Could be. The WARDS' MASTER QUALITY line was made by Bridgeport Hardware and Manufacturing. BHM also made and sold their own MASTER QUALITY tools, branded BHM. I would actually think that WARD'S would drop their name on their stuff before BHM would on their own tools. The other possibility is BHM production for someone else, not WARD's.

Where are the MQ markings? On the flip side?

The Pipemaster is made by Erie. They were around during WW2. Here is mine from my WW2 machinists set.

That Pipemaster wrench is likely made by Erie Tool Works, they also made plumbing tools for Sears, Ridgid and Reed and others. http://www.lakeviewforge.com/about-us/company-history.html

Thanks for the info guys.....yeah, I saw the Erie name on the other side and just assumed it was Ridgid....was going to research it later after I cleaned it up.

I quickly ran a wire brush over it to clear the rust/dirt off so I could make out the name, and I noticed it look like the color is originally green.....does that mean wartime?

Edit: Just notice they were painted green on the link bluebolt posted

Just got back from picking an old shed/shop. The home where the guy lived and grew up. Sold it and is moving in a few weeks. He pointed out the areas that were off limits gave me a bucket and said to holler for him when I was done and we'd "work things out". Before he did that, he pointed to the nice metal cabinet I said was "cool" when I came in and let me know he was giving me that just for showing up. Great way to start a pick!

Here's the bucket of tools and some incidentals he threw in free (2nd pic) after we'd already agreed on the price. I will have to go thru the bucket and provide pics later this week but it's got lots of CM ignition wrenches -v-, lots of other wrenches from SO, Mac, etc, vise grips, Channellock pieces, 3 CM ratchets and 1 Proto, lots of different stuff. I think I recall tossing a Wizard ratchet in there if so it'll be my first Wizard ratchet.

I've already got plans for tomorrow to visit an 80-year old guy who is wanting to get rid of some of his tools. Says he has 9 vises, lots of woodworking tools as well as mechanic and machinsts tools. I figure to come home empty-handed but maybe the stars will align for me.

Where is the cabinet?

I was going to leave it in the car and deal with it tomorrow but then I remembered that pick I've got tomorrow morning and decided it needed to come out tonight. Went back out just now to grab a pic for you Outlaw! I'll be kind of surprised if you don't recognize it. I love the size of the drawers!

Had one of the best Garage sales I have had in a long time. Spent over a $100 them.

Started with pulling a small black impact socket set out of the black bin. 999 times out of 1000 it's ****. That day it was Snap-on. how much? He said $1. yeah baby! I couldn't get my dollar out fast enough. Moved some of the ****, and found a snap-on pry bar. At that point I just said I'd take the whole bin. Sold it for $30. I later found about 20 nice pieces of Craftsman, a snap-on double box end 12/14mm wrench, and a filthy, but now nice Mac flex head ratchet!

Then I got the huge Mitutoyo calipers from him for $10, and a set of Corvette Engine covers for $10 (this is an example image, mine are actually LS2), and the power washer, (yet to be tested) for $20. got the new-in-box tumbler for $10, and ran all the craftsman chisels through it.

Got the Braun light at HF for $30 w a coupon. It's awesome.

yeah, I saw the Erie name on the other side and just assumed it was Ridgid.....
They are very similar. Too similar for there not to be some kind of a connection, in my opinion, though I have never found one. My hunch is Erie was making them under license. I can't find any record of that, but I can't find any record of their own patent, either. I saw a HERCULES 6" pipe wrench this morning that also looked like an Erie version of a RIDGID to me.

I did okay at my Thursday early bird flea market.

Photo 1

The OD green canvas tool pouch with clips for hanging off of a belt is WWII, and I think it may be a Signal Corps lineman's pouch, but it only has a partial mfgr's marking ("HEL"), and I'm not even sure if that's the first three letters, so tracking this one down is going to be fun.

The long cardboard box to the right of that is marked "MAC NO. FG50" and there is a mint-y feeler gage inside with the same marking.

I have the PDF version of the 1927 Nicholson "FILE FILOSOPHY" book, so it's cool to be able to put the original in my library.

To the right of that is a an early Lenk PAT PEND blow torch, and to the right of the blow torch is an L.S. Starrett No. 4 screw pitch gage.

Just below the pitch gage is a Sears & Roebuck 4160 4-Way Pocket Screwdriver, flip side reading, "CRAFTSMAN THE GREATEST NAME IN TOOLS"

The other feel gage is a script logo Herbrand G-27.

The open gear ratchets are Indestro Select 6470 1/2-inch drive and a Cornwell 3/8-inch drive

The S-wrench is a very early (Brooklyn logo) Williams LIGHT SERVICE WRENCH.

The rusty roached attache style toolbox is a PLOMB LA 5495.

Photo 2

The good news is that the inside of the box and the near-complete set of Plomb 54XX 1/2-inch drive tools are in a little better condition. The caulkers are also Plomb.

The combo wrenches are Barcalo-Buffalo 13/16, 7/8, 15/16, and 1.

Mike, have you looked up how much those calipers cost?

Heck of a haul, right there.

Lugs. That torch is pretty cool. Never seen one like that.
Thanks. I have a few. They're called Duplex or Automatic Torches. No pumping, and there's no controlling the length of the torch flame, either. 1920's-1930's. If you're wondering how it works, you just fill up both chambers with alcohol. They both have wicks to soak up the fuel. You can't see this (I'll post close-up photos later), but you unscrew the cap on the side without the bent torch head and light the wick. When you position the nozzle of the torch head over the flame, it draws and vaporizes the alcohol very quickly out of the other chamber, creating a torch effect. They were very popular with radio hobbyists and others for soldering.

This is my second Lenk. My first was made of brass and a little more sophisticated model. I also found it at a flea market and showed it right here on the 2016 version of this thread. Link here.

EDIT: Speaking of the 2016 thread, has anyone encountered jakemac (the 2016 host!) anywhere on GJ lately?

I have. If you can believe it, the corvette engine covers are actually worth more than that Calipers! Calipers: $90+ Corvette Covers: $130-$150:eyecrazy:

I would have thought those calipers would be considerably more than that--they look like 24 inchers...

Great hauls Lugz and Mike!

I have several of the Lenk or Lenk style torches. I just want one that works properly! :see:

Lugz, no mention of the little trout knife? :dunno:

I’ll second that! Looks to be probably a ‘45 set if the ratchet and flex handle are plain steel. Great find. I have one of the little duplex torches in Dunlap.

Thanks. I was elated. First thing I bought. I was hauling it around on my hip all morning and every time I set it down at another tool guy's table I made sure he knew it was mine. Filled up my shoulder bag with everything else and let me tell you, I'm no weakling, but that was my workout for the day!

Lugz, no mention of the little trout knife? :dunno:
Haha. Sorry. It's a nice little CASE ** gutter with a scaler (about an inch of serrations) on the top edge.

Looks to be probably a ‘45 set if the ratchet and flex handle are plain steel.
Yep. I said this on the Plomb thread already, but in studying the catalogs, it falls between a mid-war Set No. 5400-OC and a late war Set No. 5400-AB. I will elaborate on the Plomb thread when it's cleaned up.

I wish. they are not the super fine style with the dial. They are 18". I should still do well on them on Ebay though. I should get my $10 back out of them at least. :D

You might want to look up the model number you have.

Mitutoyu 18" vernier calipers--which is what you appear to have--are $722.27 on Amazon right now...

Oh...holy ****. Thanks Cooter.

Doesn't mean they will move for anywhere near that price, though. I picked up a 24" pair of Starrett verniers last year for $5 to flip, couldn't get more than $60, still not bad but I had hoped for more. Not a big market for them, verniers are falling out of favor for the most part.

Still a good score. Mitutoyo makes good tools, packaging and cases embarrassingly cheaply made, but tools great.

Found a decent estate sale with tools. Lots of crud but a few gems. Got a starrett punch for a buck. Some vintage Westinghouse gauges for a buck each and a #6 bailey for 29$ total

Here's the contents of the bucket of tools I picked up from CL yesterday. I'd like to know what you guys recommend to remove paint and rust while maintaining the integrity of the metal. I've tried vinegar and don't like it. I can't recall if Evaporust will remove paint. I know electrolysis will but it's kind of a pain to set up and then clean up.

Pic#1: 8 different Channellock tools, 1 looonnng needle nose pliers, adjustables (4" Williams, 4" Diamalloy, 6" Crestaloy. 12" Proto LA, 15" Diamalloy), vise grips (lg - Craftsman, Klein, Petersen (3))

Pic#2: Socket tray, metal wire brush, ratchets (1/2" CM, 1/2" Wizard, 1/4" Proto, 1/4" CM), 6" Diamalloy adj, 3 files, Snap-On sockets (4), screw starters (Proto (5), Mac, K-D, Snap-On, CM, Ullman Devices Corp (2), last one maker not marked but Pat. 2150184 shows registered to New Britain), Tru-Value ruler, torx flex drivers (2), Klein hex key set, P&C offset driver, key chain thing w/ auto return I will use for my drill press chuck, battery terminal brush/

Pic#3: CM metric wrenches (3) 2 fill holes in my set, Snap-On (5), Matco (2), Armstrong, Bonney, John Deere, ATD-1724?, Proto (2), CM V-Starter & Manifold wrench,
ignition & small wrenches Proto (2), Filson (1) all others are CM.

Pic #4: Gun cleaning patches, Starrett hacksaw, Chevy Apache 10 badge, 15" breaker bar/extension only marked "3222 Chromium Vanadium Made in USA" who made this?, CM 1/4" breaker, obvious.

Pics #5 & #6 are the freebies from yesterday. Signs, tray of vintage brass wood screws & asian-made vise. Cabinet is made by Sperry Rand, model is badged Victor. Measures, 13" wide x 28" deep x 51" tall. Each drawer has a 2" tall divider that runs full depth. Side to side the two sections are each 5-1/8" with 3-5/8" height clearance. Each of the sections has the movable divider. Excellent condition, one bottom rear corner is bent a tad but doesn't impact drawers. I haven't yet given any thought to what I want to store in it. :)
