I have been looking for a wood chipper in the 6” range and have a line on a PowerTek 727 chipper. Web searches didn’t turn up much so looking to the GJ for help. It is a rental machine from a small hardware store with 1400 hours. 25hp with hydraulic power feed. They are asking $5000 which I think is high, but I haven’t talked the owner yet to see if he would come down at all. I’m thinking more like $3000.

Looking for advice, or anyone with experience with this machine?

What are you basing the 3k off? Comps or gut?

That's a lot of money that could be spent on rentals? You going to use it enough to justify the maintenance and repair costs?

I suspect if the OP has "been looking for a wood chipper in the 6" range" he has enough need to justify it. Wish I could help more but my experience is only with tractor mount / PTO driven chippers.

I've needed bigger chippers than that but have no justification to own one. I think it is a reqsonable question for someone asking for advice.

The only listing I could find that was for sale was one that sold at an auction for around 3K. The Vermeer I have looked at were 5K. They are similar to the PowerTek, but are more heavy duty commercial units.

I would rather deal with the maintenance than the local and only rental company in my area.

I got a Vermeer 625 for $5k. I have owned it for over 10 years and hit the buy/rent break even point after the first two years.

While some chipper replacement parts are generic, some are custom and only available from the OEM. So I wouldn’t recommend spending $5k on a niche brand. If you are buying rather than renting you probably want to be able to find spare parts in 10 years. And what are the chances Powertek is still in business?

That is one of the things I worry about, not finding parts in the future. I’m going to call the company Monday and pick their brain.
