Matco vs cornwell prybars compared

So I own both the cornwell and Matco prybar sets and mainly picked up the Matco set as for me they felt more comfortable in the hand. I was under the impression they were both made by Mayhew so wasn’t worried about quality. However comparing the 2 I’m wondering if they are actually the same oem. The Matco is a much smaller diameter especially on the 17”. The tip is a 28 degree bend while the cornwell is a 45. Tip is also much wider on the cornwell. Finish on the Matco is smoother and they stamp USA while the cornwell doesn’t. Not a direct comparison but all my Mayhew dominator stuff says USA on the packaging but nowhere on the actual tool, and much like the cornwell the finish is a little rough. Are the Matco ones truly Mayhew or possibly another provider such as Wilde?

I guess they would have to be Mayhew since they share the same patent for the striking cap

Cornwell makes their own bars. Matco are mayhew, but the handle is imported so that is why they don't say USA. I own one cornwell 30" bar and it is very stout. I'd own more if I didn't keep running across used snap on sets diet cheap every time I thought about more prybars.

I have those and any time I need some muscle the snapon ones come out. Those Matco bars bend a lot, but I like them

Is the consensus that the Snap-on are stronger than the Mayhew and worth buying? (Wamsutta is disqualified from answering this question) ;-)

I’m not sure if I believe cornwell makes their own bars as their larger 60” is just a dominator grip that’s blue instead of the Mayhew red

NO.

I have done things with a Mayhew Dominator bar that my snap on pry bar handle broke. The 3 foot wilde made Craftsman/Tekton/lang branded bar with the striking cap is an excellent performer too.

What you have to look at is the bar stock thickness by length. the 3 foot hard handled snap on bar is a great pry bar but, i don't think it's the best in class when cost is factored in but, that's just me.

That is the one bar they don't make, all others are in house. Must not see a reason to tool up to make a 60".

Mayhew makes excellent prybars. I had to design and construct a test fixture at work. It has a 10" shaft running through it to run some rotordynamics testing, and they had no problem positioning heavy equipment. I've hammered away on one of them with a 5lb hammer and they held up great. That being said, I would like to get a SO set for home just to compare the two.

I would say yes, on the 12 and 17 inch sizes Snap-on's bar is larger. A lot of applications require 2 prybars, I have to use a size longer Mac to match the strength of the Snap-on. But Mac's 24" is larger than the equivalent Snap-on

Snap-on's HD prybars with the 2 hand large grip are really strong bars. The tip seems be stronger than the Mayhew's. Have a Snap-on 30 x 3/4 bar and a Mayhew 44 x 7/8 bar along with a set of Snap-on hard handles and a Mac set with the new style grips
