Found My New Favorite Knife

I'll be the first to admit, I'm not a huge knife nerd. I like knives, I use them all the time, and I have had an EDC knife of some kind ever since I was in high school.

I've always used an inexpenisve folder. Kershaw, Gerber or my Leatherman. They worked fine.

Then, a buddy gave me a Spyderco as a gift, and it was a fantastic knife. I began to get into the mid-upper tier of commercial knives, 2, 3 hundred dollar knives.

When I discovered OTF (out the front) knives, I liked them (a lot) but at the time, Michigan couldn't carry them.

The law changed last year sometime, so I decided to splurge for a Benchmade Precipice Dual Action OTF.

I really like this knife. The action is silky smooth, moves in and out with a satisfying "click". The blade is SV30 steel, the handle and lever are hard anodized aluminum. It has a deep carry pocket clip.

I'm doubtful I'll ever go back to folders.

Is it only sharpened on one side?

Yes, I can't legally carry a 2 sided one.

I EDC a Microtech X85 and it’s the perfect OTF for me. Just comes in so handy to carry a knife, and I also like the small size of the X85 too. Plus I like how most people don’t even know what it is, since most have never seen an OTF knife in person.

I've always wanted one of those from Banchmade.

We;re only allowed plastic butter knives painted safety orange with a marshmallow guard on the point in Ca. new law, you're not allowed to purchase one online with out the Governors OK in Ca..

I have a Microtech UTX-85. Can't go wrong with a Benchmade, I have 3 of their non auto knives.

It can't pocket deploy. The spring is at rest unless you're actively pushing the lever one way or another.

My would be step mother has been sitting in on a grand jury doing indictments in Staten Island ny. She said you’d have no idea how many people are getting charged for owning gravity knives like that.

I have two cheap models i bought a while ago after a YouTuber did a review on them. Forget the brand name, but they were cheap, like $20 or something.. I’m sure they dont feel like a quality knife would, but the things work flawlessly.

My edc is a Milwaukee hardline.. never getting anything else.

I have been carrying the same no name $10 Leatherman knockoff for over 20 years, only to work though. It's all about the pliers and wire cutter for me but the blade and screwdrivers get occasional use. It has saved me thousands of trips out to the truck to get a real tool.

Do you have any insight on to why it can't be sharpened on both sides? It just seems like a duller knife to me.

I'm not a lawyer, nor so I think the current laws make sense, but here's my theory.

The law had originally banned daggers, stilettos, and other stabbing instruments from being carried concealed. These all have 2 edges. Having one edge is a defining line between tool and weapon.

That said, I've never owned or needed a 2 edged pocket knife, so I really don't care.

I cut rope, open boxes, cut stretch wrap, stuff like that. This is more of a novelty than a requirement. I got by fine with a simple knife. This is just cooler.

I bought the Infidel Benchmade. Its a very cool toy but thats about it. The single side OTF might be something to look at. I carry a 940 when I'm not in the shop, then its a Leatherman Wave. Tough to beat Benchmade products, their more money but worth it

According to Legal Blade you can sharpen the other edge of it but you'd have to carry it in a holster openly. I know, defeats the purpose. All of the other stuff you mentioned is the same way including razor blades. Kind of tight laws there but better than some others. In Florida we can do just about anything we want as long as you have a CWP. Without a permit our laws are actually worse than yours. Only thing that can go in a pocket is a common pocketknife which is very loosely defined.


Only thing we can't have are ballistic knives.

Oh forgot, my edc is a Southern Grind Bad Monkey. Been carrying it religiously for about 4 years. Steel is a little soft but I have a love affair with the piece itself. My blade only cuts tape and (hopefully never have to but...) flesh if ever needed. The soft steel isn't an issue for me. I keep the edge polished and razor sharp. It has an Emerson wave on it so it comes out of the pocket already open and locked.

+1 I haven’t been carrying them that long ^^^, around 2006 I started with the Benchmades a 585, 520, 140. I have never looked back. Great Knives.

I can buy a pocket gun and carry it legally for less than that really nice knife. I once called our state police and threw out the question if I can carry a gun with my CWP, why can't I carry an automatic knife with my CWP. All I got was silence on the other end for a few seconds and then he said, "Oh God, please don't complicate things......" CWP's were new to SC when I called.
I used to carry a Kershaw Ken Onion Blackout every day until I bought my new car in 2014. Geniuses designed/installed the parking brake lever against the drivers right leg. Anything in my right pocket gets under the parking brake and lifts it up as I'm driving.
Lights and alarms start going off all the time. All they had to do was put a latch detent to hold the lever in the down position.

That's a slick knife. I too usually carry typical Kershaws (love the speedsafe) but am also known to be hard on them, it's a screwdriver too right? But I have been looking to a nice expensive EDC knife. I've looked at OTF knives and would love one but I don't think in OK they are legal to carry.

I wouldn't mind a Norseman. I've met John Grimsmo, he's a really nice guy and makes a great knife. I just can't justify 1k on a knife at this point in my life.
