Paint Hardener Question

I'm tuning up a 1340 Jet lathe and I'd like to paint the components as I finish rebuilding them. I would like to brush/roll Rustoleum Hammerd Silver but I really don't want to deal with the excessive dry time. Will acrylic hardener work in the hammered paint as well as it does in standard Rustoleum Enamel?

I cant seem to find any mention good or bad about adding hardener and I'm not interested in doing this twice.

actually what I have read is paint that has hardener in it is more brittle and not as robust for machine tools. you may ant to look into that . the longer drying time may be a better option

I use enamel hardener in the Rustoleum Hammered paint when spraying chassis. It does get hard. I have never had a problem with it chipping. The hardener cuts the dry time to less then an hour on a mid 70's day.

Awesome, I'm glad someone has done it with good results. So much info on the net about the reg rustoleum and I haven't found anything about hardening hammered.
Thanks for sharing your positive results.

I too have added Valspar (Tractor Supply)hardener with excellent results to RustOLeum. Both sprayed and brushed. Just remember the hardener is toxic especially if sprayed.

Thanks for the replies.

May Pop, I'm definitely brushing but I will still wear a respirator.

Pcmeiners, I usually use Acetone if I thin rustoleum for that very reason.

Read the can. Most of the hammered versions reduce with Xylene. Acetone may separate the silicone and paint. It's pretty good for cleanup though.

One problem with lacquer thinner in enamel is when repainting at a later date the paint will craze or lift because of the previous lacquer thinned paint job.

I painted everything that was ready for paint today. Silver hammered with 25% gloss black added to give me almost a gunmetal grey. 16oz with 1oz hardener with a 30 min sweat in time straight from the can, no thinner.

I was able to brush it on thick enough to flow out and let it do the hammered thing, dried to the touch in 2 hrs. I feel like I'll be able to start reassembling the lathe in a couple of days instead of weeks. I will never use hammered without hardener again!

We need pics of your work!
The hammered comes in a few shades of gray. I am using a few on my Astro Van build.
Black. The rear end, front spindles and sway bars are all black.

Silver. The chassis is silver.

The engine peripherals will not get hot enough to hurt the paint. You can spray it with anything you want. Just get it squeaky clean and you'll be good.
