I usually get steel for my projects from metalsdepot.com. Play around with the length of the stock you need to fit it into regular shipping vs tractor trailer freight. You can at least use the site to price out materials to decide what direction is best to go. Steel yards have never worked for me cause I'm at work when they are open and I can't get away to go pick it up. With the online source, it's sitting at my front door when I get home.

My only problem with the Kreg bench is that it is only 31" tall. I'm use to working at a height of 36" and so is my back. However, I was at my local lumber supply house and mentioned my objection to the owner who informed me that Kreg was coming out with a new model of the bench with adjustable legs that will extend to 36". Told me to wait. Didn't have a date for the release. Time will tell.
If the height isn't an issue for you, buy it.

The added 5" height comes from leveling feet with extra long studs, which is a hokey way of doing it. You could add casters and have a great bench that you can move to wherever you are working.

I bought a used Kreg router table based on the same metal legs and its HEAVY for what it is. Its very well built with great leg adjustment. It seems expensive but if you look at steel prices, labor involved, finishing, actual adjustable feet. Its probably not a bad price at all.

I put one together yesterday, its up to 35" with out the leveling feet. I set mine to 33" then 2" of leveling since my garage is sloped.

*edit, extended to 35" the minimum height with the leveling feet is about 36"

UPDATE: I did build a workbench but decided to go with wood instead of metal. It cost right at $175.00 for all of the material, including drawer slides.
