That ***** Pat. How much clearance do you try to maintain between the nozzle and the piece? Doesn't it have a Z drive to control that value or is it travel limited?

I have lots of spares, that was how it all started...................

I like spares...in the Race Car Transporter we had 2 spare Engines, 3 Transmissions, 2 Clutches, 120 Clutch Disks, 6 Third Members...God only knows how many spare plugs, hoses, ignitions...you name it...we had spares. I am the same way at home.

That ***** Pat. How much clearance do you try to maintain between the nozzle and the piece? Doesn't it have a Z drive to control that value or is it travel limited?

Nozzle Gap with the standard head is .050, .060 with Tilt-a-Jet and .080 with the A-Max Head.

I did get the Terrain Follower option but it is a pain in the **** to set-up and I don't really trust it. My buddy locally here, where I got the Nut, they have it and it caused more problems. I need to dig into it when I am not under my own deadline...LOL...

So yes the Z Axis is dynamic...but only when you tell it to move. Wish they had a capacitance head where it can sense the material and adjust on the fly. Our Lasers do that. We can cut Corrugated Material...so long as the Z Axis can move faster than the X or Y.

Yeah, we've seen your work.

Hmmm...Garage Journal OCD Club Shirts??? I have an idea...

I got the Nut I need...back in business...a fun 52 mile round trip...

The place I got it from where my buddy works is also a customer of ours. We have bailed them out of parts shortages in the past so it was no charge...isn't this a great country???!!!

One more quote and I am outta here!!!

Lucky duck. I hate learning what parts I need in that fashion.

Oh I am still learning...

Put everything back together and fired it doing a low pressure test shot. Works perfect...do the high pressure...again perfect. Low and high pressure with abrasive...perfect...I am ready to go.

Load the blank, set my offset and hit the start button. Pierces perfect goes through the lead-in around the corner and it was like an M80 went off. After 100 rounds per day for 6 days from a 50 cal Barrett with 23 others shooting the same firearm on both sides of me I thought what the hell just happened. Hit the pause button and everything was in 1 piece.

Hmmm...low pressure shot and I got water coming out of the side of the Nozzle???? Disassemble, examine and find the Final Filter and O-Ring with chunk taken out of them??? I must not have either cleaned it good enough or I did not have the O-Ring seated properly.

Down again...$2300 in spares on their way second day air!!!

I called my buddy and their Tilt-a-Jet head has a different filter on it...so I am SOL...

Back-up plan go into the plant early Sunday morning and run the Laser...or I take care of a few other things that need attention around here.

Lesson learned...I deserve a Warning Letter from Management for not ordering the spares the day we installed the machine. I'll suspend myself for 3 days...LOL...

If you're learning at least you're doing something right. Even if you're doing it wrong.

Running the laser for customers or because the 'jet is down?

EDIT: I was poking around the other day and ran across the Gun Cabinet thread- maybe you should update that? Or finish the cabinets???:beer:

I spent the last 48 hours at work and was expecting to see that plow done when I came back. I'm so NOT disappointed, **** happens Pat. Save it for another day, you only need to bust your *** when the snow is flying and you need it. Sit back and relax, no need to fret over a delay in the HOME shop.

Leave the worrying at work. Go take the wife out for ice cream like a caramel sundae, with chocolate ice cream, pecans and bananas.

Ah no worries Nutts...I have plenty of other things to keep me occupied.

With the down time I spent Saturday having coffee with 15 buddies early in the am and then did some Shop organization. The BIL showed up with his daughter and she watched us make a few machined parts and had lunch with us. First time I had a Beer with my niece since she turned 21. She doesn't understand why we like to play in the shop...LOL...

Saturday night I sat down in the design center and hammered a few more projects out and wrapped them up Sunday morning. Have more stuff for the Jet to cut now.

Also power washed the Generator behind the house. That has been on the honey do list for about 2 years. I always tell my Wife; "Once you ask me to do something you don't have to remind me every 3 years." It was dirty... and she can see it from the Counter Top Kitchen Windows.

Then I got the Skid Steer out and flipped the Compost Pile. A couple more turns and it will be ready.

So all was not lost...

Parts should be here tomorrow. I hope to have everything cut tomorrow night.

PS On the Ice Cream comment a few posts back...ummm...no secret agenda...LOL. I learned a long time ago Women instinctively know how to ask a Man a question that no matter how they answer it they will be in trouble. They will ask a question like: Honey are you going to wash my car or are you going to clean the Garage? Your plan was to go do something completely different like go Shooting, Play in your shop or have a beer with your buds...no matter how you answer that question you are going to be in trouble...you do what she wants...you're not happy...you do what you want and she is not happy...no matter what you lose.

So now I ask questions like: Do you want to get me a bowl of Ice Cream or have *** right now? Typical answer is: Do you want Hot Fudge or Raspberries on your Ice Cream.

I eat lots of Ice Cream...LOL...she is a Saint!!! She is always ready to serve me...LOL...

Back in business tonight. Spares came in this morning. After a 4 hour sales meeting to set the pace for next year I headed home and started dialing in the nozzle again. Mission accomplished.

Had an audience when my buddy and his son showed up to grab my implement trailer. His son is taking his Dodge Ram Diesel drag racing this weekend. He is a gear head an who am I not to take the time out of my day to feed his bad habit. He focused on metals and auto mechanics when he was in High School...thus he wanted to learn about the Jet.

Currently he is working in the family Landscaping business. This winter I hope to snag him and his brother into working part time for us in between plowing, their other business. Good kids who know how to work.

Today I think I made head way in to donating the Plasma Cutter to the my old High School. Got the call the board "may" approve the donation.

The plan was to donate everything less the Plasma unit. So they are struggling to come up with the funds for a new unit. I told the instructor I would help them out with a monetary donation and I'll talk to our welding supplier and see if they will help with an at cost unit.

I can't believe it is that hard to give something like that away for a worthy cause.

Tomorrow night I'll form this stuff up and start tack welding to make sure everything fits.

Gotta run...the Wife called at 6 and said dinner is ready...I think it is in the warming drawer...LOL...Pork Tenderloin...

Just caught the edit...

My ADHD keeps me bouncing...some react to the sighting of a "Squirrel"...me it is a "Water Jet"...

Finishing the Cabinets requires working with wood. A foreign substance in my world. A scary place for me to go. I mess up and I can not plug weld it and fix it.

But you are right...I need to wrap that up!!!

I'm curious how those two large pieces fit into this project.

I suspect those are the mounting plates for the skid steer.

Nutts...BD nailed it: Skid Steer Quick Attach Standard SAE J2513 Plate

The 2 parts will be formed and welded opposite of each other making a left and right and joined by (2) 2.00 x 2.00 x .250 Wall Tubes with the Pivot Brackets to mount the A-Frame.

Started the welding process last night. Had to take a brake in the action when I sliced my finger after a good pinch...dang thing would stop bleeding.

Found an issue with the Cad Model I downloaded for the SAE J2513 Plate. I knew I should have made a template and tried first...live and learn. The Plate is about 3/8 too long. So I had to grind the Tabs of the Top Angle Bracket and slide it down and fill in the Slots. Oh well having spent the first year of my Metal Career in the Grinding Dept I'll shape it so it looks nice.

Tonight I'll make a few spacer washers to makes sure everything is aligned and finish it up. Tomorrow will be spent fixing the length issue. It will take a little more welding a grinding.

Got a quote on the painting yesterday. They don't stock the Case Color and to order it is a 50 lb minimum @ $500 so I'll settle for a Brilliant Red they have in stock for the Blade and Black on the other components.

Had to pull the Skid Steer in to make sure it would fit correctly. Should have had a little help lifting it on myself...that is when I pinched and sliced my finger.

Perhaps a crane is the next addition?

The school board is probably concerned about ongoing support costs to keep the machine operational and software updates. Not to mention the exhaust system and make up air and heat/cooling said make up air.

This board really needs a "Like" button! I have made some skidsteer quick attach plates and also had trouble getting the plate just right. Then I found a local Mennonite guy that sells them for $70 so I just buy his and add whatever attachment I need onto the plate. Works for me.
When you say painting, are you going to powdercoat it? You can buy OEM paint at the dealer, add in some hardener, and it becomes pretty decent paint.

Addition??? Pallet Forks will do just fine...or the Engine Hoist.

They have accepted the donation. Now the issue is getting a Forklift on site to unload it off my trailer. This one will be replacing a 5 x 5 machine they already have. The 5 x 5 will be going to "North Campus".

I got the fit down...just the height was an issue related to a Bad Solid Model I downloaded. Next time test template. I should have known better.

Paint? Powder Coat. A friend of mine owns an Industrial Paint Shop about 150 mile of here. He has a truck in our dock daily picking up and dropping off. I am not a real fan of Powder Coat but until I get a Spray Booth I will not be painting here.

Speaking of hardener, where can one find it for Tremclad oil based paints?:lol_hitti

Have you tried ****** Paints, LLC? They specialize in Purple. The Hardener kicks over in about 4 hours.

Finally finished the welding today. Yesterday I got hung up at work.

The Nephew stopped out and gave me a hand lifting it on and off the Table. Everything fit perfect. And it works as it should. I have Float Mode and I can apply pressure down just like I wanted.

We Wrapped that up and headed to lunch.

After that had to take down a tree up by the old Shed. The storm Thursday night brought down a few branches. It was dead anyway. Now it is burning down to nothing in the fire pit.

Had 2 more trees to clean up in the backyard. They are too green to burn right now. I'll give them a few weeks to dry out. They were a couple of nice Silver Maples. Had to be at least 60 footers.

Tomorrow will be a day off from the shop. I have Range Safety Officer Duty from 7 am to 4 pm. Should be and I hope it is a busy day. Deer Rifle Sight-in is open to the public. It is always interesting watching people shoot. I just hope it is a safe day. In the past it always has been for the most part.

The club doesn't allow RSO to assist shooters. I always do. I would rather they learn proper techniques how to Zero a Rifle and find Natural Point of Aim (NPA).

I think a Jib Crane in the machine/weld shop makes a lot of sense. Always out of the way but always ready to use. I'm kidding of course but it's fun to dream about ideals. I'll likely build an A-Frame when the time comes that I require a "helping hand" in the shop.

Looks like it was a fun day and tomorrow will be too!

I definitely plan to include a jib crane in my future shop. I'm thinking of placing it just inside the widest/tallest door so I can swing it outside to grab things off a truck/trailer and swing back in to shop? A really trick set up in a shop would be a bridge crane!

I hate to think about snow coming but with that new blade mount you'll be ready for it Pat. I bought a Bobcat 8' power angle blade several years back and it works so much better than clearing the drive with a bucket. I just need a heated cab :)

Your mount is looking great Pat! How do you like the turf style tires in the snow? I've got the regular ag type on mine, and need to chain up when we get a heavy storm.

Gents a Jib would be nice but having in-floor heat and drill don't mix. Found that out already. Not to mention I really don't have a good spot to mount it and have it out of the way.

On the hunt for a Forklift...

Thank you. Not sure on the Tires yet. Just got this machine. I have noticed they do not perform as well in the mud or wet soil. The fill up and I slip-slide-away...

I am looking forward to using this plow. I currently have a Boss 8 foot on my Winter Truck. It is kind of a pain because of all the maneuvering I have to do.

At one time I had converted a Hiniker Plow, a nice 7 footer I scored off of Craigslist for $400. I made quick-tach mount for my JD 3720. It worked great until I figured out you need some place to put the snow. I listed on Craigslist, made a couple of grand off the deal and bought a JD 59 inch Blower. That works great but when you only get an inch or 2 it is not efficient.

Now I can use all 3 for their intended purpose. Having heat in the Cab will be nice...the ol'773 Bobcat had no heat.

Sundays Range Duty was fun for the most part. Only had 1 person who needed to be reminded not to "muzzle" anyone with their firearm. The guys I was assigned to work with were pretty good but not quite on their game. One guy fell asleep when it got slow. No one sleeps on my watch and he found that out in short order. We had 900+ shooters through the entire range that day. Next duty is this Sunday.

This morning I dropped the Plow items off for Sandblasting. I should be able to pick them up tomorrow evening. Then on Monday it is off to paint.

Tonight I need to start cutting tubing for a new Material Rack my Shear guy would like to sort out our 20 year collection of Shim Stock.

Balance of the Tubing will be here Thursday. If the weather is nice I'll drag my trailer in so I can take it home.

Ahhh, got it. I was wondering where those pieces would go. I figured a left/right for the mount. I just didn't catch they needed put in the press to be bent. Just laying there as flat pieces through me off.

What model Case is it? I assume its new, and has the tier 4 engine in it?

2018 SR210 as Travis mentioned. And yes it is a Tier 4...I like it. We will have to see how it does. If things start going hay-wire with the emissions We will be doing an emissions delete and make it into a smoker.

I don't mind the emissions in one sense. My Garage attached to the house has soot on the walls doors and ceiling from my 2003 Duramax Smoker. Since I got the 2016 and 2017 Duramax's no additional soot.

With your fab skills you may want to consider adding a removable box plow to your blade. It's unbelievable how much it speeds up production at my work. Check out www.kageinnovation.com if I'm not being clear on what I'm talking about.

On the possible build list...my Landscaper buddy was over last week and said the same thing. After talking about this application and my driveway and parking area it may or may not save time. Any Snows over 4 inches I use the Blower on the 3720 otherwise the Snow Piles and Windrows get to high or to big unless I start pushing them way out early in the year.

The Blower helps that.

Biggest issue is the Snow that slides off the roof. That all has to be removed with a Bucket and scraping. Stuff sets up like concrete after it falls and I can't get to it after I get home for the office.

Total area of snow removal in front of the building including half of the roof is 18144 sq ft. That is a lot of snow. The pile on the south side of the slab in front of the shop was 10 feet high and went 40 feet to the south across 80 feet. Anything under 4 inches I push in piles and then blow it over the mountain so when it melts it goes into the swamp on the south side of the property.

Last night I was heading to the saw to start cutting tubing and my ADHD kicked in. Saw the Water Jet and had to start playing with that again. Started cutting all the parts to make my Metric Socket Racks.

Thought I was going to have that wrapped up tonight but it looks like my Plow is blasted so I have to make the 36 mile run to Hastings MN in rush hour...just got the call as I was typing...maybe I'll skip the Ice Cream and work late into the night...

For anyone that thinks Pat is nuts (well he is, but that's another story) for putting a waterjet in his home shop:
Go cut 12 of the same part that you need for a project and weld the project together. If Pat started at the same time with his 'jet he'd be done welding and into half a case of Hamm's before you got done prepping parts. I'm kicking myself for not being patient and getting stuff cut rather than renting a plasma. 2 hours of grinding for some piddly ****. Bottom line- having clean and ready to weld parts off of your chosen cutting device is priceless.
Also I have to thank the existence of GJ for introducing me to Pat and thank Pat for making me a gauge tool on short notice earlier this week. Sounds like I'll be making another trip soon to pick up the rest of my socket racks.
Finally: dammit Pat why am I being made to look at pictures of this white garbage! Fall can last forever as far as I'm concerned. It's funny how small the tractor looks next to the plow truck.

Dude, Fact: I am certifiably NUTS!!! Ask anyone who knows me...my Wife married me because I am crazy. In a sane way. I'll try anything to further my skills or my education...except vegetables. When I flipped my car at 205.51 MPH in Virginia my only concern was if one of my crew guys had a phone so I could call my Chassis Builder to see where my new car was at. When we started the company with only a Card Table and 3 Chairs I was told I was nuts...well I always say "If you are dumb enough to try it you have the opportunity for success. If you are to smart to try you may never succeed."

Travis I am happy to help you out. And I am grateful for the business you have sent our way. We are only as good as the opportunities our customers present us. I want to be everyone of my customers Easy Button (except when it comes to the money...LOL...we will earn it through service. Sheet Metal is a byproduct).

He's gotta be nuts. I've never seen anyone else wear a welding helmet while operating a skid steer. . . . gotta be pure evilness right there.

Isn't that the pot calling the kettle black? NUTTS???

NUTTS see above...I think most here on the GJ are nuts in the average persons eyes. Spending time in our Garages/Shops working as they see it...we are having fun. Life is too short to sit and watch TV...make the best of everyday and every opportunity...that is how I live life.

Welding Helmet in a Skid Steer??? Yep...always be prepared...I keep a Cotter Pin in my Wallet. Why? Because you can buy a Condom at any 24-7 Mini Mart.

Picked up the Plow parts. I think I finally found a Sandblaster I can count on. Did exactly what he said he would do and had it done when he said it would be done. That earned him a $100.00 tip.

Need blasting in the Twin Cities call http://www.emptypockets4x4.com/

After sitting in our 2019 Strategic Planning Meeting for 6 hours today I was glad to come home to a nice plate of Spaghetti and Meatballs...and then come down here and forget about all the challenges moving forward.

Tomorrow I have a fast paced design project I get to have fun on. Coming to a store near you...soon...and I get help set the expectations for our Sales Team moving into 2019...we are on target for 23% growth this year and looking for 15% the next year. Best part is everyone for the most part is happy and having fun in the process. Nice to have a Team that has a common goal. It is not all Roses. We have a Labor shortage which is our only constraint but we are working on that. Our newest goal is to be one of Minnesota's Top 100 Places to work. This is where the "nuts" comes in. Mention that in a meeting...the look you get, you know that is exactly what they are thinking...I am dumb enough to try!!!

Ya'all have a good night!

LOL Pat, lol.

Labor shortage, I think that might be every where. If you were closer and would allow part time help, I'd fill out an application.

Picked up the Plow parts. I think I finally found a Sandblaster I can count on. Did exactly what he said he would do and had it done when he said it would be done. That earned him a $100.00 tip.

Need blasting in the Twin Cities call http://www.emptypockets4x4.com/

Thanks for the tip. Those are rare qualities these days.

I probably missed it somewhere... what is the name of your company? You mentioned you are looking to grow. There is always the possibility that I might come across someone that would be a good fit. Sounds like a great place to work and grow with you.

Yep we are seeing the labor shortage live and loud. We are working on it. More than likely the biggest challenge we face today.

Move to MN Nutts...the weather is always 68 degrees and sunny (in my Shop).

No problem...I always promote great service and great companies.

I keep the name of the company off GJ. Simply because our customer base do research us during their vetting process and I would rather they find us else where than GJ...no offense to GJ. It is a great place to hang out, learn and gain a wealth of knowledge...

I did send you a PM...

Tonight I wrapped up the Metric Set of Sockets...now all I have left is the 3/4 Drive stuff.

Before (now Travis's). I was supposed to make these from Stainless years ago...many years ago. I can cross this one off the list if I can find that list.

Forgot to put up the Blasted Plow items last night.

Tomorrow the plan is to leave work at noon. I can already tell that might be a bust. One of my customers is already warning me they have a hot one coming in...they want a quote tomorrow and place the PO and get parts on Wednesday with Paint...Sunday night might be the ticket for getting it programmed.

Yesterdays hot one was released to production before I left today. Turned out to be pretty simple.

So tomorrow afternoon I have a few cracks to fix in the plow discovered after blasting. I can fix anything except the crack of dawn and a broken heart...

Somebody say Ice Cream?

Im at a loss for words. Everything I read in this thread is amazing.

Thank you XJ. Just doing what I love!!!

Been a while. Life gets busy outside the shop too.

I made it out of work Friday early. Touched up some of the cracks I found on the Plow after blasting. Then I spent Friday night cleaning up and organizing and continued Saturday morning until I had to head off to a meeting.

Back at 11 am to meet up with a buddy and his boys. One of them is very skilled in Math at the ripe old age of 14 and he wanted to see the Water Jet run.

We did that and now he is undecided on what topic he will do a paper on for a class. Options: Water Jet vs Laser or 338 Lapua vs 50 Cal. In either capacity I will lend a helping hand. The latter has to go before the school board for approval. I am pushing for the latter. Just how I roll.

After an afternoon of education it was off to dinner and to bed. Big day ahead...Range Safety Office Duty. Sunday was scary. I was assigned 3 idiots and 1 decent guy. Myself and the decent guy had our hands full.

Had a couple of kids from an Intercity Mentoring Program come in with his sponsors who overwhelming them with Firearms Intel. They didn't teach him about Scope Eye Relief and he got "Scoped". Not to bad but any wound to the head bleeds like a stuck pig.

About a half an hour later his slightly older Brother was commissioned to fire a Thompson Contender chambered in 308. Yep right between the eyes. This one needed medical.

Then the Club President shows up and see my idiots slacking and starts riding me like a 20 inch bike. I told him I do the best I can with what I have. They work for you not me or I would have fired them...LOL...sorry but I take Range Duty as serious as a heart attack.

At the end of the day the other decent guy thanked me for my hard work. It was a tough 9 hour grind. Had 1200 shooters through the entire Range.

Tonight I only had a couple of hours to play so I decided to make my Clamps for the X-Y Fence I made a few weeks ago. They work...need to redo the 10-32 Set Screws in 1/4-20. I'll take care of that tomorrow night.

3/4 Aluminum Tool Plate. Cut the profile and headed over to the Mill...

I am so glad I grabbed all these hunks of Material over the last 20 years. They really come in handy...eventually I'll repurpose them all.

The Plow is out for paint. I am hoping to have it back this weekend so I can get it assembled.

Tomorrow night??? Might work on the 3/4 Drive Socket Tray.

Wow. Range duty sounds like it was a little stressful. Hope those guys grow to find an appreciation for firearms. I also hope the 14yo decides to write about ammo as well.

I have some time this Saturday that I was hoping would be spent at your place but my truck is calling for pads and rotors. I'd like to see the fence on the 'jet as well as the plow. Hopefully that speeds up clearing of the white stuff this winter. I'm excited for the day that I can start collecting material in a home shop. Any way you slice it, it's nice to have stock.

@4 FN 27 "Have you tried ****** Paints, LLC? They specialize in Purple. The Hardener kicks over in about 4 hours." Funny, NOT.
