Hello I picked this vise up and it appears to be really old. It is a Parker Vise and it appears to be a No. 25. I haven't been able to find that model number on any other vise Parker made. I am undecided if I want to restore it or leave it in its current state. I have not been able to find any info on it, so I would hate to ruin the nostalgia of it. It has 5.5" jaws, opens 8" wide, measures 19.5" long and 10.5" high. It weighs 85lbs. It has the single underside post mount with the original nut and washer. The jaws appear to be removable with pins. The keeper in the front appears slightly damaged but I have never seen a Parker device like that before. Also the handle has a lot of movement in it. I am not sure if that is normal for this vise since it looks very old. Any help would be great.

Not the normal vise we fellas like in here, but I thought I'd post it up anyway. I've been doing some more woodworking lately and I thought it was time to pick up a real woodworking vise. I got this vise from a fellow GJ'er and did some work on it this weekend. Surprisingly, it was much harder to take apart than a standard bench vise - had to grind out the handle knob AND the dog knob to get it down to its component parts, which required drilling and tapping...what a pain in el butto. Now she's ready for mounting under my bench!

Drove 4 hours round trip to pick this up late this afternoon. 100$ and worth every hour of drive time. I have been looking for one of these for awhile now. It's got to be around 150 pounds it's a heavy one with 6" Jaws.

Dang, looks nearly unused. Nice find. That would be listed on CL in the Dallas area as "NOS Wilton HUGEEEEEEEE - $950 NO HAGGLING"

PWR, I picked up the same vise locally this past summer. But mine is not in the same condition as yours. Mine is missing the swivel base, one jaw, the collar, and the dust cap. Some yahoo welded the missing jaw to the static jaw tower and you can still see the remnant damage from this. And I think that the screws for holding the collar in place were broken off in the threads so a screw extractor will likely be required. It will take some effort to get mine back in proper working condition. Fortunately I bought this vise together with a smaller Wilton bullet vise (with 4 1/2" jaws) that was in a little better condition. I repaired the smaller vise and sold it for more than I paid for the pair. So effectively I got the bigger vise for free. But it is going to take some work to bring it back to life. I normally wouldn't be willing to expend this level of effort to repair a vise, but it is the only Wilton 600 machinists bullet vise I have ever seen.

I had it media blasted but I've yet to paint it. I think subconsciously I'm waiting until I justify the expense of buying a swivel base for it from Nick.

In April another GJ member posted that he had a handle/screw assembly and collar from a brand new Wilton 600 available. Only had a slight bend in the handle but Wilton shipped him a new one. He gave it to me for just the $45 it cost to ship. I liked the idea of using the brand new parts and I figured I could easily straighten the slight bend. Turns out the screw is longer also so it'll have to be shortened too.

I have my 600's original handle/screw assembly and collar that I'd be willing to donate to yours for just the shipping cost if interested. Send me a PM if so and we can check some measurements and get the ball rollin'.

Those look like two different diameter screws to me. Do they both thread into your vise properly? Is there more slop in the threads with one compared to the other, or do they feel about the same?

Hey guys. I found an old Parker 42 1/2 in great condition that I'm cleaning up. I was hoping someone could help me date it but i can hardly find any information on it. It has patent dates of May 28, Nov 26, and Dec 17 1867. I did see it in a catalog from 1879, but in an 1876 catalog only the No. 42 is shown which leads me to believe it was added to the line between those years, or that the 1876 catalog I found just didn't have it listed. Does anyone know more about this vise or how I can tell when it was made?

Yes it is in very good condition. i actually paid 200 but traded for 100 of the price.

That is definitely salvageable, but will require a lot of man hours to get it back in shape. Keep us posted on the progress! I think it is definitely worth your time, I love a challenging project like you 600. They are very hard to find out here in my neck of the woods.

I don't keep up with this thread, so I don't know if anybody has posted this already, but there's an estate sale this week that someone here needs to visit.

It's in Erie, PA and they have a whole bunch of old wooden mould forms from Hollands that are even marked as to which model they were from. They also have a very nice looking Hollands swivel jaw that is in the sale.

Just a guess, but it sure seems like this person may have worked at/for Hollands with this many pieces.

I happened across this Youtube video tonight: a young guy gets a big Chas Parker #806 vise and gives it a cosmetic cleanup (strip the old green paint off, lube it up and put it back together.) He has it clamped in a Wilton bullet while he works on it.

His channel is worth checking out as well, he does a lot of blacksmithing and forging.

Just finished my first starrett! Ready to mount!

324 1/2 oiled, and lettering dabbed with with paper towel method.

Sweet vise! Supper excited about it! No wire wheeling!!! Stripper and electrolysis, some die grinder use, and fairly high speed pneumatic drill with nyalox wheels.

Spent a couple weeks in Chicago. Wasn’t able to meet up with Nick while I was there... ***** but it is what it is. Brought home a few goodies.

And a 400N as I was leaving town. The chain vise is actually apart of a compound leverage pipe wrench, but will be mounted on the service truck before long.

The vise market has been pretty dry up in Western NY for the past year. I picked this up last night, which is the first vise I have bought since last summer. I know some of you aren't into blacksmith vises, but I've been looking for a good one for a few years.

5" jaws, 44" tall, 76 pounds - guy that sold it said it was sitting in the garden when he moved in. The main screw is seized up but everything is intact. Looks to be hand forged and pretty old. Paid $35.

I don't see any obvious markings on it....hoping something might come to light when I start cleaning it up this weekend.

Chris, the Craftsman 5163 was painted with 3 coats of Rustoleum hammered copper, followed by two clear coats. The clear coat can be tricky to apply I've found. If the weather conditions aren't right, it won't give you that crystal clear wet paint look. Make sure that the dew point is at least 10 degrees lower than the actual temperature and that the humidity isn't any higher than 65% when you spray. Apply it in thin layers. Otherwise clear coat has a very strong tendency to run on you.

I'm doing a Starrett/Athol in Hammered Copper, but I really like the color of that Sienna Mist. Unfortunately I have no Rock Islands (yet).

Picked up this Morgan vise a while back for $30. Just got around to painting it. Based on the story from the guy I got it from, it's most likely from the early 1930s. Anyone who knows the history of these know if that might be correct?

Thanks Paul, it's Rustoleum X2 "Seaside" in satin finish. I like this type of Rustoleum paint - it includes the primer and is pretty forgiving if you accidentally get overzealous on the coat thickness.
