EDC pen recomendation from owners

I have to wear a safety vest at work and now ready to take the $30+ plunge and buy a good EDC pen. My only requirements are that it has a badd *** clip (super thin vest pocket material) and that it can take a Fisher pen refill.

Unfortunately Parker Jotters have the weakest non replaceable pen clip.

I have the old style space pen, don't really care for having to remove the top.
I got a tactical $4 pen from china a while back, very good build but I can't see it being comfortable for using for a long time.
I broke out 3 Zebra pens because I used to strip them down completely and back together several times a day whenever I was bored.

I would say this is the best because the cost, not being to bulky and being a fisher click pen.

Mike Rowe did a special with the Pen Company of America a while ago. They are the only company still manufacturing pens in USA, IIRC. They are the twist type, not the clicker type. Not sure if the clip would be strong enough for you.

I love my Pilot G2 gel pens. I prefer the extra fine point - 0.38mm. I have red, blue, green, purple, and black. I use a different color for each day of the week. It helps me keep track of when I did things or when I took notes. The shirts I wear for work are pretty thin material and the clips hold them into my pocket. They might work for you.

I've always thought SOG was kinda junky compared to leatherman, but that tool sure is interesting.

Ive given up on trying to carry around ONE pen.. I’m too busy, too many things going on, and they just get lost.. id rather buy a box of disposable ones, have 20 in the truck, and who cares if it gets left behind. I have enough things to worry about besides my pen.

That said, i have a couple tactical ones that are basically indestructible and cheap as hell.

$3.50 - and you can run it over with a car.. its a twist action so no caps to mess with. Replaceable inks if that matters.. available in a few different colors and you’ll see them sold for up to $20 in some places..

+1 on this. Most of my pens disappear because of other people’s sticky fingers when I host safety trainings, you have to send one around with the roster but it usually doesn’t make it back. I’m now buying boxes of the Bic click pens off Amazon at 20 for $6 or so. I was buying the Pilot G2 pens in green so I could spot them in tech’s pockets later and ask for them back, but that was more effort than it was worth to embarrass someone over stealing a pen.

I do have a couple of the write in the rain pens that have held up well over the years.

Just my opinion - but spending big money on a pen is like an office thing, or an executive thing, when THATS your “tool”.. i dont think its a good thing for a guy in the field or someone doing labor - especially if its not in a workshop you never leave - and especially if you use it a lot. i tired it, and for me, its just going out of your way to make things harder on yourself. One more unnecessary thing to have to worry about. I wanna make things easier, this is the opposite. But thats just for me..

If its an EDC thing - as in - I’m gonna carry it around so i have a pen in the rare case i actually need one, and it hardly gets used so you can easily keep hold of the thing, thats something else entirely.

I knew I would **** myself into this.. so I just bought the Fisher Matte Black Cap o Matic Space Pen.. $12 shipped on Amazon Prime.. it's s nice pen... Nice and slim, nice finish, writes smooth, and I especially like the clicker top.. pretty solid clip too

You won't pick it up and think it's a $60 pen... But it's nice.. I'll loose it no doubt, so $12 won't hurt for a temporary toy. And of course I added the $3 black rite in the rain pad to go with it ..

I love these. I have I've in my uniform at all times and they have held up to some serious abuse. Heck, I bruised/ dislocated a rib, but the pen was fine. I did manage to dent one, but it functioned perfect.

Eventually I got tired of my nice pens getting lost, damaged, stolen, "borrowed", or contaminated and went to "disposable-ish" options.

I usually carried a Pilot Precise V7 (available in a metal retractable or plastic with a cap). A couple of bucks each, nice feel, and if it got contaminated or damaged I could toss it without feeling too much regret, just a minor sting.

As far as a really cheap pen that works well, the plastic Bic Retractable (I don't think it really has a fancier name) can be had for under 30 cents each retail. It's the most common giveaway promotional pen, too, so you probably already have a few of these lying around.

When I worked at a credit union, we ordered about 30,000 of these every year and gave them away freely. They ended up pretty much everywhere in town.

I used to use nice fountain pens a lot (when I wrote a lot). I NEVER had one I handed to someone fail to come back. Just don't let go of the cap (that's not an option with a clicker though).

Is there a reason you're set on Fischer refills? Is it their write on any surface ability, or the upside down smooth feeding, or just the fact that you can reliably know you're getting something consistently the same? I ask, because I've found the Unibal Jetstream hybrid-gel inks to be better in most circumstances, though they cannot write upside-down (a Tombow Airpress can though).

I have a Fisher Space pen that rolled off the top of my ladder while it was open and landed on the lid. It ended up wedging itself on there so tight that I wouldn’t be able to get it off without crushing the pen.

Now I use a Rite in the Rain orange clicker pen. In the event I lose it, I’ll replace with another because it works so well.

I also carry a Zebra F-701. I did the normal mods and swapped over the metal parts from a Zebra F-402 so it's all metal. But as others have said they've finally come out with an all metal model so you don't have to mod them anymore. And it will accept a fisher refill you just have to remove the plastic piece inside the tip.

I use this same one at work. Funny that once I switched from their black one to the orange one I stopped losing as many.

Most of the pens in my work pickup tool box and desk are 'acquired' from the office supply closet but the orange RITR rides in my clipboard thingy.
