Upgrading neighbor’s generator...

I’ve got a sweet lady who’s husband passed recently. He served as a pilot for the Flying Tigers and if you know history, it was owned by the CIA!) Anyway, she wants to make a few changes so she wouldn’t have to worry about some things around the home and I’m helping her out.

She has a 8000 watt Generac generator and I’m not sure what’s the value she can sell this for. The $ will go towards an automatic standby generator by the same company, Generac. What’s a fair price for this generator? It’s well maintained.

Outside of a disaster, a few hundred. Check local Craigslist. During a hurricane/ice storm/fire, probably double to triple that

Where are you located? That has a pretty sizable factor. Check CL in your area.

$500~600 depending on condition. I'm about to put up a 7500/8125 Champion that we have and will be asking $600 for it. I'd ask $650 but TSC sells a similar Champ for $700 new.

I did. (Spokane, WA) and haven’t seen much in comparison with other available generators in the 8K range. I’m thinking of hitting it at $600 when the first dark clouds rolls over the area. No sense trying to sell umbrellas in the summer or swim suits in the winter.

make sure you are competitive with local stores as well...$600 for a used generator, outside of a disaster seems high, even in my high COL area. For that much, I'll spend a couple hundred more to get a brand new one, especially with Harbor Freight so close.

Yup, especially to the everyday consumer.

Harbor freight sells legitimately good generators and with one from them, i'd at least have some sort of return policy and warranty. A used one on CL has none of that

I’ve never was confident in Chinese made motors. Perhaps I’m missing out on the fact that they’ve become more reliable?

In any case, either I’ll buy this from her or a friend will. I still get a kick out of how smooth it runs. Something about older machines that are well built.

That’s a Briggs & Stratton, not horrible but not high end either. Generic has had their own line(s) and also purchased PowrGard (Baldor) which were nicer.

I’d say 350-400 all day. I have a Briggs and a HF and I’ve been using the HF whenever the power goes out.
