I have 7 smoke detectors hardwired together. One is in a poor location. Id like to remove it, and use a battery operated one, in a more accessible location. My plan is to turn off the power, remove the unit, cap the wires individually, and put a cover on the box, then turn the power back on. I'd then remove the battery from the removed unit, and hold the test button to remove any charge. Sound right? Appreciate the help.

The poor location may be in the location it's required to be.

If they're hardwired together, there's a good chance that they're interconnected in a way that if one detects smoke, the others sound their alarms too.

As A. E. Neuman suggests, it would be acceptable to cap the wires in the pigtail, but maintain connectivity of the black, white, and red wires going in and out of that specific box. So in other words, that box cannot be totally abandoned.

What makes it a poor location? Why not leave it in place and just add another one if you feel there's an underserved area?
