I am currently in the middle of having an addition built at my house which extends the kitchen and family room. I need to extend my kitchen sink and DW supply and drain lines about 7 feet. I also need to run a new LP line for a stove top and fireplace for about 40’ of pipe.

Is there anyone licensed in this area that can assist with this project?

Shouldn’t one expect materials cost+ hourly rate cost + reasonable mark up?

Reasonable is subjective. Only way you can know if their pricing is good is if you get multiple quotes from multiple local plumbers

In this particular project if it wasn’t for the plumber’s license requirement I could finish it in less than 10 hours and about $300 in materials. I got one quote for $1100 in materials and what amounts to $300/hr

No it doesn't.

That pays for the truck, the labor to bill, insurance, the license, expertise, warranty, on and on. If you can't appreciatr that, you'll never be happy with a quote

If the work is that easy and can bill that much, maybe you should go get a plumbing license. Should be easy, right?

As I said- I understand overhead but I was quoted 30 hours for the job - it is definitely not 30 hours worth of work. Total quote was over $4600. If the other quotes come in that high than I won’t have a choice but $4600 seems insane.

By comparison- I am having 2 septic dry wells done by a major licensed local septic company. The dry wells are 30’ deep and 6’ feet in diameter. 3 days of work, heavy machinery, distribution box. Total cost is $7500. They also have insurance costs, manpower and will be on property for an extended period.

It may be a 10 hr job, but when the plumber comes out he will have a helper and now you are talking 20 hrs labor. They will bill what they can get away with.

If the helper is worth a damn, they should be done in about 5 hours. Math is pretty simple.

Note to self:

NEVER buy/live in a jurisdiction that prohibits an owner from doing their own anything....

except maybe mortuary. ;)

I hear you- a few of the counties around here only require that the work pass inspection. I know how to do most of the work in my addition or know tradesman licensed in other counties who would do it- unfortunately the licensing here is at the county level so one licensed in another Maryland county needs to pull a permit for the work. So even though I have a building permit for the addition, electrical and plumbing each require another permit.
