpg13dd4ad21bec2ee0f4c9100d2d3bfb56.jpg083f302a14de5580202ffa394805bc54.jpg

I did not see a maker on the vise (stamped made in USA), I don’t know much about the RAS recall but I’ll run the number tomorrow,

Beyond that there are craftsman, crescent, Stanley and disston hand saws, a lot of old chrome black and decker power tools (Sabre saw, circular saw, jig saw) a few assorted hand tools including thorsen, p&c, and challenger, some ‘organizers’ (what are those things called? The blue things with the bins), and a bunch of assorted small stuff.
