I am only stumbling upon replies to my posts on accident. Is there some setting I need to click so I am alerted when someone replies to a post or reply of mine?

Sent from my iPhone using The Garage Journal mobile app

You need to subscribe to the thread (I don't think this place has "post" subscription)

there is a setting so any thread you post in you get subscribed to in your user settings.

My wife decided she wanted a vise of her very own to put in our shop. We picked this Wilton cadet up a couple weeks ago at an estate sale for $50. She picked out the color and here it is before and after.

Ryan Looks very good  and what is even better is that your wife wanted the vise which is not the case for most of us .

But at the rate you are posting (average of 1.8 posts per year) it will take you 45.6 years to make it to a senior member :lol_hitti

Don't pay any attention to the Gman, Ryan.---If you are 40 or under, there's a good chance you might make it.---People are living longer these days.:D

Nice job on the Cadet by the way.

I had no idea there was anything like this site until I found it last year while looking up vise information. You fellows do some impressive research and work.

That's a nice find Jeff! You don't see many forged bench vises!

Any idea what time frame it was made? I suspect this is another "pre Wilton" design!

Very nice find and swell research there. I certainly would enjoy if you would post up breakdown pictures as you restore it. I’ve seen several of that model but none restored or with pictures of the main components.

Nice snag on the Dropfo vise. I remember I had spotted one on CL and asked about it here, someone shared that print ad. I was surprised to find out they were made about 15 min from where I live, in Canal Fulton, OH. I can't imagine there are many running around, I'd like to take a forged vise on a test drive to see how it stacks up against cast.

That Dropfo is very cool looking. I'm from Canal Fulton (Northwest class of 1986) and never heard of Fulton Drop Forge Co but now I'm trying to find out more about them.

Pretty anticlimactic after Royce's monster, but got some new chompers from Kevin for the Prentiss 98. Very custom, check out the jaw support mismatch Kevin had to design around, it's more apparent in the 2d photo which is the original jaws welded up and surface ground, also by Kevin.

I picked up a very used Wilton with 2.5" wide jaws and a 03-68 date on the key. It had hack saw gouges that created a taper to the sides of the jaws. Saw marks on top of the jaws, and gouges on the slide. The body of the vise is in remarkably good condition. The tops of the swivel locks look as though they were used for a cut off anvil, many chisel marks. I ground most of the gouges flat on the jaws, I cleaned it up and painted it. Now serves as a small handy vise mounted on my roll away box. I have several larger vises mounted elsewhere for bigger needs. The pictures show up in the preview, I hope they will when I post it.

TJ The new inserts look great and as usual Kevin did a bang up job. I am curious though, do you think the jaw support offset was always there (I mean from factory) or someone at some point messed around with them?

Picked up an interesting Clamp on. Its a Stanley Knock off from Germany. (I suspect this is Pre-war).

Here is is, partly wire wheeled, so you get the before and after in one shot:

attachment.php

I picked it up fully expecting ot to be a Stanley, but whee I took the rust off all I found was this 5: :headscrat

attachment.php

Then as I was taking the pics I noticed this and had an AhHA! moment. still no clue about the mfg, but the COO is clear.

attachment.php

I'm considering making a base and making it a bench mount, Ala Dr. Scott (if not so eloquently! )

This is a very interesting and intriguing find. While Asian countries have been and still are shameless in copying anything , I would have expected Germans to have more dignity.

So what is the plan for the base? Do you have access to lathe, mill etc ?

Own both + etc...

Clausing 8520 vertical mill (small)
Atlas Craftsman 12X36 Lathe
Someday I'll assemble the Atlas H mill (even smaller) with a Treadmill Motor
2 other 6" craftsman lathes I need to resurrect 18" and I think 24" beds.
I think I'm up to 7 DP's...

My latest upgrade to my Reed 1C. I snagged up a Reed 204-1/2 the other day because I prefer the round nose handle. As luck would have it, it fits the Reed 1C so that’s where it’s staying. 2nd pic is the 204-1/2 with the original 1C handle in it. It appears the only difference is, the 1C screw is shorter. Otherwise direct replacement. What do you guys think?

JON They are your vises and obviously you can do whatever tickles your fancy but since you asked, here is my two cents. These are both nice vises and in good shape. I would hate to “hybridize” two perfectly good and historically intact and accurate vises this way.

Again you asked that is my opinion! Incidentally, Personally I very much like the look of the latter Reeds with the flat noses as they are different from all the other vises where the older ones have the round meatball and newer ones have the cylindrical nose.

I think it depends on the retention system. The newer ones had the "split ring" screwed in. I think the older had an internal collar?

I’m pretty sure they made these 1C’s with the round noses too so I think it’s still historically accurate.

Yeah it seems like everyone prefers the flat nose to the meatballs. So if anyone hates he round noses, send them my way! Haha.

Yeah I have an older 204 with the internal collar too. I Still prefer the split ring to any other vise design. It’s amazing.

If you have a Rotary Table Outlaw then the swivel base for your German Clamp-on should be a piece of cake for you. Look forward to seeing your finished vise. Sounds like you have many unfinished projects, I know how that is.

Here is a few pic:s of the 5" Hex Bronze Meatball I made for Royce's vise. Had to make a special holding block that fit in the same area the Spindle end was machined to fit. Royce had a vision and I sure had a ball trying to match his wishes. It is like working for an artist. Just had a ball with this project.

No Rotary table unfortunately. Not from lack of trying, but mainly from being to cheap to spend The $$ on one small enough for my mill.

Thanks cretedog, I post my setups hoping that someone would try by themselves building vise parts. Maybe it gives a person an idea with their project. This one I had to think about for a bit before I made a game plan. Royce actually made it easier when he wanted flat facets since I do not have a lathe. If I had to make this a round meatball then I would have stepped off the sides with a large slitting blade maybe using .025 steps and polished the steps till they disappeared. Same way I build knobs and shucks the same way I built airplane nose pieces when working for N.C.A.R in Boulder.

Thanks Beardedone, I can be honest here, I have a group of Toolmaker friends that kind of chuckle that I am finishing my working days building vise parts. These Mold makers, Die Makers and Toolmakers all have built some fine stuff next to me in Toolrooms. The skill of my peers were watched by me and working with them has taught me what I know. I sure appreciate all of your posts mentioning my skills. It does mean a lot to me.

Thanks Honza.

Kevin, do you have a 4th axis on your Haas?

zkling, No this Haas TM-1 is a simple VMC with a 10 tool toolchanger, I purchased it new since I wore out my last knee model building jaws and had to lower the Haas 9" to fit in my basement. This meatball was a simple program to program once I figured out how to rotate it 60 degrees, locate it in a accurate position and have long enough cutters to cut it.
