What can I use for a 55 gallon burn barrel top to arrest sparks? Where can I get it?

It would be expanded metal lathe that you get at a metal supply. Problem is if you have fires like me it will melt quick. Anything heavy enough will be a pain to move every time you put something in it

I have a chunk of expanded steel, probably 1/8”?? It is big enough that I just bent the corners down to help keep it in place. Also it sticks out far enough that the corners stay a bit cooler so I can just grab it with gloves. It’s lasted about 8 years...

Forgive my ignorance, I am new to using a burn barrel. I have one now that I live out in the county. What is the value of the top screen? To keep hot ambers from floating out? I have my barrel in the middle of the yard, about 40' from nearest structure or plant. Is there a real hazard of setting something on fire from that distance?

Yes. Embers can float a long, long, way. We once had a fire burn about 100 acres started by a burn barrel ember. That guy learned the hard way.

Every farm store I've been to sells pre-made burn barrel screens. That's the first place I'd go to.

There is a $1000 dollar fine for having and using a burn-barrel in the area. There is an extra charge for the fire department dispatching a truck and crew to put the fire out.
My neighbour refused to pay and the city put a lien on his property. After his death the city had to be paid, first, before the sale could be finalised.

don't get caught!
The Open Burning Rule is one of North Carolina's oldest air quality regulations, first adopted in 1971. The rule prohibits much outdoor burning and sets conditions for allowable fires. Under the rule, it is always illegal to burn trash and other non-vegetative materials. ... NOTE: The N.C.

Yeah an open barrel fire can turn into an out of control outside fire pretty quick. Just take your precautions and the FD won't bug you much. I don't know the particulars of your situation but I see how it goes here in city and unincorporated county lands here in TX - cross your Ts and dot your Is and you're good. As for nosy neighbors, they're the wild card.

I had a visit from the fire dept due to a small burn pile at my last house. Later I learned that outdoor burning is not allowed, but outdoor cooking is.

Local municipalities don't allow burning debris except for recreational or ceremonial. The jokes always been keep a pack of marshmallows and weenies with you when you burn your yard debris.

I live outside the city limits. Other than forestry or state burn bans I'm good.

I've got a barrel but lacking a top screen I haven't used it.

^ Same where I live. Always have your hot dogs or s'mores supplies sitting there and ask the authorities if they'd like one. If it wasn't for loopholes, what would we jump through?

Based on state law, your burn barrel is illegal for garbage burning regardless of burn ban status.

If they are LEGAL in your area!
Burn barrels are for "paper" waste, not general garbage.
Don't burn them in the late Winter, early Spring in there is LOTS of DEAD Dried Grasses around or you will quickly find out how fast a Brush fire starts!

Burning garbage used to be fairly common in the rural areas around here. Times have changed though you still see it occasionally. Most areas have mandatory garbage pickup. Trash is still burned.
