I was hoping to put a urinal inside and drain through the wall of the shop. I have water lines run into my garage. I will be able to set up a system to flush. I have already began to dig the ditch to drain into. I have seen several posters suggest a perpherated barrel filled with gravel inside. Is there a benefit to the barrel instead of just filling the entire hole with pea gravel? I live in New York state. So I'll probably use washer fluid to flush in the winter. Any thing that I need to think of here that I have not?

Easy...here's my urinal.(the "old" way was killing the grass and I think the neighbors appreciate it more)

Typically I just grab a jar or a bottle or something out of the trash and toss the contents outside when I'm done.

I have installed the urinal and have also added a sink. I dug a ditch about 4 feet diameter and about 40 inches deep. I intend to fill with gravel after the drains are in. I have a few questions.
1. Would it be best to tie the sink into the same line as the urinal? Better to have drain above ground onto the gravel?
2. Would it be a good idea to put lime in the ditch before I fill with gravel to reduce the odor acidity?
3. Is it best to have terminal end at the deepest point of the ditch? Should I flare out the terminal end in different directions? Should i drill holes in the line inside the ditch to dissipate at different heights of the ditch.?

The ultimate goal is reduce or eliminate any odors. I have a privacy fence on 2 sides of the ditch and the garage on the third. I think that this will help. Any other tips appreciated. Thanks!

Lime in the ditch will not help. Lime is alkaline as is urine. Line was used in outhouses because true lime reacts chemically with moisture and makes heat, which helps to neutralize problems with feces. The lime becomes consumed quickly. Don't put it in the ditch.

One could try putting the urinal drain pipe exit towards the bottom of the ditch, which would help isolate the ammonia smell of urine and let grass spread and grow on top of the gravel to help absorb some of the resulting smell. If it smells too bad, make the ditch longer.

My garage urinal is pretty simple.

I used a yellow (seems fitting) drain pan from the auto store and screwed it to the back wall of the garage with the drain spout facing down.

I used a bit of rubber pipe connector and some PVC adapters to connect the spout to PVC pipe.

The pipe exits the garage through the wall at roughly a 45 degree angle. Another 45 fitting right outside sends the pipe straight down. It is painted to match the house so not really visible.

That pipe simply exits in the corrugated underground gutter drains pipe. So it is eventually "flushed" when we get some rain.

I've never noticed any real smell with this setup. No issues with freezing. Works well with occasional use.

That user made one post, 2 and a half years ago, and hasn't logged in since. I think your chances of getting a reply are slim to none, and slim's left town :lol_hitti

I didn't get back because I could not find the web page. Too bad you didn't have an answer instead of a slam and ******* me off, so to speak.

Can you sketch this out to ensure we understand the system? Did you find the issue?

Sorry I never got back to you. Could not find this forum. Somehow today I found it while doing a google search.

As for a sketch, I don't have one, or think it is necessary. Just a urinal (same as using a funnel) in the garage, attached to 1 inch hose that goes through the wall to the outside, where I had it going into an empty 5 gallon pail that I put many holes into for drainage, with the lid on it, buried 3 feet below grade. After I dug it up because of not draining, I tried pouring a bucket of water into the ground and it just sat there. Even the bucket still had urine it. Somehow the ground is not draining anymore.

I would pipe it directly to a gravel area in the ground.
A trap will keep the stink from the leach area at bay, but the trap will be full of piss so it will stink.
Use a trap and keep a jug of water next to it so you can dump some down after taking a leak.
It will freeze in the winter. You could put in some windshield washer stuff in the trap. Straight piss might not freeze, but will stink.
I just go outside and whip it out.
You could do it to a daylight opening and no trap, avoiding freezing, if you like cold winter wind blowing at your unit.

Do not put a "P" trap in it unless you are going to flush it with a bucket. A "P" trap is designed to keep sewer fumes out by staying filled with water after flushing. If you put a trap in with no water, the trap will fill up with piss and smell all of the time.

Personally, with no water, I really wouldn't put one in. Even though with no trap, it's still going to be covered with piss and start to smell rather quickly. If you don't have neighbors, or if they can't see behind your garage, I'd just take a leak outside and do away with the smell. It a slight inconvenience in the winter but when it's really cold out it'll just keep you from shaking it too much.

And if you're worried about neighbors, either put up a section of privacy fence or get a porta-jon dropped off and use that.
:thumbup:thats how p traps work, if you want bury a 5 gal bucket with hole in the bottom, put sand under the bucket for drainage, dump water after pee to keep smell from coming back up. Personaly I would just step out the side door out of sight of the neighbors and let it fly.

I have one of those laundry utility sink in my garage with a good garden hose attached to the faucet. Luckily I have a hose spigot right outside the garage that I hook the hose up to when I'm out in the garage. I plan on permanently plumbing a cold water supply line to my garage this summer.

For sink slash urinal draining, I just have a 5 gallon bucket underneath the sink. I whizz in the sink and turn the water on to rinse it out.

At the end of the day or when the bucket gets full, I just dump it into my plants out front. My wife finally figured out why our front yard plants were so lush lol

Buy a 55gal plastic drum, drill some 3/4 holes about 1ft from the top and add a 3" main line . Dig hole 2 ft deeper than drum height and place drum and main line, wrap with landscape cloth , backfill with gravel and cover with dirt. Connect to the Pisser and keep your mouth shut about it. This will work for #1and #2 if you place a toilet.

I stopped reading after the first page and a half. Most keep missing the fact that the OP ALREADY HAS the urinal. Clearly he wants to mount it in his barn. If for no other reason than the cool factor of having a urinal in his shop. I get it....

Like others have said - you WANT a trap to keep the smell and/or eventual sewer gasses from coming back into the shop. Just keep a five gallon bucket of water near the urinal and dump a little bit in after each piss. Then, just before winter temps reach freezing, dump a gallon of RV antifreeze or windshield washer fluid down the urinal to displace the water with something that wont freeze.
No sense in overthinking it. Maybe some day down the road you can run some water lines out to the garage and hook it up proper.

Good luck RABRods!

After a few pages, most people missed that this thread is like 5 years old.

After a few pages, most people missed that this thread is like 5 years old.

I've never really understood why some people think there is something wrong with responding to an older thread - especially one that continues to be reopened time and again. You're right - this thread was created in 2013 and I hadn't noticed until now that he ended up deciding not to use the urinal. But over the years this thread has been reopened several times, so clearly it's an ongoing issue. I'm pretty sure that over the next many years, there will be guys interested in mounting a urinal in their shops. When they search this subject, this thread will probably pop up.

Part of the point I was trying to make is that so many of the comments failed to address the OP's question and ignored the fact that he already had a urinal and just wanted to know how to hook it up without a water source. Most of the comments were telling him to pee on a tree, hang it out the back window, fill a jug or whatever. Everything EXCEPT what he was asking. In the end, he gave up on his project and sold the urinal. We can do better.

Lots of information and applicable suggestions can still be found in this thread - regardless of how long ago it originated. Sberry has a system nearly identical to my own setup. It works perfcetly for my shop. But if I had a urinal, I'd mount it in a second! Oh great! I hope I don't stumble across any local urinals on Craigslist now - lol.
