One thing to keep in mind with Gearwrench vs everyone else. They basically offer no warranty. You can pay to mail it back and if they decide, you might get a new one.

For that reason I'd recommend almost anyone else.

That said deals wise, check Sears frequently as they offer Gearwrench and allow you to use points to bring the cost down, see the Sears Deal thread.

Some years ago I broke one of my Gearwrench wrenches. I simply took it back to Menards where they promptly exchanged it for a new one. No questions asked. Pretty simple.

I've seen guys exchange the tools @ Advance Auto a couple of times. The only problem I would expect it how many singles a place may stock. I doubt they would want to break up the full sets.

I've always swapped mine out at Advance Auto, no issues....maybe even easier than Craftsman replacements.

I like many GearWrench brand tools, hard to beat their made in Taiwan ratchets and chrome sockets for the price. I personally don't care for GearWrench screwdrivers or pliers. Knipex pliers and Wiha screwdrivers are my personal favorites.

For impact sockets I generally go with made in Taiwan Sunex or Grey Pneumatic. Though I do own quite a few GearWrench brand impact sockets I try to avoid made in communist China products when possible for political reasons, but sometimes, due to cost and availability, that doesn't happen.

I haven't broken many tools over the past 50+ years I've wrenched both professionally and at home. Those I broke, except for one, were broken from abuse. The one that failed with no abuse was a Snap-On flex ratchet - Snap-On wouldn't replace it because they no longer made that particular model. It was the last Snap-On tool I have bought.

I've had a few GearWrench tools that were defective when I received them and so far the place of purchase has always replaced them at no charge.

I have extras of most everything I normally use, if a tool that cost less than $20 to replace should break under normal use I doubt if I'd warranty it. :dunno: If breakage with no abuse was common in any brand I'd switch brands, at least for that particular tool type, and would definitely not bother with the warranty.

Ratchet repair kits for GearWrench ratchets aren't expensive so I'd just put a kit in one rather than messing with the warranty.

If there was a company that replaced lost tools (with a receipt) I could have had quite a few replaced over the years. More than enough to make a warranty worthwhile to me.

As always, YMMV.

Please participate, I am hoping this thread takes off as i really like gearwrench for the money, here are a couple examples.

Gear Wrench 7-Piece Stubby Wrench Set, Metric $19.99
Gear Wrench 7-Piece Stubby Wrench Set, SAE $19.99

I was going to say that you already have half your money towards this 32 pc set if you are looking at those, but you get 1 more of each size stubby in your links. Though your SAE set contains 11/16" & 3/4", but does not have the 5/16" the set on Sears has. So either way, you will need to grab a single or 2 to complete the set.

which ratchet comes with this kit?

According to GW site, the 80708 set comes with their 84 Tooth teardrop Ratchet.

http://www.gearwrench.com/gearwrench-80708-18-pc-1-2-drive-metric-socket-set.html

The model # for the ratchet itself is: 81304F, which the ratchet itself typically sells for more than the cost of this kits current sale price.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009OCB2V6/?tag=atomicindus08-20

This seems like a very great deal, I went ahead and purchased this kit, it is supposed to be delivered tomorrow, I'll report back if there are any issues.

this is a deal that comes around regularly, but not often:

Mechanics Tool Set 13 pc. 3/4 In. Drive 12 Point SAE

a quality 3/4" drive set (sockets, one extension, and a reasonable ratchet, all in a metal box) for 99$ shipped is a deal.

https://www.acmetools.com/shop/tools/gearwrench-80879

Quality ratchet, it's a whole lot better than the Harbor Freight 3/4" drive ratchet.

A little more than last year from northern, adding below for the accessory part numbers. That 36" handle is sweet, nice to be able to easily switch to the 36" long handle. No idea if the links are still current but the item numbers are.

GearWrench Mechanics Tool Set — 13-Pc., 3/4in. Drive, 12-Point, Model# 80879

http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200675252_200675252

i bought this for my son last christmas. it is a great quality starter kit. if you decide to pull the trigger, save 10$ (either as a gift card or off the purchase) by using one of the coupons here:

https://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/promotions_coupon-codes

i have bought from them before, they do alright . . . .

Thanks.

Made in Taiwan.

For those who need, think they need or just want to have 3/4 drive tools handy just in case.

Already have the 3/4 drive sockets that I need, pretty much will just be used on some rear axle nuts and every now and then a trailer hitch ball.

I already own 38" TEKTON 15359 and 19" GearWrench 81404 3/4" drive breaker bars that seldom get used, breaking a 1/2" drive breaker bar while busting loose axle nuts can be a memorable experience.

IMO it's better to have a tool and not need it than to need a tool and not have it.

The 3/4" ratchet, has to be better than the one that comes in the HF kit carbon steel set that I looked at a few years ago. https://www.harborfreight.com/20-piece-metric-3-4-quarter-inch-heavy-duty-socket-set-5494.html

I really just wanted the ratchet and extension - the box and the 11 sockets pretty much just cost me an additional $15.

$89.99 less $10 off code 254879 plus $14.99, to my zip code, shipping came to $89.98 total.

Contains the GearWrench 81400 Ratcheting Socket 3/4" Drive Teardrop Quick Release 19-3/4" sells for $66.02 plus $7.99 shipping at www.jbtoolsales.com/gearwrench-81400-ratcheting-socket-3-4-drive-teardrop-quick-release-19-3-4/

You can (not included in the Northern Tool deal) get a longer handle 36" Knurled Chrome Replacement Handle for 3/4" Drive Ratchet Heads for the ratchet, www.jbtoolsales.com/gearwrench-81403-36-knurled-handle-22mm-thick/ $48.61 plus shipping, $44.99 with free shipping from CPO Tyler tools.

Gearwrench 3/4" Drive Ratchet Repair Kit 81499 (1 KIT) $11.30 plus shipping from Cripe through www.bonanza.com/listings/Gearwrench-3-4-Drive-Ratchet-Repair-Kit-81499-1-KIT-/268490819

sadly, those discounts are gone.

Like I wrote, I only quoted that old post for the item numbers.

50$ for a piece of steel seemed excessive.

But it's about 6 lbs of chromed plated chrome vanadium steel and since I'm a tool ***** and actually use it on occasion I think it was a worthwhile ~$50 purchase for me. :) YMMV

That's about what chrome vanadium 3/4" drive 38" long breaker bars sell for when not on sale. I don't think that 36" long ratchet handles move off the shelf very fast so I don't see them being offered at sale prices often if at all. Snap-On sells their 36" handle for their 3/4" L872 ratchet head for only $120.

Gearwrench 81403 36" Knurled Handle (22mm thick) $48.61, free shipping on orders over $99 from JB Tools.

I actually like not having to slide hunks of pipe over handles like I did for 50+ years. Any tool that's not needed, wanted or used probably wasn't worth the purchase price. I've stored, given away, thrown away many tools that I shouldn't have bothered buying over the years. Spending $50 on a tool I use isn't that big of a deal to me even though in this instance a hunk of pipe would suffice.

Excessively priced for some doesn't mean it's not a useful worthwhile purchase for others. Some consider Westling socket trays to be excessively priced especially compared with the price of Harbor Fright socket organizers but I just placed my second order at Westling. The Westlings work out great in my Harbor Fright tool boxes and cart.

Everyone has to consider their personal needs, wants and tool budget when buying any tool.

Seems that I can never own enough tools, when it comes down to the bottom line I'd much rather own a tool I don't need than to need a tool I don't own.

That $20 off was an offer only for you, not everyone will have that. Most offers lately haven't been as good as in the past.

That's exactly what they are. A surprise if you get them. The best offer I've had lately was $10 off $40. So as far as Sears deals, most leave freecash or surprise points out of the info, unless it is guaranteed everyone has access to it

For those wondering about the deal linked on the first page, it indeed came with an 84T ratchet, and I didn't even realize it came with a 15" extension when I clicked order, guess I looked over that, but thats a decent chunk of change alone!

Best to buy when you see a deal, prices of deals at amazon generally jump up after one or a few have been sold. If you snooze you lose definitely applies at amazon.

Not trying to be a jerk but IMO sometimes leaving the pics in quoted posts makes sense but often deleting them makes it easier to scroll through threads.

Just my 2¢, not trying to start a discussion and I'm hoping my comment didn't offend you. :)

this a good deal or just average/something they have going on all the time?

the page does say "while supplies last", so while it might not be a new deal, it might disappear tomorrow. as to the value . . . .

these kinds of posts make me wonder. i understand, and appreciate, posts that list the item for a better price elsewhere. it shows you noticed it, and while you didnt point it out at the time, you did share it with others when you realized that you knew of a better deal than someone else did.

someone went out of his way to share a deal. if you know of a better one, speak up. if you think it is a great deal, well, speak up or not, i suppose. but "is this really a deal" without any supporting "work" on your part isn't really productive. it is, in effect, asking the person sharing the deal to invest work to "prove" it is, in fact, a reasonable deal.

why would they want to do that? why would the community want them to do that, as opposed to digging up more deals?

i am not interested in getting into an argument about this. you'll notice i removed the attribution from the quote. it is easy to read these kinds of threads, and benefit from them. what is not easy is going to the effort to post deals in the first place. for their own reasons, some people do. it seems respectful to provide them with assistance, not to ask them to justify their deal post.

amazon: 3/8" drive GearWrench 81264 84T Full Polish Long Handle Ratchet, 11 inch $25.99 Ships from and sold by Amazon.com

i thought i would mention that this deal is still available. CPO has gone back to to the mid 30$ range.

and, since i have you interrupted, i bought one of those gearwrench 36" 3/4" drive ratchet handles discussed earlier. found someone on ebay selling new ones for 42$ shipped, and pulled the trigger with the last 15% off deal, so i ended up all in for about 36$. all i can say is that it is pretty massive and well made. certainly worth the 36$, and likely worth the 42$. . . . . . it certainly introduces a whole new world with the 3/4" sockets. the longest ratchet i had before was about 24".
