Delta Dye Not Penetrating

Hey All,

I tried to put a coat of delta dye down and it doesn't appear to have took.

I went out the day after rolling it and its like all the liquid was absorbed into the concrete and left the color pigment on top as dust. I can quite literally drag a finger through it and take it back to bare concrete.

I applied it with an 18" roller and the floor was prepped with a 30 grit diamond grinder. It absorbs plenty of water.

Am I missing something?

Clint, it is possible to remove some residual stain. It is better sprayed, not rolled.

You may have put down an excessive amount using the roller.

Lightly spray on. If deeper color is desired another sprayed treatment is ok.

Scotty, I didn't have a chance to call today. I should have some free time tomorrow.

I also had issues with my phone so I couldn't get the pictures off. I managed to pull a few off today and attached them to this post. You can see where I wiped my finger across it in a few places. I'm fairly certain if I took a mop and a bucket of water I could remove 95% of the color.

The floor was prepped for epoxy and most of it is covered. I left this spot epoxy free and planned delta dye for it, however it got the same floor prep the epoxy did and I know it will hold. You can't scrape up a square inch of my epoxy without a diamond grinder.

Mike I let it pool in some areas intentionally as that is the look I was going for. That's as far as I went after noticing this.

Call me tomorrow.
I will be in the office after 10:00AM EST.

In the mean time, I mentioned the rolling was not a great way to apply.
This product should be applied at 200 sq ft per gal on the HIGH end. When you add more than that you can have pigment build on the surface. This is what you have now.

You need to wipe it all off. Dampen the surface with water, SPRAY a thin application on the surface using a sprayer as recommended. You can lightly spray on a few times but do not allow it to build up too much or your sealer will be in jeopardy of failure.

Give me a ring once you have completed this, I think the result will be favorable once you make these adjustments.

I'll give it a try Scotty. I'm a bit disappointed in hearing this as I followed the instructions and your telling me I just wasted half a gallon of dye...

From the instructions:

Application: DeltaDye™ can be
sprayed, squirted, mopped, painted or rolled. Care must be taken to avoid or cover up straight lines associated with
rolling.

Clint, the rolling combined with the super porous floor (grinding) is the likely issue. Make sure you dampen first. This will slow the absorption of the water in the stain.

I think your floor sucked the water out too fast leaving the stain behind.

I will spot you a gallon if you need it let me know what color.

Thanks

Clint,
I have a super porous floor also and this is what I found out/did.

I put on two gallons of silver as a first coat, you couldn't even tell I put it on. Next I put on 4 gallons of Red Oak. I first started to just spray it on and it pooled really bad so on the advise of another delta Dye user I moped it. DON"T DO THIS. It looked horrible. I just kept spraying it on and using a roller to back roll it.

Not sure what color you are using but I ended up using 4 of my 5 gallons of red on a 28x32 floor. Looking back I used too much as it is a lot darker than I wanted it. I used the HD6525MMA sealer and per Scotty it "wakes" up the color and it does. That is why I wouldn't worry about losing a gallon from the clean up. I would start to be concerned about your sealer, again my floor is super porous and the sealer I used does not flow to fill holes and to be honest it looks horrible. I know I did it to my self but I would make sure to take to Scotty about your sealer and what to use to get the affect you are looking for.

Good Luck,
Mike

Thanks Scotty. I will try this over the weekend and see how it goes.

Hey Mike,

I'm using black and silver. I put the silver down as a base coat, was going to mop on some black and then do some highlights with the silver and go over it with sealer.

Unfortunately I don't have a lot. I bought two gallons (one of each color) for about 150 sq ft.. The rest of my 30x40 is epoxy. I'm not too worried about any holes, this will be a dirty area which is why it didn't get epoxied. I'm more worried about time now. Spending way too much time on this floor...

You can stretch what you have by adding MinWax....

Check this out: For extremely porous surfaces 1/2 to 1 pint of Min-Wax water based polycrylic can be added per gallon of DeltaDyeTM to decrease the absorption and give you desired color without using as much product.

Is that something you can get at HD or Lowes? I've never used it before but I would like to stretch this out so I can finish it up this weekend and be done!

Hey Mike,

Haven't been around this forum for a while.

Its done finally. It didn't turn out how I wanted but overall I made it work and my guests have been impressed. Most of them don't have OCD like I do but, what are you going to do.

I'm moving on to framing, insulation and just rented an excavator a few hours ago to get the power updated. Once things slow down a bit I'll do a full write up with some photos.

What did you end up doing after you had the issue?

I just sprayed two bays of my 40x60 and have the same issue, all the black pigment is just laying on the surface. You can't walk on it without leaving foot prints and if you try to wipe it it just makes a mess.

My floor was poured about 6 months ago and had no problem absorbing water. I am afraid to do anything else at this point.

Jared, contact me directly Monday so we can talk about how you prepared it and how much you applied to the surface. Thanks.
