Overhead Door Garage Opener

I moved into my new house about a month ago and discovered that my garage door will not work like it's supposed to. It will go up by pushing the button on the wall or on the remote, but the door will not go down without standing in the garage holding the button on the wall down. It is an Overhead Door Legacy model. The left side sensor blinks twice, then pause, and repeats. The right sensor is not on at all. I looked at the manual and it gives me a few suggestions but I don't know how to go about checking the wires. Anyone have any ideas? Help!

sounds to me like either something's blocking the beam between the sensors or they're mis-alligned. Most openers won't let the door go down if either of these cases exist.

If you're concerned about the wiring, just disconnect from both ends (opener and each sensor), twist one end of each wire together(creating 2 loops) and do a continuity test on each loop

good luck!

If it's the sensor alignment, if you don't have kids, or simply don't like the ones you currently have, you could relocate the sensors temporarily so that they're touching, face-to-face.

I wouldn't recommend it as a long-term solution, and I'd definitely make sure that the door reverses when it his an obstruction, just in case.

I have about a ten year old Craftsman unit that does this too. The door will start down and then reverse with the overhead light flashing, the same result as if the door had hit something on the way down or the torque setting were too low. It seems to be temperature related. When it's warm outside it works fine. When it gets cold I have to hold the button down. I don't know that there is a fix for this, except to throw it out and buy a better unit.

Have you checked the roller wheels?

You might try lubing the tracks, as well as the door hinges.

There may be an adjustment for how sensitive the sensor looking for an obstruction is.
If the rollers are not well oiled or the cold has stiffened them up then there is too much force needed to push the door down and the opener thinks it has hit something.
Check you book for where the adjustment is.

I recently had this same problem with the same model. Get some new low voltage wire and rerun the sensor wires. even if just for a trouble shooting step, I bet you will find your problem.
