I just bought this at a estate sale and am wanting to complete it. Problem is the reference site to look at the old catalogs do not work on my phone so I cannot see them. Any and all info on the date as well as what tools are missing would be much appreciated. I will get a exact list of socket sizes soon. I just noticed there are three sockets that appear to be out of place. Notice the two 8 point and sockets and the 12 point. Oh and obviously the punch doesn’t belong there. Thank you in advance!

You're just missing the 3" and 6" extensions, the sliding t, and the crossbar for the flex handle. The 12pt socket doesn't belong to the set. That ratchet might be a little newer than the set. It's hard to see from the catalogs when they switched to the v style selector. Nice find! I have all the =v= era 1/4" sets.

Great info. Thanks!

So the two 8 point sockets belong to this set? Can you give me a list of sizes for this set please?

I actually just looked in my toolbox and I have the =v= 6” extension already.

It came with 7/32-7/16" six point sockets and a 1/4 & 5/16 eight point sockets. After the mid 60's, they did away with the 8pts and included a 5/32 and a 1/2" six pt.

The "v" style selector doesn't show up till the 1960 catalog at the earliest, and not shown in sets until 1964, but those years had a different box. Who knows if the little drawings are correct though.

Here's the catalog listing for your set from the 1957 catalog.

Let us know what you need. I probably have a few spare sockets kicking around.

I believe all the correct sockets are there actually. I’ll check soon and thank you!

I do need:

- 3” extension
- sliding T
- crossbar

Found the 3” extension and the T-Bar. All I need to complete it is the crossbar. I’ve had no luck finding one and feel like finding one as a stand alone item may be a task to say the least.

The crossbar seems to be the hardest part to find for any set. At least in my experience. A few of my =v= sets are still missing one. It's not marked craftsman or any thing, so if you find one that fits, grab it.

That’s what I’m afraid of. I’ll be looking hard for one now.

The cross bars are like hens teeth. I have two cross bars for the dozen or so sets I own.

A couple of years ago I bought a 1/4 double line V breaker bar with the cross bar off Ebay. I purposely looked for one that included the cross bar. The cross bar has a little ball on one end so it will stop and not slide all the way through.

Maybe you can find one that way.

Good luck.

Your set should look like this. The manufacturer’s mark on all the tools should be =V=.

The crossbar that goes in the breaker bar, not the sliding T Jabber. I have a few extras for 1/2" sets I can spare if someone is looking. I grab them whenever I see them, no matter the size.

I would be interested in a 1/2 one as I plan to put a 1/2 Craftsman set toghether as my next project.

You really must grab those cross bars whenever you see them. They’re tough to find, and are frequently bent even when you do track one down. Finding a good one is tough. In the last couple years, I completed the Craftsman 1/2” drive Whitworth and Metric sets from the 1960 catalog. As hard as the correct wrenches and sockets were to find, the cross bars were the last tools I found to complete both sets. Good luck completing your set. Be vigilant, you’ll eventually find one. Finding the correct tool box in good shape can also be challenging as well.

Where did you guys find yours? I see 1/2” and 3/8” on the bay much more than 1/4”. The only crossbars I have seen in 1/4” are in partial or complete sets and they want a ton for the set. I considered buying a partial set, but then I’m going to want to complete that set as well and will need another crossbar so it’s basically pointless.

To be honest I just started with putting sets together and have probably seen a crossbar or two when I go tool hunting at garage sales and the flea market, but since it’s just a little bar of metal I’m sure I looked right past it not knowing what it is. I think that’s why there is so few of them. People find them mixed in with other tools and figure it doesn’t belong in the set and it gets separated.

So that’s what it is and what it’s called.
The short doohickey has a ball on each end and a cut flat-tip, what is it?
