I see it now. Agreed, jaw was cut and possibly on both sides.

Maybe one jaw was broken at the edge at some point and that was someone's way of fixing it. It would bother me to have the jaw faces hanging off the sides, but if the vise was shaved down on both sides, I don't see any reason it couldn't be saved by cutting the jaw faces to match, or replacing them with new in the right size. It could be used as is, but it's definitely not ideal. If you wanted to clamp something narrow at the very edge, for example, it would be putting a ton of stress on the jaw faces/screws that wouldn't normally be the case if the jaws were the correct size. The only negative I can think of for making the jaw faces match would be that you'll be more limited in what long stuff you could hang vertically down past the slide. Other than that it would just be like having an extra-beefy 4" vise instead of a 5" or whatever it ends up being.

On another note, my Father had a stroke and Mother had a heart attack the same day, so the last 3 months I have been pretty busy taking care of them, my jaw website is low on many jaws and my vise work has slowed down to a trickle. I am seeing light at the end of this tunnel as my father will move in with my Mother this Friday in Assisted living and I can get back to a normal life.

Dr Scott
I am sorry to hear about your parents health issues. It is never easy to see and deal with a loved one's serious health issues and in your case with both parents having issues at the same time must be really tough. May the Lord give you strength.

Thoughts and prayer's for your parents, yourself and your family. I hope all turns out the best.

Kevin, sorry to hear about the declining health of your parents. As you said, hopefully things will be better now they are together at an assisted living center.

My thoughts and best wishes for you and your parents.

I often have trouble keeping up with this thread, 5-10 pages behind. This is one of those occasions I have caught up and figured I should post some new vises from past months.

Back in May I picked these 2 up at a flea market.

First was this Record "0", which when I got home I saw I already had one....no problem, for $20 I was happy.

Then I found this guy for $100. First ever post vise for me. The price was right and I liked the condition and workings on it. Anyone familiar with the name on it (2nd pic)?

About a month ago I got this Parker 22 (3 1/2" jaw). Nice condition and it must be pretty old as it is "hole through the bench" swivel.

Here it s pictured with its smaller brother, a Parker 20 (2 1/2" jaws), which I got 3-4 years ago.

I have seen (photos) and heard of Buckworth Anvils and I think I read somewhere (may be on iforgeiron.com) that Buckworth supposedly was a Canadian company but I have no way to verify this.

PS
May be if you talk to it, it might respond with eh and then we will know for sure :bounce:

FMC Very nice score. I can only clearly see one of the patent dates and that is March 23 75 and the other one is like Nov 26, Dec 10 & 17 1867 (?) . This is for sure a very old fellow but in good condition.

Lastly, I got this yesterday, a 7" parker. Looks like the casting number was on its last legs, but I can faintly see a 79 and then the 1/2., and should be an X after that.

On the spreadsheet, a 7" stationary Parker, it would be either a 5 1/2X or a 79 1/2X....to me I see a "79".

There is something that happened on the dynamic jaw, just behind the jaw. I see no crack or repair going down the full length of the jaw table so my guess is that had trouble replacing the jaw and tried welding into place??? :headscrat

Otherwise, nice little beasty, paid $140...biggest vise I hav to date at about 190-195 pounds and 7" jaw.

Wow! that Parker is awesome! In the last picture that weld you mentioned is pretty wide. I wonder if that ear behid the jaw insert broke off?:dunno: I would't think it would affect it being a good user though. Well done!

Congratulations! You get to add your own vise to the spreadsheet. It's either a 79-1/2 or 79-1/2X. The difference is how they mount to the bench. Use the attached scans for reference.

I commend you for starting the vise info thread and getting KMScott to maintain it.

FJ, thanks for the brochures, I haven't seen the brochure with the non "X" models.

Thanks also for the kind comments. Of course if Kevin had not taken over, it would have not been anywhere as complete as it is today and possibly just died off into the internet abyss. Kevin has really kept it going.

And then without the many contributions from many of the people on this thread, pics, info and all the brochures (especially from yourself for having many unseen before brochures), it is what makes it work.

From your brochures and this pic...
20180808_175811.jpg
...that I crouched down like someone looking for a mouse in a mouse hole, looks like mine is a 79 1/2.....no "X".

Thank you sir

I passed by a yard sale last Friday that advertised a 'tool sale'. Not seeing that as the headline very often, I was sure to stop. Looked like mostly antique hand tools and some random vintage type power tools.

I asked about hand tools like wrenches, sockets, ratchets and they said there were none to be had but they proceeded to lead me to the back of the garage. As an aside, there were some hand tools and I bought a large bin of sockets and ratchets for $10, but there on the bench was a 4" Columbian HDWE Co. vise. I asked how much... '$15, but you have to take it off'. :shocking:

Having just bought some wrenches and such, I had it off in moments and was on my way.

Looks like a NO 504 M. It's been used hard, but no cracks. Still has a bunch of living to do.

OK, sorry to inundate you all this morning with the classifieds but just below the add posted above I saw this one. And just think, another lifetime ago I lived not far from the area these adds are coming from. 😫-Josh

Check it out in person, if it is used but has no cracks or welds, then I would say it is reasonable. Not a "you ****" or easily flip it for twice the price, but a good deal.

I finally scared up a Craftsman 506-51800 while I was out Wednesday.

An antique store had it sitting in one of their booths for $25 and I was happy to see it sitting there. The swivel base has a small crack toward the back of it and I think I know what I am going to do to fix it.

Finished this craftsman today. What a mess it was. The tip of the horn was chipped and used some JB Weld to fill it in. I never used it before-it turned out okay. The vise looks better than what the pic looks like. Poor lighting, it is actually a light blue.

Picked this up on Friday. It's a Wilton 950. It's missing the little T bar handles for tightening the swivel operation. The jaws also need to be replaced as they are pretty worn (no serrated teeth left really).

I paid $75, not sure if that's a great deal, but I plan on keeping it anywho. I'd like to refurb it a little with some new paint.

That is a terrible deal, you need to ditch the vise asap. Just give me your address and since I only have a c-note on me, I will give $100 to take it off your hand. :lol_hitti

The missing swivel arm is no big deal. Even with the jaw inserts looking a bit tired, and assuming nothing major is wrong, you did very well

Greg, great score on the Wilton. As to the swivel locks, new ones are available from Kevin or Autopts, but if it were mine I'd get a box wrench that fits the hex and cut it down to about 4"- 5" long and store it facing the rear on one of the lock bolts. A 12 point wrench is a lot more convenient to use that a sliding tee bar. I have my Wilton C3 setup like that.

Chris and I both want to go to that sale. I live 70 miles closer than he does but the trip is not in the cards. :(

BTW, I assume they are all gone by now. Am I wrong?

Ok doing a little digging there seems to be a little speculation I've seen as to what this vise is... Can anyone here give me anymore info on this? It was free and I can't turn down free very often if ever HA.
