Well an unexpected result for today, considering I had only 3 planned stops. two paid off! And a red letter day for me, lately, ONLY TOOLS!

First stop I got an trigger start torch and 2 bottles of mapp gas ( I used one of these a couple months back and really liked it for certain work!) Unmarked Channel lock nut busters, a Proto 5200M (Metric?) socket rack, and two tap handles. both larger, adn one ratchets! this appears to use the sale ratchet mechanism the multi drivers use with that flip lever and "lock" as the middle position. this could be useful when retracting a tap! Tap marked TRW, the other is a General $15 All.

So that was the "early AM stop. A later stop was for a court block sale. decent turnout, only one was a good one. I went there, then went back as they mentioned selling "dads Tools" so I asked spout any anvils or vises, which got me invited into the garage! Free rein too! A bunch of industrial drawers (had to make sure not to pull too far out as most had the stops removed!)

So quite a ferw wrenches, both SAE & a few metric - Long C Craftsman, Proto, P&C, Williams, SK-Wayne Duro, Dunlap, the metric Craftsman & BMW.

attachment.php

When I went back I found the Craftsman box on top of those drawers open, and saw the 3/8 Breaker, then the bar for it, then pulled and realized it was more than a single tray it was a Craftsman socket box! tools were Long C originally, and Circle U, except for the sliding T handle which is BE. other stuff was mixed in metric Craftsman sockets, a 3/8 drive swivel for a 1/2" square, the two small sockets are SO.

attachment.php

The drivers and clamps (Williams Vulcan No 1) were some when I was getting the wrenches, some of the wrenches came from the drawers... all in all a good double haul!

The box logo fooled me I was not expecting the 50's oval, logo, so this had to have been a very early box. Too bad someone cut the notch in the one corner. I'm guessing they had a speeder that didn't fit? :dunno:

Second day of the estate sale was half off. Picked up a Dunlap plane, made by Millers Falls for them between 1949 and 1953, that is a No 5 size for $12.50, a newer Stanley plane for $12.50 and a Disston hand saw made before the late 1940s for $2.50. The planes cleaned up well and have not seen too much use. Also got to see a 1922 Model T truck that the owner drives to a lot of local sales.d2292cc5dfdb5945b6acbc093319126b.jpg101302ac1aac8d311eb22714f1a4b7e8.jpg88f3aa96f84312de6992aa176a765359.jpg0a805715ef8ab970724f00961fb001f3.jpg524481cbb3c5f7ae370b6fd78d121338.jpg62eb3633fc791c800889079bf3abc9d6.jpg

Not much action today! I picked up 2 more Craftsman gray with red drawers bottom cabinets. Both are 1972, one is 5 drawers and storage compartment, the other is the 9 drawer lower (5 full width drawers and 4 half width drawers). Pics tomorrow, it started raining so I hit all the antique stores and a few bars too!

Where/how do you determine the specific year of manufacture? I have a couple few of the lowers and uppers of that style and have yet to find mfr date stamps anywhere.

The machinist parallels set was $5, the Purdy brush was $3 but everything else was $1 or less including the Proto torque wrench:

P1090613.jpg

Stihl 026 Pro project saw for $5. Like new but someone started to replace the top end. There's nothing wrong with the original piston/cylinder but I did find the impulse line loose.

P1090610.jpg

I picked up the Baldor 1HP 1725 RPM motor a few days ago for $5 and rebuilt it. All it needs now is a start cap which is on order.

P1090612.jpg

Various alum. and brass project metal and 50 lbs of lead shot for $20:

Vintage Hickok tube tester, full tube caddy and a Seeburg Jukebox wall mount selector.

Very sparse day at the Tahoe flea today. Only found a 1942 Mess Kit and a sliding square ruler. My neighbor and I then hit some garage sales and found a few more items. In the Ammo box were a pretty nice set of 1/2” drive Thorsen sockets and ratchet along with a Proto 1” socket.

My daughter and I went west to a Spartan Super obstacle course race this morning in Barre, Mass and stopped at an estate sale along the way. She was shopping for kitchen stuff and I for tools. Down in the basement workshop, i found the cool, vintage Swingline stapler kit, complete with a cherry red #800 tacker and several boxes of vintage staples. Check out the condition of the metal box, especially the inside! The box was marked at $25 but I talked him down to $13. The Speedial Mark II variac was marked at $1 :bounce: !
My daughter found a small crock pot for $10, a tray of silverware for $10, a small Pyrex measuring cup for $1 and a small whiteboard for $1.

At checkout, I talked the lady into throwing the $1 items in for free, so we paid $33 for everything.dce038bd9b3a60afd4fec02bb847ca49.jpgc200d5094d05d2bfefd6c449f4b85423.jpgffda7eb9d59030fab7c0e0cf78d01855.jpgbaa589ac58f1d79e612dea27b590fbcb.jpgca6e08adea7bfc25f86c4f6a18856d13.jpg

BB I have that same stapler (bought new ages ago, but without the box). I keep it in my range box for stapling targets up (when allowed. most ranges these days insist on tapeing them up...)

Small update - was too busy at work...

1. Aluminum tool box - found by a neighbor at a recycling pile (he sometimes brings me his finds knowing ) - FREE

2. Skil Saw and drill set (needs new batteries and possibly a charger for the drill (neighbor who owned it will look for it) - FREE

3. SK metric set, missing 13mm and extension; $16. (put it Taiwan 13mm till I find another one from this set)
Please tell me if you know how old is this one - I suspect very recent...

Nice finds everyone. Several stops today with no results. Found a pair of Snap On "water pump" pliers (I can't call them Channel Locks can I), a Blue Point tap 1/2 x 13 and a small pair of Craftsman tin snips all for a buck.

Three dollars apiece. I’m getting a tool box set up for our daughter’s new house. I couldnt pass up the 4” Craftsman. Useless but they look so cool.

Lady offered $5 for the bunch, turned her down. She’s selling her son’s tools, he passed from cancer earlier this summer.

I carry one everyday. Use it quite a bit. Up to 9/16/14MM its fine for many things. Would I wrench with it on a car? No. But not everything requires a full set of tools.

Is it just me or is it amazing these trucks (and cars) are right around 100 years old, still run, you can still get most of the parts and are cool as heck. Love the sun burned headlamps.

I find these neglected in the bottom of rusted out tool boxes with some regularity, but I don’t know what they are. Awls? Why no handle? Compass points? For what?

Edit: I think they are “movable points” for extension dividers. The somewhat different tapers may indicate different manufaturers, or maybe the thickness is not a critical dimension for the holders. Now to find some extension dividers.

Today Mrs LesserSon and I headed south to Coopersburg to see if the Lions Club flea market was running in the rain. (Today was the rain date for the event that was rained out last week.) It wasn’t. So we tried a new (to us) place for breakfast, and headed farther south the Quakertown flea market. One pickup selling sweetcorn beets cabbage etc. A few other venders swapping tales under the roofed spots. Not much.
Headedback to our own neighborhood garage sales. $1.60 bought a photo frame, drawer organizer and bottle opener. Sigh. August here in eastern PA has gone from rain every day to rain every weekend. Wish we could redirect some of it to the wildfire areas in the West. Seems a landslide on the turnpike and flash flooding on six miles of 309 had effectively closed the route we were on earlier today!

Yeah you're right, I had one on the keychain for the work truck for years. If I had the truck, hence the keys, I always had other tools.

This one will go to the daughters house.

Oh, and it's a circle Y.

Outlaw, I have a question a little off topic about those c-clamps. Do you know if it's possible to find and install the missing hold-downs on the end of the threaded part of the c-clamp? I've never seen or heard anyone doing that and I've always wonder if it can be done. :headscrat

Correct! very SMALL Bridge clamps, but there they are...

On clamps missing the pad and have a ball on the end, there are replacements available from places like McMaster, or Grainger for the larger sizes. not sure how small they get for those...

Here's one of the Craftsman cabinets I picked up Friday after some cleanup. This will replace a similar 3 drawer cabinet giving me more storage without taking up extra room in the shop.

I wonder where all the missing clamp pads go?

Probably the same place as the little dies from tube flaring kits and the tool rests from bench grinders.

red Vise. this came up I think last year. That box is aluminum right? I have one somewhat similar, but not all full width drawers. I wish Lugz was here, as he had info on those.

Why do they call it a bridge clamp? is it as simple as it sounds? holding structural steel together while you mash rivets?

Fowldarr, those crown logo clamps are nice-looking. I have a later set I bought new in the eighties. I hesitate to say more, but since I doubt you overspent on them, if you intend to use them, I have some advice: get a set of Stanleys. Considering the similarity of material (and, I assume, production cost), there are some surprising differences.
With the Craftsman, there’s frustrating tendency of the screw to wander off perpendicular, which make the ends of wood difficult to align. In the similar Stanley ones, the end of the screw is captive and the pad rides in a track. In addition to making the wood alignment easier, that keeps the external dimensions of the clamp constant. Each of the Stanleys have two additional features cast in: holes for screwing them to a base (keeping project in a plane) and a relief for sawing the ends of the wood without marring the clamp.

red Vise. this came up I think last year. That box is aluminum right? I have one somewhat similar, but not all full width drawers. I wish Lugz was here, as he had info on those.

I assume (!) that RedVise's silver box is painted steel (note the rust on the "garage door"). Makes me think of a military armorer's tool kit, but I'm uncertain of what era it's from.

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=6900468 is where Lugz posted his box in the Vintage Toolbox thread. Note the discussion carries over onto the next page, as well.

I paid $2 for them, so I wouldn’t say I overpaid, but I can see what you’re referring to. I’ll keep my eyes open for the Stanley’s

I stopped at an estate sale yesterday and picked up a few things including a box of padlocks and keys. None of them were matched and I wound up throwing out ten of the locks, but Four of the monster super locks were keyed alike and one key was in there for them. There were also a few other master locks that worked and some lockout tagout locks. Total for the box was $10

Thanks !
My box is slightly different,no embossing on front panel, no tab for lock chain on top and the side handles are different.
I expect my box is an armorer's tool kit also.

They wanted a dollar, I gave them four bucks for this and six cans of fuel.
I wasn't exactly sure if it worked or what it costs new.

I know now.
No real use for it, it's up for trade.

Backpacking stoves can be handy if power goes out and you need to cook, and can't light a fire. However, the green suitcase style Coleman stoves are better for this as they are more stable and have an extra burner.

I was always preferential to liquid fuel backpacking stoves, especially the multifuel models that will basically run on any flammable liquid. Near society? White gas, unleaded, diesel, or kerosene. Near an airfield? Jet fuel will work as well. And you can count on unleaded and diesel being available just about anywhere, however unleaded 87 octane burns on the dirty side, if you use it I'd highly recommend a pot with a snug fitting lid, petrochemical soot a poor substitute for black pepper and all.

white gas is basically super refined unleaded. with the canister types you better bring enough or there had better be a camping store along your route, otherwise fire it is.. Not gonna find them in the old general store down in the holler.

however even a peasant like me knows that specialist camping gear is never cheap (typed this while fondling my Snow Peak titanium spork), and at $4 I don't think you got taken too badly. You ****...not monumental amounts, but the suckage is there.

I had a pretty good flea market day. Paid a dollar each for a plomb 3/8" speeder, a plomb 13/16" wrench, and the SK 1/2" breaker bar.
I paid up for the Craftsman circle h set, but I think it was worth 40 bucks. It's complete with all the 1/2" and 3/8" pieces except for a 1/2" drive 5/8 socket and the speeders. Needs a handle too.

Is it just me or is it amazing these trucks (and cars) are right around 100 years old, still run, you can still get most of the parts and are cool as heck. Love the sun burned headlamps.
Sure is, it ran great, but I didn't have my out and missed taking a video of it going down the road..
