I just picked up an Erie No. 70 vise yesterday and it has 7" jaws. People have been saying its made by the Erie Tool Works and or Hollands. It is a very large vise, its almost as big as my 8" reed. Im not sure who made it but I would love to find out. If you guys have any info that would be great. Also if you check out my profile, I have an album of my vises.

Jeff, show these guys more of the swivel lock down and more of your pic's of your Erie 70. Everyone is hung up on those mechanics vise today and missing out on your big guy. Check Out this type of Lock Down setup

Trying to figure out what Athol you have TT, can't tell from the pic:s. You never mention any spec:s and model number. Sure a sweet looking vise.

I haven't posted in months but I'm still at it. Here's two of my recent acquisitions over the past couple weeks. On top is a Reed 204 I got for $45 (delivered) and an American Scale No. 79 6" swivel jaw, swivel base vise I picked up this afternoon for $120. I went ahead and took a wire wheel to the 79 because it had been stored outside under a workbench where it had little cover.

I need ibuprofen and an ice pack after moving that one!

Riley You did very well. The 79 despite being outside seems in great shape specially after clean up.

Replaced drive shaft bearing TWICE...forgot the thrust washer first time, it was still in the old bearing. Fortunately I had also forgot to punch the nut so R&R was only 30 minutes.

I finished the Reed 406 R I picked up last weekend. I had asked about color ideas and the Valspar Satin Leafy Rise from KMScott was really nice but Lowes no longer sells Valspar spray. So this is what I ended up with. I don't hate it but it may look a bit too tropical? Krylon Satin Jade. Oh well, 2-3 hours to strip and repaint and I know it will come apart real easy!

Still not sure if I will keep or sell. 164lbs is tough to move around.

He must have better self control than me, because I have two vises now.
I'll clean this one up and put it to work.

NB Choice of Color is obviously a matter personal taste. Once I painted a Parker what was supposed to be bright red but it turned out to be burgundy/ plum color. Initially I did not like it but it seems everyone else on this thread liked the color. After a few days it kind of grow on me too and now I really like it.

If you ask me, your 406R turned out pretty nice and I like the color and I would not repaint it.

I really like that color a lot, but I do agree that right now it doesn't "pop", which I think is the reason you're hesitating. What I'd suggest is cold-bluing the slide/handle/lockdowns (following by boiled linseed oil bake or paste wax sealing) to darken them and offer more contrast. I would also suggest picking up a white paint pen from Hobby Lobby/Amazon/where ever and going over the manufacturer name/model. That'll really bring it together, in my opinion.

Great vise, a Wilton 745 was the first vise that purchased that I intended to restore rather than just use. Darn thing was frozen completely solid and was a beast to get back up and restored. As happy as I was with how it turned out, it wasn't *done* until I installed the new jaws I picked up from KMScott...those just made it.

Here's another view of it after getting it home. Damn thing was down in the guys basement lol. Was definitely well worth the drive and effort. I love the base.

It that base welded together? What material is the shelf? Stainless? Aluminum?

The base is cast iron and used to be a Ecoa semi trailer jack. By itself it weighs close to 150 lbs. The table is 3/4" thick aluminum that looks like it was fly cut flat on the top. I'll take some more pictures of how the table was adapted to the base. It's really done well.

Did you remove the vise from the base when you were pulling the base up the stairs from the basement? I guess the wheels might have helped. It might have been nice to have a set of handles attached to the base (on the wheel sides) to be used when tilting the base to push/pull it using the wheels.

Like VA I am also curious about model number on the side, as in at least in the photo the last digit/letter does not seem to resemble a 5 and more like a J.

Thanks guys, yes it is a 205

I took the table and vise off as an assembly from the base. The guy who made it, made a really nice flange that secures to the base tube with set screws.
