Royce sir that is an absolute piece of amazingly beautiful artwork. Totally blown away. What talent. Makes me feel bashful to even pick up a file now. Now I’m looking forward to seeing the swivel base for it. I’m thinking to be efficient you might just use a roll back 😉

I haven’t seen one of those. But it sure looks like a great item to display. I love it.

Guys, you have no idea how much fun this project was. Everyone at one time should work with a craftsman/vision artist and a excellent fabricator like Royce. It was like eating desert every day making chips. Thanks Royce for having me.

Right back at you Kevin.
The only way this could have been better is if we could have worked side by side.

Love the black/gold! Very nice [emoji482]

Thanks the gold is gold looking to me once painted but it is called copper and is standard model acrylic paint. The black is hammered black rattle can stuff. First time high lighting letters like this used a cheap model car bush and it was probably too thick but I didn't care that much since this will be a working vise. Babco vises are kinda nice for what they are. I am making new jaws out of a file and then sewing leather around sheet metal with rare earth magnets in it for wood type projects.

Negen, are you going to take some of the temper out of the file or use it as it is?---They would have excellent gripping ability, as a file is designed to bites into metal, but I was wondering if it wouldn't be a little too brittle for any kind of impact work?:dunno:---Or will the file actually be touching anything.---I can't quite picture what you are designing.---That is a new approach.---Keep us apprised of your progress.

It is a good idea, but I think you are right, they are quite brittle and I think they could be apt to fracturing. But maybe being mounted on the shelf works provide enough backing/support?

That's cool! It looks like some kind of bench mounted leg vise? I've not seen one of those before, if that's what it is?

Well the process I am going to use is probably not as scientific as it should be as I have not a good way to test the temps . idea I had was to heat up with a mapp gas torch till glowing then put in a pot filled with sand being cooked with a small butane stove till the gas runs out let cool to the touch should soften it up enough I might do this once or twice.

Don't think it was ever mounted or used, still has a little paper over the jaws.

Ragtop-That clamp on is a very nice looking little vise. From the photos looks to be quite old, which usually makes them more desirable for me. Cool find! Josh

I found this little vice on the slab where our old farm shop burned down back in ‘99. Looks a little better now. I wish I would’ve taken a before picture of it.

The vises of my dad - while visiting this week - went out to see what we have had in our vise life for many many years. Do not recall anything bigger ever - and Dad has repaired everything from kid wagons to farm equipment on these small vises in addition to making (among other things) a spiral staircase to the second floor.

All well used, appear to have been generally abused as well. Took a lickin' and still tickin' for the most part.

If anyone or the spreadsheet needs more info - let me know.

Columbia 43 - had since I can remember - Dad says it came from my Mothers Father's workbench at some point in the 1960's.

Littlestown 25 - from about 25 years ago - probably broken when he got it at an auction.

CB&F Co No. 40 - likely bought in last ten years for his work in the equipment shed and never installed likely because it was more broken than he thought.
