Been a while since I've been on the board, and been a while since I went shopping too. Here's a few things I found yard sale picking this weekend:

Pic 1: all for $8
two large DOE wrenches (no-name and a Fairmount 1-5/16)
two box wrenches, a Cornwell and a "Forged Select Steel"
Craftsman small tin snips
yellow plumb bob
Snap-On needle-nose pliers
Utica 91-8 adjustable wrench

Pic 2: all for $13
two full 1-lb cans of IMR 4831 gunpowder, and a full container of Hercules Unique gunpowder

Pic 3: all for $4
small metal card file holder with some smaller drill bits
mostly full 2-lb container of miner's lamp calcium carbide

Tin Congrats on your new tool buddy!

Great hauls guys.

RagTop - That Blue Point flare wrench is an interesting one. Maybe a special made but I’m not positive, I thought they were only single ends. . I wonder if Snapmom is familiar with that one. The odd combo wrench looks like an IH International Harvester.

I thought it was a really neat looking old BP, buddy had it at his booth at the flea and gave it to me for a couple dollars, one side has about 1/4 of one tip missing. I wondered bout the odd combo, looked to have a circle with HH inside it. the long skinny one looks to have treasury markings. Ill have to have someone that knows bout those check on it. Lugs got my last one. Think the numbers were the same type.

Rag:
It does have a Bonney Zenel look, but also a Penens or JPDanielson look. It is a Jeep tappet wrench. Scroll to figure33 on page45 of this document to see it in use.
The S-curved Old Forge 79A with point at one end and flat on the other is a cotter-pin puller.

If they're all Walden-Worcester, I'd love to see a shot of the sockets from the side (walls/knurling/markings).

Here you go...

A couple of the sockets have a hole thru the wall and the breaker bar does not have a detent ball. I dont know if these are related.

It is, indeed, a Federal Stock Number. The "KMO" marking is Kent Moore Organization. They supplied a second echelon maintenance kit made especially for the jeep, and the tappet wrench, as LesserSon pointed out, was just one of the pieces. This kit was in mobile shops, and fixed site shops, just behind the action. It was not part of the on-board jeep toolkit. I will post a pic later of the entire kit. Close to 100 pieces. Mainly specialty (valve, brake, suspension, etc) tools, KMO's niche. If you're not familiar with KMO, K-D would be a good comparison. Or K.R. Wilson in Buffalo, though they weren't as big as KMO or K-D. Honestly, I haven't paid too much attention to the KMO jeep kit in terms of collecting, and didn't realize that they third partied some of the production, though that makes sense.

I agree with 3bay that the tappet wrench looks like a Bonney Zenel. I see where LS is going with the J.P. Danielson reference, because their Controlled Steel line was concave paneled like that as well, but I don't know if it included tappet wrenches. LS also mentioned PENENS, but they were made for PENENS by J.P. Danielson with Controlled Steel dies, and too late for WWII.

I did get your last FSN tool, and I will take this one, too, if you're parting with it. :)

I'll PM you.

Thanks, Brian. My hinge handles have detent balls. But there was a lot of small variations across Walden sets (including detent provisions or not on sockets, in the same set!). Don (d42jeep), who probably has twenty or so Walden sets (not kidding, I've lost count!) would know better than I. I do know that the tommy bar alone is worth its weight in collecting gold. :)

Today's finds at the local used tool place:

Blue Point Supreme punch (is that the Snap On brand, or something unrelated?), three rather old-looking (30s?) The Dillings&Spencer Co. DOE wrenches, Walden-Worchester DOE wrench, Diamond (Diamond Calk Horse Shoe Co, Duluth Minn. on back) 8" Crescent wrench, P&C/Herbrand/Thorsen/Craftsman sockets, and an assortment of stubby screwdrivers and a pick. $4.70 with tax :)

PS: Could someone tell me how to do attachments correctly so that they open on top of the text and you could click through them, instead of going to every one separately? Thanks!

If you mean 'Attached Thumbnails', as in RedVise's post #5454 a few posts upthread, you attach them from your hard drive, like this...

At the bottom of the Quick Reply window, click on [Go Advanced]
Click on [Manage Attachments]
Click [Browse]
...find your files on your drive...
Click [Open] in your file browser
Click [Upload]
...scroll down in that window...
Click [Close this Window]
When you've finished typing your post in the white space...
Click [Submit Reply]

EDIT:

Two gotchas:

- If you don't remember to hit the [Close this Window] button it will not work.

- You may have to re-size your .jpg file to 700 x 500 (landscape photos) or 400 x whatever (portrait photos). The auto-resizing utility has been hit and miss for me.

Ah, thank you for the resemblance explained.
Last weekend I had picked up an iron can opener. Got it cleaned up and able to read the maker: “H.&A. Gerecke”. I found one reference to an iron spoke-pointer, and a couple to locks. No mention of where or when they were in operation.

Thank you, Mr. Lugnutz, sir! I will give this a try next time I post multiple images.

It is the Snap-on brand.

Ah, thank you for clarifying. Any idea which kind of punch it was originally - center, pin, roll pin? Googling for "9-608" doesn't bring up any, and I am very unfamiliar with punches and Snap-On/Blue Point in particular.

Are you sure it's a "9" and not an "S"? It looks like a drive pin punch to me, and the Supreme 600 series were Snap/on's drive pin punches by model number, but typically prefixed by an "S". Unless it's older than the 40's and early 50's and they didn't something different that I am not familiar with.

Right you are! A bit of cleanup revealed that what looked like a 9, sure enough turned out to be an S. There is on on eBay, and if it's to go by, looks like it's supposed to have a flat drive punch working end. A little grinding/filing should sort it.

Lugz and d_42, I added the tappet wrench to my FSN spreadsheet, which is long overdue for a public posting.

Thanks, Brian. My hinge handles have detent balls. But there was a lot of small variations across Walden sets (including detent provisions or not on sockets, in the same set!). Those look like an early cad plated knurled set to me. It’s too bad that the flex handle has lost its detent ball. The hole in some of the sockets is just to let the user line the socket up with the detent ball for better retention. They were only included on some sockets. The Walden boxes with fewer hinge elements were earlier. Lugz, I’m sure that you are exaggerating about my Walden fetish! As soon as I find a 6 point knurled 7/16” dark finish socket with a “V”, I’ll quit looking.

I’m sure glad you posted this. A few days ago I got a box like this. Need to see what was in it. Think it was just various ****. Photo in a minute.

Shown as purchased a few days ago. I did not pay $25. It was included in a hoard.

The red Walden boxes with chrome sockets are postwar but still very good quality. The 1/4” Thorsen flex handle and the S-K ratchet look to be in good condition. The STW may be Stevens Walden.

Good point. I am back to no exaggeration whatsoever! :)

I had the kind of small but classic haul out of my Thursday Early Bird today that makes me want to keep chugging along in this crazy hobby.

View media item 85508
Everything you see came out of the same old (as in yer granddad's) oldtimer's box except for...the Reed pipe threader set (soon destined for Galaxie-Ed's 'Tap and Die' thread), the chain thingie next to it (not a valve-stem fishing tool, not sure what it is, found it in a box with a bunch of homemade dollies and hammers that was clearly an old body work box, but it could be something household-y, like for curtains... :wtf:), and the little DOE wrench at the very bottom center of the photo (WESTLINE ISN 723 made by Indestro, soon destined for Rileysan's 'Western Auto' thread and four.cycle's 'Show Your Duro-Indestro' thread).

The screwdriver with the odd "Grover" handle is from the Nashua Paper Company, in Nashua, NH.

Lots of special wrenches, mainly 1920's/30's Duro, Bonney and Snap/on.

That SOE near the bottom has the British MOD Broad Arrow stamp, a 1945 forged-in date, and a mfgr's name I can’t make out.

Can’t read the name on the ignition file, either, but I like it for the Indestro set I found last week.

There's a surprise for Don in this lot too. Let's see if he can find it!

And those who've been following one of my other more recent threads, linked here, might just recognize the odd L-shaped thing with the hex male drive tang near the lower center of the photo! That's right. It's the offset ratchet head for a Spezial Werkzeugfabrik Feuerbach socket set!! A few weeks ago I didn’t know these sets existed. They are extremely odd (Made in Germany for export in the 1920's. There's only 3 or 4 of them on GJ!) Now I find one of the pieces, an orphan offset ratcheting head, one of which just happens to be missing from the second set I picked up! Not the same flea market either. Other side of the state.

Love this hobby.

I am counting my blessings at the moment. After my Prentiss #26 find I was checking out garage sale ads on CL. I came across one this morning that had tools listed. They were holding the sale today Friday and Saturday from 8-12. I snuck out of the office for an early lunch to go see what they had. Found a Columbian D6 newer model but left it. As I was leaving I noticed some thick metal legs behind some clothes in a corner.

I went over and moved the clothes out of the way and there is an old Atlas metal lathe on a heavy duty stand. Ways look clean but dusty. Lots of knick knacks piled on it over the years. I ask the son how much for it and he says I'll give it to you for $100. I pause for a second to not look tooooo excited.

I asked if I pay now could I come back this weekend and pick it up (I drive a small car) since my brother in law has a truck and we would need him to help load it.

SCORE!! I've always wanted to own a metal lathe for projects. Now to see if the thing is in working condition or will need parts.

No photos yet. I'll update this weekend once I get her home.

60 bucks.
Snap on
Matco
Bluepoint.
Proto
Extension are Chinese.

I left behind the snap on offset and short wrenches, didn't glance twice at the sockets on rails.
It was the 2nd day late at the yard sale. Many people didn't want the stuff above.

Tell me About the little pearl blue handled snap on screwdrivers.

I said no to that box for 500 bucks with a bunch of similar tools in it.

I sorted all that ****.
The most interesting is this little one way ratcheting screwdriver set. It should work with any right shaft sized screwdriver. No cogs or flats in the mechanism, just roller bearings(?).

It's Bluepoint.
I go back tomorrow to find the missing game blue handled snap on screwdriver.
The red snap on screwdrivers is a racing edition.
I'm guessing the freeze plug tool is for guys who do not own large sockets.
Ac Guage? Meh.
Chisels, added to the pile.

Would I find it in this catalog or is that a tacky question?
