Today's ES haul:

B&D Scrugun
Rockwell 505 sander
Assorted old school screws
Schumacher 6/12 VDC 2/6 amp charger
100 and 120 grit AO sanding belts
120 grit SC roll
Sanding belt/disk cleaner
Dowl-it Model 2000 doweling jig with multiple bushings
7R Vise Grip
Tacking hammer head
KD drum brake spring tool

It was nice that the gentleman kept all manuals for his power tools. The scrugun will be handy for an upcoming drywall job in my parent's garage. I've been looking for a non-automatic charger for electrolysis - at $5, I'm pleased.043ee6feb891677edb32f2408ffbefd9.jpg

Picked this stuff up on Thu. Former Forest Service fire pilot and Hollywood movie pilot (The Blue Max, Those Magnificient Men in Their Flying Machines, Jonathon Livingston Seagull, and he said just about every flying movie from the '60s and '70s) getting rid of some stuff so his kids won't have to. Sadly, he and his wife also dealt in antiques so these weren't estate sale prices. Had they been I'd would have left with a significant haul. As it is, I got my first Plomb pebble ratchet and wrench. The 1/4" frankenset does have mostly Plomb sockets but I'm not sure they're correct for the ratchet. Not that I would know. The extension is asian garbage and the breaker bar is Proto. He gave me the broken Defiance box cutter. If I ever drop mine on that side I'll have a replacement at least. Lastly, a long underline Craftsman Circle-H extension.

What do the Plomb sockets look like from the pebble era?

Still SLOW, Slow, slow...

But the tool/Shop stuff ratios is much better, just not a lot of it out there...

A large Coleman 1A Funnel (my first this size)sanding belts (good timing I was on my last one, and BILL - seems to be sanding media day, No?) A Bonney "stubby" speeder - (My first stubby), Proto LA bent tip pliers;

And a Jeff Moss alert on the wrench! its Bell System wrench!

attachment.php

JEFF: the wrench is odd (more than its size...) The open end appears unfinished? as forged... (also on the outside edges...) 1" gap, and the square end measures > 3/8 (about .385 -390?) :dunno:

attachment.php

Less tool related are the 8" lamp socket shade, Pyrex measuring cup, and switch pull chain.

attachment.php

Back side of the shade and poor attempt to get the funnel markings:

attachment.php

Funnel markings and inside the funnel (there is a screen filter under the felt filter)

Mike: Hard to tell from here but the sockets you picked up from Waldo Pepper look like they're probably later than the 1944-48 Pebble period.

Outlaw: That Bell System wrench sure is unique. Whoever made it and whatever its purpose, they didn't worry about excess steel around the service openings! That might be the roundest jaws on an open or check nut end I have ever seen.

A CL find...never used set of Record Marples chisels, some 1/4" shank router bits, steel & brass wire brushes and a couple of Bessey deep throated C-clamps. The router bits are Porter-Cable, Oldham, Vermont American and the little one on the bottom I can't see a maker name but it's US made. All the bits were either never used or used once. The chisel sizes are: 1-1/4", 1", 3/4", 1/2", 3/8" & 1/4". Oh yeah, he gave me a container of Porter-Cable FF joiner biscuits.

Picked this up for free off Craigslist. I plan to use the curved steel to make a firewood rack.bf51451dbb2fb8ab4492cce48bb6aa12.jpg

Picked this up today at a YS/estate sale. Overheard seller say his grandfather could be useful for once in his life, putting a few bucks in his pocket by selling grandfathers stuff.

I felt no shame in talking him down to $10 from $20, after pointing out the rust on the bottom (superficial).

Nice pickup Dave! Shame to hear the guy was basically bad-mouthing his grandfather.

Lugz says it is a wartime box, too which is always cool.
They pop up on the 'toolboxes' thread here from time to time, usually marked Duplex, who made them for Snap/on, less frequently marked Snap/on. Always for peanuts, seemingly. I would be happy with either marking, but I have never been so lucky. LesserSon tipped me off to one in an antiques store in Lancaster, PA, a few years back, but it was an arm-and-leg price. That exterior cantilevered design, driven by the handle, is ingenious!

I don't know about the sockets in the tray or the box itself, Macduf, because I can't really see enough of them, but the hinge handle in Pic 4 and the socket in Pic 5 are Duro-Chrome or Indestro without a doubt.

Those look like an early cad plated knurled set to me. It’s too bad that the flex handle has lost its detent ball. The hole in some of the sockets is just to let the user line the socket up with the detent ball for better retention. They were only included on some sockets. The Walden boxes with fewer hinge elements were earlier. Lugz, I’m sure that you are exaggerating about my Walden fetish! As soon as I find a 6 point knurled 7/16” dark finish socket with a “V”, I’ll quit looking.
-Don
Have several dark finish 1/4 sockets, and can take a look for you. Stevens Walden box, most of a set in my trade bin.

IMOUsually chromed, smallish font, 6pt, and without date codes.
Also your combo seems to have undeveloped pebbles which is less common.

You guys are finding some great stuff!
I stopped by the recycling yard first thing Friday morning for a 'tool sale'. Mostly China and Taiwan stuff but I did manage to bring home 12 pounds of USA wrenches at $0.50 per pound. $6 spend.

attachment.php

Friday evening, I was taking my son across town and passed by a T.O.O. that advertised 'TOOL SALE'. Well, you KNOW I'm gonna stop at that! Ended up being an old timer who had passed and his family was clearing out his shop. Lots of shop equipment. I bought an old Craftsman jig saw for $5 (not pictured). I asked about hand tools and they said there weren't any, but they proceeded to lead me to the back of the garage. There was a 4" Columbian swivel vise mounted to the bench. 'how much', I asked. $15... SOLD! Also ended up with a bin of sockets and wrenches ($10) and a drill index full of bits ($5). The small parts organizer was free.

In the bin was a large pile of Taiwan and Japan sockets, the other piles pictured are all USA tools. 3/8" standard and deep sockets, 1/2" standard and deep sockets, small amount of 1/4" drive. Two 3/4" drive extensions (Cornwell and Indestro), a couple of 1/2" extensions, a couple 3/8" extensions and a handful of wrenches. $35 out the door!

attachment.php

I went to the flea on Saturday and probably spent more on the handful of things I brought home than I did at the other 2 stops combined. Still some nice stuff.

Partial Husky 3/8" set, complete Shopsmith t-handle hex wrench set, Wright ratchet, 1-3/16" P&C socket, SK torque wrench, Fleet and Action 1/4" drive ratchets, couple of midget nut spinners, handful of wrenches and a few other things.

attachment.php

Pretty good weekend for me. :3gears:

Someone put a lot of thought, time, and effort into this mini gravity car, from the frame to the steering linkages to the emergency brake, and the body panels are all buttoned up nice and tight, with tight seams. And of course it has a tool box in the back! :)

Lug: while I think they do SOAP BOX DERBY racing still i've yet to see one of those cars for sale or in person. nice find.

also that 12 drawer cabinet isn't a common size so hope you find a spot for it.

ALL: I picked up a few nuts and bolts this week, but I really wanted the Rotobin so it was a lot of work, but it's mine now.

also picked up a little vise too.

cheers and hope you all have a great day

$16 today at Jakes flea. It is hot and humid. Mrs LesserSon and I headed down on our way to pick up daughter #3, who spent the past two nights with daughter #2. Mrs LesserSon spent her breakfast money on a baseball cap for me, which has gone missing. Bless her, but then I bought breakfast out of my wrench budget. So I left a couple Bonney duplicates behind that I would have oherwise rescued from oblivion.
Out among the tables (most were higher on the hill due to some rain-induced muck), I had a good conversation with a vendor who had a Disston Victory saw of his grandfathers. He anticipated almost every remark I was going to make about it. Rosewood handle, about an inch shapened away, etc. Nice saw, but not quite what I look for. Got these two S-shaped adjustables. The Barcalo is heavier and longer; curious to figure what dimension they have in common that is 8”. A 1/2dr Snappy socket from 1945. I got what looks like an ancient No8 Disston saw for the four split-nuts. I will give it a closer look, but I think there isn‘t much hope for the rest of it. And I found these 16” machinist hammer handles a week too late for my 32oz Bonney, alas!

The seller, a house liquidator, wanted $50, I offered $30, he countered with $35. SOLD! I cannot overemphasize how well-built it is. I like the natural wood finish, but I am already contemplating red, with a Snoopy on it, or possibly some classic A.J. Foyt Indy theme. Oh, and there is definitely still a Soap Box Derby race, now with all kinds of older custom classes. I like the old-fashioned look of this one.

drivesitfar said:

It's going under the workbench, behind "Curtain #1" (the 1980 GMTK tool inspection layout). :)

...but I really wanted the Rotobin...
Congrats! I'm always hoping to run into one. :D

I'd be totally on the fence if I found a rotobin. I can't make up my mind if the floor space justifies what it holds, compared to other bin systems, (but it is good for keeping stuff off the floor), and I don't like open bins as they load up with dust, flying debris, etc... :headscrat

STILL Slow today. ONE sale (that I had not already Been to or passed on...)

Only the Bonny, Ignition wrench, the toy gun and the laptop lock (probably for my daughter about to leave for school for 2 years)

the Toy gun is definitely Vintage IMO: No "safety orange", and it was made in USA, Savanna TN to be exact.

I'm kind of confused by that topmost breaker bar. Normally a breaker is extra long or at least a single diameter to make it easier for a cheater pipe. That one appears to be short and the dual diameter would make a cheater difficult. What's the deal?

I'm kind of confused by that topmost breaker bar. Normally a breaker is extra long or at least a single diameter to make it easier for a cheater pipe. That one appears to be short and the dual diameter would make a cheater difficult. What's the deal?

Perhaps hinge handle would be a better term for it. Or spinner. It also has a detent in the end of the handle to use an extension as a cheater. Or maybe people in the olden days were super strong.:bounce:

I don't normally stop at garage sales. But yesterday morning for some reason I did. For $5 I picked up this Jacobs ball bearing chuck, with the arbour. The arbour was a bit battered, but the chuck moved smoothly. I put it in my drill press and checked the runout - .006. I cleaned up the arbour with a file on the high spots and some fine emery cloth, and retested, the runout was down to .003! So I don't think I'll even buy a new arbour, I'll just run it the way it is.

Original and "new". Original went to 16mm - 5/8", new is only 13mm.

P.S. that was the only tool there!

I'm confused by the confusion! :) Hinge handles, flex heads, or nut spinners, take yer pick of actual period correct catalog terminology, were not used exclusively for breaking free stubborn nuts and bolts. They were routinely used to turn fasteners on and off in places where a ratchet would not easily fit, like older L handles, with or without a crossbar. It is interesting that they have become so synonymous with common modern usage that the modern term seems to belie their construction.

Last weekend was a total bust but this weekend was a little better:

SO torqometer was $5, stubby gasket scrapper $1, NOS SK ratchets were $1.50/ea, 3/4" Plomb ratchet was $25. I have no idea what that little flex nut driver was used for.

Vintage Sansui Receiver was $5 in mint condition:

Found this "time capsule" on Craigslist. A General CB-45G for $10!
I had to go 115 miles to pick this up, the guy didn't tell me it was in the original box and I rode one of my motorcycles to pick it up. If I had known it was still in the original factory box I would have drove my car.
Here are the pics.
