I totally forgot about yours! Maybe it's time to start tracking dates & logos.

I've got one that was my father-in-law's, dated '58 also, but it's a three drawer with the locking panel. It's what got me started chasing down these old tool boxes and now I'm hooked.

I like how the top big drawer is on the side and not in the middle like most are.

That is in about as good a condition as my Craftsman version has when I scored it!

I spotted this Snap On tool cabinet at an antique mall in north central WI yesterday. This was mixed in with a bunch of other vintage auto items from old gas pumps and procelain signs, to oil cans and tools. Very cool cabinet, but the $495 price tag was a bit too pricey for me.

That’s a pretty cool box, the handles are great and the wear on the drawers from a hand are really showing how many hours that box was used....if it could speak...the wood truck is neat too, judging from the cab design of the truck would guess mid-seventies?

Disney needs to make a movie and name it “Toolboxes”...haha.

I bought the wood truck clock from a lady, She said 1970’s so your spot on. The truck looks like a USPS truck. Her great uncle (the dealer) gave the clock to her when he passed away.

You should preserve that wood with something and save it. Old guy Mac dealer 25 years ago had a truck like that, snap-on dealer used to tell me “quit buying tools from that old man so he can retire and go fishing “. Sure Willie Hughes is gone now but he was a good guy. Still have the same box I bought from him in ‘86-87.

Here's my late father-in-law’s old, late-60’s to early-70’s Craftsman 6500 Tool Box. She cleaned up real nice!

Question for the vintage tool box crowd need a drawer pull for one of my remline boxes and one for my vintage powercraft box. Is there a repop source for these or am i looking for a unicorn. Thinking about going with Redline vintage drawer pulls if i cant find original matching ones.

I find stuff like missing trays and drawers. Sometimes I look for years. Eventually stuff turns up. Also helps to pick up parts boxes even if you don't need them, because someday you will!

I brought home this 1974 dated Snap-On KRA 429A mid box this weekend. No key but for just $30, I couldn't leave it behind.
No SnapOn badge on the front, and I don't think the seller knew what it was. :shocking:

Finally got a chance to take a good picture of my vintage Mac tool boxes. I've owned the top and bottom boxes about 25 years that I found at a flea market for $150. I added the middle box from a pawn shop and the small matching 6 drawer side box from ebay. The tiny single drawer box at the same flea market for $7.
Owning several different modern boxes over my lifetime I have come to realize the older boxes are just made to last. These drawers glide in and out easily even loaded.

I just bought this Snap On box last weekend for $60. It was dusty and neglected. I cleaned it up and lubed the original slides. Oh and I found the drawer slide tool inside mixed with the miscellaneous bolts that came in the box. This will replace my Kobalt 26" "Road Box" that the roller slides disintegrated after 5 years. This one is way heavier. Hopefully it will work for me and last many years.
I re-lined the near mint drawers with new liner material I found at Home depot. It is a vinyl floor runner with a diamond plate pattern.

Try Eric Costa - ecosta777@gmail . He makes the chevron Craftsman badges reproduction for the grey/red boxes. He might could do the Little Mechanic man handles, Love that RemLine logo.

I'm always amazed at the prices paid for used Snap-On boxes in other parts of the country...I've been watching the local Craigslist for a similar box, that one would be listed for $500 here.

Stuart, you just have to keep watching and eventually something will come at the right price. I got a KRA 58B for $25 and KR66 for $40. The rest are listed for much higher prices. Missed a KR 53(3 drawer) on yard sale for $20 (some guy ran for it first).
Just be careful with CL - a lot of strange people there...
if prices are that high in your area - look for yard sales, flee markets or resellers who are not into tools. I have gotten a Snap On 250B missing a handle for $9 from a reseller (I wonder what he paid as he obviously had to make a profit). In my limited experience best deals are posted on Wednesday’s or Thursdays for some reason...
But it’s random - I can not find KRA 352 for more than 1 year. Missed a Herbrand bottom box ( Damn it...) because guy was acting weird, refused to meet in public, lived in a bad hood, answered messages at will and plainly disappeared when I had a friend to watch my back 2 weeks ago...
I hope somebody from GJ got it...( I made a post trying to get info on it. Guy sold on only 3 days ago...)

Here’s my trio of 1956 Snappy’s. I would love to keep and restore them but sadly they are too small and too much for me to sink into. I have on friend that does powdercoat work and another that does paintless dent repair but I’d just rather sell them than throwing good money after bad.

I'm always amazed at the prices paid for used Snap-On boxes in other parts of the country...I've been watching the local Craigslist for a similar box, that one would be listed for $500 here.

I found the ad listed as " 3 tool boxes " $75 ea with a very obscure, out of focus picture. The two other boxes were newer Craftsman boxes. They were located 45 minutes away. I asked for better pictures of this box and once I saw the Snap On nameplate, I made and appointment to go see the "boxes". Sure enough, weirdos at a trailer house with stuff spewed all over the yard. Offered $60 for making the long drive. Loaded it up and got out.

Here’s a 24” Craftsman 65141 that I got for $4 at an estate sale. It had areas of moderate rust and was starting to pit on the bottom, so I cleaned it up and repainted it.

Thanks guys. I didn’t include pics of the primer coats. After an initial scrub down with brushes and Simple Green, I used an orbital sander and drill with wire wheels to get the bulk of the rust off, then gave it an over night soak in Evaporust. I applied plenty of primer and enamel coats especially to the inner areas that will hold the tools, as I want it to be a long term functional box.

It weighs 20.2 lbs empty; I can’t image what it will weight full of tools.

The inner tray paint initially wrinkled because I made a rookie mistake of applying a coat of Rustoleum over an initial coat of Krylon Colormaster Paint + Primer without waiting long enough between coats. I don’t recommend the Krylon paint because it required an entire “tall boy” 15oz can just to cover the inner tray and the color still looked anemic and watered down. All of the Rustoleum worked well and their colors were rich.

I was most impressed with Rustoleum Hammered paint on the hardware. We’ll see how it will all hold up with heavy use. I like the patina on old boxes and would have kept the box as is (with a clear coat) but ultimately felt the new paint would protect it better from future rust. Also, the traditional Craftsman Red color appears to fade with time into a cool looking shade of red-orange, which prompted me to consider pure orange for the new color.

It was a worthwhile, fun little project.

When my neighbor and I went to a local garage sale recently there was a smaller brown Kennedy cantilever toolbox available. Due to the fact that I have a weakness for those, I encouraged my neighbor to grab it because I have reached my (and my wife’s) limit on cantilever toolboxes. He ended up paying $5.00 for it and I offered to clean it up a bit. It had some rusty ares but overall it came out pretty well.
The last two shots demonstrate the depth of my cantilever problem!
