Well. Spent a large chunk of today over at Craigs place 85 miles from home.

Helping him move about some stuff, I do some nuts and bolts on is new 1949 Chevy Suburban.

Looking for a complete, working passenger window mechanism and internals if anyone has some of those laying about out back. Please.

The first thing is to get size into perspective.

As we were discussing it, Craig suggested this was the S-Max of ots day.
It certainly dwarfs my Focus.

Random pics as uploaded.

My favourite line.

Delivered in the street and parked in the hedge, first job was to move it and then using Craigs wife to drive the Ford Ranger, we slowly let it down their reasonably sloped driveway.

Happy man.

Once we had the Suburban parked up it was time for inventory and closer inspection.

Remember, Craig bought the car without trans and motor as he has a load of good parts already stashed away.

We found some numbers inside the hood and front firewall.

Any ideas?

Airforce?

Navy?

After changing the front wheel to a new one, and removing the hideous modern rear view mirrors the manpower was tested

Also ng with the other jobs today, a new rear axle, hubs and suspension parts were fetched.

Packed away in the rear of the beneficiary.

Clam Shell rear end is not common.

Job done.

Lorraine fed us some very **** European deli food after we had wrapped up on the jobs that needed doing.

After lunch and a beer, I noticed where Elli, Craigs daughter had been playing and had to complete the pic.

Yes I enjoyd it.

Saw it, had to complete it.

And Craig gave me another air rifle skip find.

It needs a seal on the barrel.

BSA Meteor in .22 calibre with scope. And a box.

After this I headed home down an M25 that was a bit congested.

Got home late afternoon and went to my garage to play with my truck for a bit.

A great day out.

Quite the artist Rian.

Great score on the rifle..

Air gun isn’t acool, even just as decoration

I unfortunately see stuff in side of other stuff, so had to go add my opinion. :)

Cool suburban! What year is it?

I hear you are coming to Oklahoma to visit me...

Suburban is a 1949 model, missing internals of passenger door.

You need to let me know where in Oklahoma you are, via PM or on here, then between Craig and myself we need to see if we make it as far as you are....... and depending on time of day, distance etc, whether you have a mattress and shower for us in your shop. We will as always is the case when I travel, do silly distances for no real reason (well, to meet great people of course  )

Stas, as mentioned above it’s a 1949 Chevy with minimal history, other than chassis numbers used for export and titles.

So getting started once we were on the drive, I exploited one of Craig’s greatest weaknesses.......

Order, uniformity, and all things OCD.

One of the four wheels was an original rim and tyre with locked on nuts.

So I pointed out to him it really did not look very good.

So we fetched the no 4 wheel of 5 he bought with new tyres (well, 100 miles used) and he fitted it after much work with “spookpis” (Duck oil) on the nuts and a breaker bar.

Once done he had a relieved look on his face, so I pointed out the modern side mirrors rusted onto the doors, one had been broken off in transit.

Panic turned to calm when he brought out the grinder.

How many moderns can you walk over and get to tight spots like this....?

Mirror no 2 being addressed.

One of my favourite repairs to the rear clamshell door.

Shows the value to which this had dropped at some point in its life.

Back to size perspective.

Ford Focus.

And last pic.

As found yesterday morning.

Where it was delivered. Looking down on Lil the 47 Aerosedan.

This will be all from me about Craig’s new favourite baby

Unless we are fitting a motor at some point soon.

Back to earlier this week.

Some random, some car and truck related.

Hope you get a grin out of some of it.

New belts off eBay arrived for Powerfile and as a spoiler, I can say that they work well, no self destruction, so the old belts must have been just that, old and glue dead due to age or heat.
These can handle all the abuse I throw at them.

Result !!

Also got some more of these to go with my air powered grinder.

Again, works a charm.

Wyzz being his usual self...... jealous or all over me, no idea, but he is a cool dog.

Dennis has been using this truck to do a house movemfor his mother in law, ElCamino or GMC...?

Regardless, I love it and he keeps tempting me.

While walking Wyzz on Wednesday, I saw this and chatted to the owner, he did some engineering for me 14 years ago.

Morris Minor, converted to convertible but with Peugeot 205 mechanicals, including front wheel drive under the skin.

And another random sighting when traveling from Guys Hospital to St Thomas Hospital this week.

Modern, but clearly being used.

Made me smile.

Later.

Thanks for checking in.

Glad to see the new belts worked Rian.

I wanna say that is the GMC version Caballero just based off of the hood ornament. But it is hard to tell. If it is the GMC version they are a lot more rare.

That old school bike is more than likely being used by a hipster/millennial.

Belts are awesome and time savers.

Cheap too at under 50 cents each.

I only used the 40 grit and one of the 120 grit rotary mini flap wheels to complete the dash work and what a pleasure.

Caballero is a one owner truck.

Dennis reserves it for light jobs.

More caretaker than owner.

You are right on modern Penny Farthing.

Nice chalk work. It is amazing how I find the Germans and Japanese seem to make quality products. Hope the belts provide great service. Wyzz looks like one of those dogs that love to smile for the camera.

Thanks.

I saw the 5 year olds initial work and saw what it had to be.

Wyzz is an awesome dog.

Jealous of me and Joy but I love messing with him by giving her extra attention.

I'm just about 40 minutes west of Tulsa, on the way to Ponca City and Wichita. Shower and mattress included.

Free aluminum hammers local pickup only.

You know how to tempt a man

Let’s see how this all comes together, we have only so many days and some must do stops.

Been to Tulsa before too.

One of our must stops is Fayetteville in Arkansas.

Finished the dash in the truck.

New air grinders work well.

As do the new belts on the Powerfile.

The dash metal had torn over time where the glovebox fits.

Welded up both sides.

Random holes filled.

All welded up ground back

Etch primered and awaiting the next phase.

That’s the weekend over.

Thank you.

The dash was my biggest fear so far.

I know there are loads more jobs, welding, cutting, prepping and the rest, but this worried me most, as it is in sight all the time.

Rian your dash repair came out great. Hardly even needs any mud!

Bret

I hope so Bret.

As mentioned, I am really thankful and pleased it came out this well.

Miles of welding to go still.

Great job on the radio delete panel Rian!!!

Thank you very much Joe.

And once prepped and painted it will keep me happy.

Rian, maybe when you come by here, we could run down and visit Andy?:dunno:

Been speaking to JB today as well, and if Andy can handle an influx of all sorts, it would be awesome.

I am absolutely fascinated with his smelter process and castings.

I am pretty sure Craig will love it too.

Smooth dash to the finish of the interior!

You guys just come on by, let me know when. A few hours would be nice if you want to sand cast some hammers while you're here. Better to spend the night so we can get an early start in the foundry. Tour price doubles with room and board but, hey, it's only money.

I got some brass scrap and a few other things for you to see. So I'm sure can make something out of them. We can invade Andy's domain, like a mini British invasion.

I am sure we will sort out a plan, may even change sleeping over plans, so as to maximise our time.

Casting hammers sounds too good to pass up. [emoji12]

For sure.

Hospitality without bounds.

You could drag the airplane over to Andy’s place and we could go to town making scrap.

PS. What is interesting is that Craig and I have both lived here on Mud Island over 16 years but were born and brought up in South Africa, which makes us even more odd balls. We both came because our jobs brought us here.

This should be great.

Prozac to the rescue.

Saw this in a skip on Sunday.

After work Monday I managed to get it for £10.00 after getting the driver to put the skip on the ground again and help me get it out and loaded into tbe van.

Unloaded back home.

Needs a clean up and paint.

Better welding table than the one I have.

made out like a bandit

I most certainly did make out like a Bandito Herb.

But you know as well as I do, if you keep your eyes open......

You will see stuff.

And always looking beyond the obvious brings me some luck.

Done well Rian:thumbup:

Thanks mate,

I wonder what this table would cost to replace.

It had been cit with a gas axe or plasma cutter a long time ago, so,it is not standard any more.

Love it, and once I clean it, possibly over the weekend, it will look, even better.

Sunday Bootfairs X2

My best day to date.

Random stuff, more than half for other people, but I scored a few nice bits too.

Most expensive was a £2.00 wooden Christmas tree that I would not bother making myself.

Two dog jackets for Dennis’ dogs, £1.50

When I got home and saw the price tags, I had to laugh.

We’re £7.00 each, marked down to 20p each somewhere in the past.

Ooooppps.

My one of two favourites, as I like smaller miniature stuff.

50p

Check the date in the front.

Bought an old cutthroat, really bad condition for £1.00

And a Sabatier knife for 20p

Cleaned the knife, sharpened up and used last night.... what a beauty.

Stuff I kept for myself, also with Christmas tree and frog cushion.

Just realised, this is a skip find too.

Very early BSA Meteor .22 Air rifle.

More vintage than weapon, so let’s see where it goes.

Mate Craig found it and gave it to me as his wife does not agree with guns on their property.

Plan is to restore it, I have bought a replacement barrel seal and 500 pellets.

Stripped it down and started on the stock, removing varnish and sanding down to very fine grade by hand.

Next up will be either Danish oil, Matt clear varnish or oil.

I will see what the metal work looks like once done as it is a bit rough.

Reversed off a raised verge outside my house a few weeks ago, when working on the Chevy speaker holes and managed to tear the bottom bumper lip that had been bodged together, including cable ties, before my time, off somewhat.

Been wanting to bodge it together ever since, and had a plan, just not been able to get to it.

The weekend when I discovered the welding bench in a skip at a panel shop, I was looking for a random bumper to cut up and repair and camouflage the damage. However, they did not want to give me a bent bumper, this evening on the way home, I had to fill my car and went to a different shop, they gave me a bumper off a Toyota Aygo as well as a Mk1 Mini tailgate in good condition which may become a small bench or wall hanging.

Measured up the bumper, marked out some lines and cut.

And with Mitsubishi turbo truck air scoop.

Needs to be fine tuned, and then self tappers from below.

Followed by painting the lip black. Needs something else to cover th original lip break.

Decided to reassemble after cleaning the gun.

Pellets and barrel seal,landed today.

Have shot with it in the dark tonight, packs a decent punch still.

TG serial numbers begin in 1974 and run to 1978

So that is that done too.

Over in St Louis, Dennis continues to build his gas station.

Roofing going on, he is laying the front deck flooring in thick oak.

This week he also managed to find and buy this old station gun.

Still needs loads of stuff to make it an authentic vintage gas station.

Later.

Bedtime now.

After work tonight, I cut the front hedge and shrubs, all the grass and then thought I would relax....... ermmm wrong.

Went down to the garage, moved Prozac and got started on cleaning the welding table/workbench.

Scraping all the paint off after clearing all the gunge of years off the flat surfaces took some time.

Finally two washes with petrol, and an old t-shirt gave me this, ready for either new paint or just leave it as is.

Still thinking.....

Opinions?

After reassembling the skip find air rifle last night and shooting in the dark, I also set it up tonight.

The little sight is not as good as the modern item I bought for the newer gun I bought recently

Size difference between the two calibers.

And after three sets of 5 pellets and setting up the scope, this was the result.

I am really impressed with this skip find.

So there you go, skip finds....

Free cash.

And lastly, a pic of Dennis’ progress with the deck out front of what will be his replica vintage gas station.

Note the broom on there.......

Made by Andy; he also is Blacksmith Thread here:

Weird day.....

Woke early, fell asleep again and then woken by 07.30 by Harley making tiny little noises to see if I was alive.

Had to run around to get some stuff from shops, needed a new hedge trimmer as the one I have abused the last 6 years is dull as hell now. Needed some flat headed self tappers and Danish Oil too for some deck chairs Imhave to give some attention to.

Eventually home by 12.00 and then down to the garage.

Had planned some truck time today, and also wanted to start investigating a door or fender.

Looking forward to trying these Tungsten Carbide tips out as well.

Prozac needed to be completed after I ran out of time last weekend.

Ghetto repair part one was to raise the front end a bit, no need for jack.

Ex Aygo front lip fitted and screwed in place.

While under there, I realised just how messed up,the underside of the front end is, before my time for sure.

Fitted.

Paint next.

Completed.

Lower than expected, that is good then.

Happy with the result.

Also took the wheels back to Black all round, but wonder if I should redo the red trim.

By 3.30I had called it a day, and came in for a drink.

Even Dukey, not too clever most days, got in on the action, licking the bottle of 7 UP in my hand.

Bootfair and hopefully truck time in the morning after other chores are done.

Later.

Hi Rian,

Well I have just finally caught up to the present time , July 2018 after reading your whole thread. It has taken me over two months ! Kinda like watching "back to the Future" movies as I would also from time to time read your current post of the day. I kept wanting to reply to various posts , but then "hang on , that was in 2015" so refrained or it would have made no sense. I love the way you do all this stuff, maybe that's why it has taken me so long to read your mixed grill thread- I keep getting inspired to do things at my place between readings !
cheers,

Greg
