Pressure washer engine won't hardly turn with spark plug installed

When I adjust valves on any engine I don't worry about getting the engine to TDC. I just turn it over until one valve is fully open and adjust the other valve and then do the same for the other valve.

I saw a YT video yesterday where they said +90% the cause of this problem is a missing or jacked up keyway.

Is the keyway on the pump side or the recoil starter side? It wasn't clear from the video since he had the engine apart.

The key goes on the engine crankshaft then on the pump is another keyway that slides over the crank. It's simple to take off 4 bolts. Being a used pressure washer the chance the pump is bad is very high but usually the engine is still fine. I bet if you take the pump off the engine will run.

NOW you tell me!!!!! Here I was obsessing over TDC and whether I had it or not. :lol_hitti

ETA: So basically TDC is pretty much irrelevant. The key is having adjusting one valve while the other is fully open.

Your last statement doesn't make sense to me. The pump doesn't appear to have any affect on the engine. The spark plug does.

Heheh, but if you know how a 4 stroke engine small engine really works then this works every time. You are not dealing with the compression release at TDC.

The pump is four bolts. You can run the engine independently of the pump easily. But, buy a cam etc... Pull the pump and go from there. I can't believe you checked the valves without pulling the pump. First thing to go on a pressure is the pump not the engine. I hate to let you know but on any used pressure washer the pump is likely bad.

If it turns over fine with the spark plug out, why would the pump have anything to do with it?

The important part is making sure the cam isn't applying any lift at all while you're checking the gap. You want to make sure the clearance is set on the lowest part of the cam lobe. A cam lobe is roughly egg shaped, you want to check clearance at the bottom part of the egg, not on the tip, or the ramp.

That's the first mystery.

The 2nd is why do they keep saying it?

As far as the pump is concerned, I'll deal with that when I get to it. Worst case, I have a friend with a PW that does have a bad Honda engine like this one (ran it with no or low oil), so the pump works fine. So, assuming it will bolt up to this engine (or vice versa) I'm not too worried about it.

Just for the heck of it, like others suggested, disconnect the pump from the engine and then get the engine started. If it does nothing to help you, you will not be out that much time.
