Fast forward to the year 2050

Dude #1--"Hey, that purple car motor mount was installed with a tapered washer. But it is toast. Where in the world did that come from?"

Dude #2--"Dunno. Bezosearch can't find one anywhere. It's sounds crazy but the alloy is Pepsi can #101. I already sent the specs to the printer so we will have it in a minute."

Dude #3--"I heard the old codger with the Caboose makes them, and he lives right up the road. Burnout says he has like 400,000 of them. He's hard to understand though, old dude's a Pepsi addict!" :lol_hitti

Oh no Andy is using 4 letter words especially the F word. Hope he doesn’t end up in a roadside ditch. lol

Hope the Freeble Brothers take their show on the road. After the hurricane, Jim and I will need a pick me up. I think Jim has plenty of Pepsi.

Engine is in the car!

attachment.php

The good

The motor mounts lined up great and bolts went right in.

attachment.php

Nice fit. I used an old screw jack to hold up the tailshaft so I can make minor repairs to the rear cross member. It will not settle like a hydraulic jack.

attachment.php

And the tailshaft is centered in the X-brace. The front motor mounts could have pushed it to one side had they not been aligned.

attachment.php

And the driveshaft went right in with an appropriate amount of gap available.

attachment.php

The Bad

The car was always hard to shift out of Park. I figured out why today, the shift rod from the steering column was pushing almost directly at the centerline of the bell crank on at the transmission. I cut the bell crank apart and rotated the input lever 30 degrees and it shifts great now. But it will hit the exhaust when shifted to low. I can modify the exhaust slightly and provide clearance. That will also help where the exhaust has been touching or almost touching the brake switch terminals.:shocking:

The Ugly

I put the driver's side header back on to verify exhaust elevation and found two things

1 The header is hitting the new urethane motor mount. That's ugly. The header would not go all the way on. I have to take the motor mounts back off and see if they can be ground down enough to provide clearance. I wasn't expecting that. And not sure the urethane will stand the heat.

2 The header interferes with the steering shaft with the multiple U-joints. It looks like I'll have to relieve the edge of the cast motor mount more than I did, and alter the carrier bearing mounting. In retrospect the engine should have been offset 1/2" or so laterally to provide more clearance. I'll look at the motor mounts to that end when I have them back off.

Other News

In other news, anyone close enough can have some free thermopane glass if you like. These were delivered by my neighbor and are not fogged. Once I take the aluminum off they would make great fixed windows in a shop. Same thing I used in my 3D router enclosure.

attachment.php

Other wise they're destined for the dump.

Thanks for stopping in, background provided by the Feeble Brothers...

Andy: sounds like you learned a bit on the first attempt to put the engine back in. best of luck on all the modifications, fixes and improvements.

WHICH SATURDAY does your son get the purple car??

so where do we buy the CD or do we just keep getting little snippets from the traveling band?

cheers

Is this a one step forward and two steps back kind of a deal?

A lot of the time when I fix something it dawns on me why it had not been fixed before.

You will over come all those troublesome details and the final out come will be much better than before.

Sorry to see your setbacks Andy. I know those types of cars are a pain for packaging big V8's versus what they came with from the factory.

I am looking forward to hearing some live ZZ TOP. I have seem them twice in concert and they are by far one of my favorite bands.

I just noticed the motor is painted Purplish like the car. Not sure how I feel about that. :D

Andy minor issues but they can be a pain to deal with..

Yep, they just take time, and the decisions as to how much time to put into the fix.

I learn something every day. I don't think the engine will have to come back out, but I need to do a little more fiddling with it yet.

He'll get it on Saturday, I thought I said that.

We'll have an 800 number soo...

The car is an interesting mix. It was obviously a frame off restoration at some point. The entire frame is painted purple. And I've found at least two places where metric bolts were screwed into English threads. A lot of real nice work and a little pretty shoddy work. I swear I have not touched it before.:lol_hitti

The entire car is painted in the two shades of purple, except for the bottom of the body. I knew the engine was a tight fit and tried to put it back where it had been, but it certainly needs some tweaking or heavy hammer blows. The new motor mounts interfering with the headers was unexpected.

ZZ Top, they were a cherry of a band!

Not sure if this will help but how about beating the header tubes in. I had to do this on my 442. On Power Nation, Engine Power, they did an experiment on denting in headers since some car header combos require that. They bent in a tube by 50% and the engine picked up HP. Of course individual results may vary. Lol.

Yikes on the motor mounting issues! Those alloy mounts looked great in place but the urethane won't like the heat for long. Can you change the mount orientation so the 'rubbers' sit on the frame and make new mount brackets for the engine? Reverse the setup. Would need to cast two sets of brackets though you have all the dimensions now.

Hehehe... I had to make a tapered spacer this weekend too. Mine was HDPE to set the front foil angle of attack on a hydrofoil. Funny though the setups weren't that different. :)

Feeble brothers - A hot metal band?

PS. Cola comes in other flavours? :)

Sorry to hear about the exhaust, hopefully you can tweak it enough to get away

Thanks! I still have a big hammer, but things are looking better today.

Yeah, I did mention heavy hammer blows. But, once again I got lucky (wasn't that Cliff's dog?). I'll post some pictures later.

I really know nothing about headers. I've seen guys make them but they seem to just weld tubes together and don't necessarily figure out the harmonics involved in having one charge scavenge the next cylinder. It is not surprising that properly located venturi's could improve performance.

I'll be right there. Don't trash it. I'm hoping you'll have two by the time my lane lands.

That sounds pretty damn good!

I think Andy has a min slightly greater than 1 can.

It does look good! My minimum anywhere I can walk is one can. Anywhere I can drive is two cans.

Made some good progress today!

I looked at the header to motor mount again and trimmed the motor mount with a grinder and got 1/8" clearance. That will fit a sheet metal heat shield. I plan to have a heat shield between the header and the urethane and aluminum.

Took the steering shaft assembly out because it looked like it needed to be lengthened a bit to give it more offset from the header. Turns out they had stuck the shafts in too far and that limited the knuckle movement. You can see the end of the shaft inside the yoke.

attachment.php

These are small, that's just a little yoke.

Cut the first section apart, which is where the greatest angles are.

attachment.php

Here's the assembly, and the shifter bell crank is behind. The flat plate was originally in line with the hook that goes in the transmission yoke (another little yoke)

attachment.php

I put it in loose, measureed, took it out and tacked it, then put it back in. I only added 1/8" over the original, but I'm not obstructing the U-joint angle now.

attachment.php

We have some clearance now.

attachment.php

I think plenty. The tightest spot is the top U-joint yoke to the header, and it's OK.

attachment.php

I enlarged the hole in the motor mount bracket made to hold the steering carrier bearing so the rod end could come through it. That made an improvement in clearance too.

attachment.php

Now I have to build a plate to hold the rod end in place. but the interference's have been resolved with a minimum of work.

Pay no attention to the blob of silver paint. I had ground off an attachment weld and painted the bare metal, in the dark. But it won't rust.

Thanks for dropping in!

It was a beautiful day here, low 60's (16C) so we took the old blue car to lunch. Can't visit because the pipes are a bit loud.

attachment.php

Yes, that is Walmart parking lot. My kind of people there.

Then I managed to get everything painted.

attachment.php

Seems there's little yoke everywhere.

attachment.php

Tomorrow is the transmission mount cross member. The hole in it is hacked up so I'm going to locate the mount bolt and weld up the cross member so it has just the one hole. Then it's time to start assembling everything back on the engine. Just need to check the intake for warpage.

Thanks again for dropping by!

Andy/Bob - brothers all! :shocking:  :lol_hitti

I'm more thinkin' the Feeble Brothers are a comedy routine. Mainly because - by crikey you don't want to hear me attempt to sing. It'll waken the dead.

But - I do think we could pull off a good "Who's on third?" type routine......

Or, I used to be really good at Uni (just under a hundred years ago) at the Python routines - "Go away - he's just a very naughty boy" etc..... And of course Bob could do the "that's only a flesh wound routine" fairly accurately. :bounce:

Anyway - I hope all you Eastern Boys have got your heads down and the sand bags loaded. Looks pretty nasty over there....

Andy: I'm just sitting in my chair watching and learning (A LOT) so thanks for the pictures and stories and the YOKES.

just curious are you going to put more weld on that new repair that you tacked in place or did you and I just couldn't see it with my old eyes.

do you park out in the RV parking area at Walmart to avoid getting door dings in their parking lot or is that where you pull up and visit with the overnighters to get their take on the world?

have another great SATURDAY!!

AND A VERY WELL DONE making the improvements on the purple car.

Hey Andy, so many yokes - you had me in stiches. [emoji1]

Good to see that you solved your clearance issues without resorting to drastic measures - although I have been known to attack a header tube for clearance (with no noticeable downside).

Andy don't you just love recreating someone else's nightmare? As long as thinking is required on earth, we all should be safe; if we can remember what we were thinking of?:headscrat

Thinking does seem to be going out of style in some circles. I still try it sometimes, but I'm getting rusty.

Nice work as always, i find the more i work behind someone else lots of time they put more effort it doing it cheap or lazy than it would take to do it right.:wtf: Not saying that is your case but just a thought when i read the above post.

I agree, sometimes it is hard to understand why some things were done the way they were. Often it is because they don't know what to do to do it right. And sometimes it's the result of inadequate resources, make do with what you have. Time constraints can result in some unusual work too.

Some things I don't know what the right way to do it is, so I plow through and do what I know will work.

Andy: I'm just sitting in my chair watching and learning (A LOT) so thanks for the pictures and stories and the YOKES.

Every tack gets checked for fit, then get finished welded. If you're referring to the bell crank, it was welded before painting.

Funny the blue car is just about door ding proof with the running boards. I park it by itself so the folks that want to come and look it over have plenty of room. More some days than others, but I try to accommodate anyone who wants to look at it.

Thanks! I pulled the purple car into the shop on 10 September so it was there a month yesterday. I am very glad I didn't have someone replace the transmission, there were several things which needed fixing and I'm closing in on getting them done bu ta shop would have pulled out the old and back in with the new.

Progress was slow today, but still got some time in. On the way out to the barn I saw a big hawk (probably red tailed) sitting on top of a tree. He looked BIG. Just left of the post.

attachment.php

OK, squint

attachment.php

While I was out at the barn I called up the cows to feed them their first of the season (they've been on grass all summer). lo and behold a big steer came in with them. So he got weaned, now I have 11 to sell. And a little guy wandered in too, so I castrated him. He forgot to thank me.

Time to put the crossmember in. They had it bolted on with the C facing upward, supported only on the edges of the flanges. I decided to make some spacers out of pipe. Having a lathe is nice, !/2 Cup.

attachment.php

The crossmember had been altered, apparently in a hurry.

attachment.php

I had measured as carefully as I could, you might have noticed the layout lines. Welded up the hole and drilled a new one to match where the transmission needs to sit. It's a little offcenter to the passenger side, but the clearance from the electric speedometer transmitter to the X-brace really won't allow dead center.

attachment.php

Crossmember in place with the screw jack removed. You can see two of the spacers the bolts are going through.

attachment.php

I also spent some more time sandblasting the headers. I'm slow but they're about ready to paint.

attachment.php

That's it for today, I have the day off tomorrow so I'm heading to the shop.:rocker:

You are so right Andy, the advantages of having a lathe.

It seems some of the most valuable jobs are actually the simplest. I have a hot saw and a cold saw, and although they cut squarely, not as precise as the lathe. Carbide insert tooling has been a real boon to amateurs like me, but I still grind a HSS tool occasionally. HSS, brand new sticks, are cheap at garage sales and boot sales.

It is wonderful to have you visit my place. I remember when you first found Garage Journal and spent a lot of time at Vladimir's.

There are so many interesting threads on Garage Journal I've found I really don't have time to take on more so I just stick with the ones I am familiar with. I regret missing so much good stuff on other threads but time is limited. I'm honored that you would like to read my drivel. Buy a Coke while you're here! (dimes are on top of the machine)

ANDY: Stray cows in your area just roaming around?

so the one cow says to the other let's follow these gals in to that farm and get some good food and maybe a haircut. well they got more than their hairs cut.

OMG it's not easy being a cow in your neighborhood with you and your snippers handy. I'm sure there is a good reason why you do what you do or maybe you are thinking of making all your steers some BRASS BALLS?

have another great day (what day is it?).

cheers and i'm still waiting for the ice tea or sweet tea so I guess i'll have to bring tea bags, a few glass gallon pickle jars and maybe you can provide some hot water.

keep up the great work on the PURPLE CAR and sounds like its in good hands.
