Got this stuff a couple of weeks ago. This gives you a good idea of the type of things I collect.

During our 4th garage sale of Friday, setting behind yet another Christmas Santa, was this level. 8 bucks, didn't even argue. No names or numbers, one end is busted. There are three glass bubble holders, yea I'm calling them bubble holders. I'm sure someone has the correct term, "bubble holder" works for me. Anyway I think it's pretty sweet.

They just don't make tools that double as works of art anymore! :) Seriously, as I have said before, I have flipped things like that or re-purposed things like that at yuppie antique shops as antique home décor. That would make a great mantle piece, for example. (EDIT: And of course I know you know I have an affinity for the kinds of things you've been collecting and showing for a few years here now, dfa. Nice open steel fan, too! We just need to get Jim_No_Garage and a couple other guys like that - including me sometimes - some Autumn season juju to tip the scales back toward 'Almost everything goes' a little more... ;))

LesserSon: We're good!

Smoke: At the risk of losing a loyal and valued participant, I am actually inclined to let things like 'The Great Spare 5-Gallon Can' Debate play out a little, and I'd have to disagree that it's not characteristic of the Garage Sale thread. We've always had impromptu "deep dives" here on many subjects over the years, including how to date anvils, how to date Coleman stoves, which grinder stand belongs to which grinder, how to discern old stained glass from new stained glass, handmade furniture, etc. In fact, it's part of the characteristic of this thread I have always admired the most - not only sharing what we find and how much it costs (honestly, as I have said many times before, not that important to me), but collecting tips and knowledge in general. It's like when the guys on American Pickers reveal their tells or have to call an expert on the phone. I do agree with you that it could be too deep (and too distracting) and it should move on after awhile, and I was admittedly slow to react (again, probably because I happened to be embroiled) in that one. Again, my bad.

But hey, it's October, awfully late to be talking about what this thread is and isn't!

Let's get picking!

I agree with the concept of occasional deep dives--I too have learned a lot of interesting stuff from our excursions, both tool and non-tool. As for preserving discussions in separate threads, I note that Google will find the discussions wherever they take place, so posterity will not be deprived of our collective wisdom.

I picked up a Snap-On KRA59C tool chest tonight. I paid the going market rate around here for this sort of chest in this condition, so it wasn't a screaming deal or anything, but I'm satisfied with it.

I've been looking for this specific model for a while now, as it's the matching top box to the KRA380D roller cabinet I've owned for 30 years; in fact, it was built the same year so they're basically a perfect pair. :) It has scrapes and scratches so I may think about painting it this winter (my roller cabinet is more or less pristine) but I'll get it cleaned up first before I make that decision.

Fart-
That is a Starrett cast iron level. Not a machinist style- I believe it was for carpenters or general use. Where the middle bubble is, there should be an oval steel plate with a hole to view bubble thru. That plate is most likely stamped LSS CO. They still make that level today!

What size is yours? 12"

This weekend I hit some sales. The first was a bust - 7 AM start, but with four people waiting outside the woman answered the knock on the door with "We decided not to have the sale."

The second was a moving sale that netted the Palmgren vise and Proto soft hammer for $5.00. The vise grips were part of a buy at the next sale, a TOO I found when a woman was posting a sign on a stop sign post. She was moving because her house closed too fast, and selling everything cheap. I got the vise grips, a large wheelbarrow in good shape, two extension cords (a 10-footer and a 50-footer) in excellent shape, a new square-nose shovel with fiberglass handle, and a hoe/culivator all for $10.00.

The TOO was found when I was looking for an estate sale that was in it's second day. The smaller items were half price, so the items in the second photo cost a total of $7.00. The Eagle oil can is brass-plated steel, the linesman's pliers are Blue Banner with a Williams diamond-W logo, unmarked diagonal cutters. The Plomb T-handle is rough, but fully usable. The P&C center punch and Proto Phillips #1 screwdriver are in good shape, but the unmarked cold chisel proved to have no maker's marks when I cleaned it up.

On Sunday I hit the local flea market. Photo #3 shows a wide puttly knife I bought for a special project, Barcalo DBE and scoop-type 3/4 combo, Stanley torpedo level, large Proto screwdriver, Proto and Cornwell chisels, 7/16 Pebble Plomb combo, unmarked cotter pin puller, Petersen Vise Grips, Wizard 1/4" ratchet, and 1/4 hex bits cost a total of $12.00.

Photo #4 are more wrenches from the flea. Craftsman short needle-nose, 3/4 x 5/8 short DBE Craftsman -V-, 5/16 P&C combo, 3/8 Craftsman ignition DOE, and 5/16 x 11/32 Barcalo DOE cost a total of $9.50.

Looks like Starrett doesn't offer an 18", the sizes jump from 12" to a 24" (which has a list price of $525.00.) However, the more I look at that one it think it has a 6" chunk missing off the one end.

Dude it's 9" to the center and one side is busted off. I'm calling it at 18".

The scroll work is the same but mine has more detail in corners. Maybe the thickness of the paint hides the detail. I bet they're using the same molds to cast the new ones. The 24 inch level looks like you could use it for porch balusters and only $525 a piece.

I picked up a couple 1/2-inch drive Duro-Indestro "-D-I-" sockets and a 5-pc set of WARDS MASTER QUALITY DBE offset wrenches at my Early Bird flea today. See Pic 1. I will be posting better photos of those on BB's DBE thread later.

I passed on an anvil. $375. See Pic 2. No markings visible, and it was pretty beat up. He had a bigger "American Star" in his truck that was out of my budget range. He also had one of those versa-vises and a mess of old monkey wrenches, hand vises, and the like, nothing exceptional rare, but let's just say he "wasn't from around here" in his prices. With a little friendly banter behind us, I found out my assessment was spot on: he was from NC and headed to an "antiques" fair in Connecticut. A gent at the table at the same time as me looking over some colonial era cookware who was a little harsher in tone with him than I was told him he should've kept going. Ouch!

I was trying to NOT go to more estate sales but I failed LOL. This is the same only sale I went to today. Spent $118, have already sold some of these tools to a buddy who was looking for them.

Pic 1: Wire brushes, Norton Bear Tex 6x1 wheels, snap gages, Stanley reversible ratcheting wrenches for my friend, green ball swivel base, Panavise circuit board ball swivel vise, Snap On, Williams, Proto Challenger and others. Sealed gallon of antifreeze for my buddy and a sealed gallon of Break Free PCL. The cast iron nutdriver stand is Walden Worcester and by going through various drawers I found 5 of the 7 Spintite nutdrivers. This appears to be fairly uncommon.

Pic 2: The drill boxes on the right hold USA HS drill bits that were barely used and are Cle-Line and I think Chicago Latrobe. The stack of 3 cases are all number drill bits.

Pic 3: The Craftsman, the socket set has a nice USA fine tooth ratchet. The folding Grep Wrenches are gimmicky but for a buck who cares LOL. The 15 and 18 MM wrenches are for my buddy.

Cast Iron! Wow, that’s nice. I see the nutdrivers from time to time (and always one at a time), but never a holder like that.

Hit two garage sales, two estate sale and a (very good) thrift store today, pulling the following:

Desoldering kit, Rock crusher manual (I have one, just no manual. Don't really need one but still) Vaco really long nut driver, Hinsdale ratchet, an old casting reel and a pull-zip toy car, cause it was neat. $10 for all of it, with a newish Craftsman ratcheting driver that I missed in the pics. In the upper right corner you can see what looks like a right-hand drive attachment, well guess what?

Long C Craftsman Roto-saw. Complete in original box with extra blades and instructions under the red display part! At $2 no way I was gonna pass that up.
That is all from the two garage sales. One of the estate sales looked OK, but was just sad. The other I only stopped at because I was in the neighborhood and I like the old ladies running it. Nothing at all interesting, but they told me they are going to have a huge tool sale next week, so I got that going for me, which is nice.
Then on my way home I stopped at my favorite thrift store. They have a great book section, where I found these beauties:

I am a book hound from way back, so these will go right into the collection. I mainly go for late Victorian to Pre-WWII fiction and these fit right in. Just under nine bucks for all three.

Nice. Didn’t you have that chain vise face?

Bluebolt- I found one of those Spintite racks over the summer, I think it was Stevens not a Walden. Cool find.

Had some socket finds today after much digging at a pawn shop Only pics for now. My first Koken, a 1/4” wobble extension, works kind of like a Snap On wobble plus. I was wondering if I’d ever run into any Koken.

Yesterday I picked up this 4" Wilton ($60, score!) and Greenfield tap and die set ($30). This is my first set, can anyone tell me any more about it?

Technically its a half set, Did I read NF fine thread markings? I've never seen a set with the tap drills and sets of three taper plug and bottoming taps in a set of sizes like that.

I have any number of sets of individual sizes with the three taps, but not a set with drills, tap and die handles like that. looks to be complete too, if no one has swapped out the taps and lost the set of three. Definitely a set intended for a machinist vs. an ordinary set with just taper taps. Nice find!

Yesterday got to a family run estate sale hour early, #1 in the door, "which way to the tools?"... "oh they're not ready yet, can you come back tomorrow?" Aghhh!....

Today picked up a couple Bonney & Matco wrenches at the first garage sale. Second one managed to get there at posted opening time and they're picked clean.."tools?.. oh those went first thing!" Number 3 has two huge signs: Rain or Shine... slight drizzle this morning, sale all tarped up, guy says to come back when the rain stops.......Aghhh!

That first one sounds all too familiar Rickster. Been there a number of times. One time I drove an hour out into farm country on a frigid snowy Saturday morning. They’d advertised in The Buffalo News a Snap On box and tools at their sale.

Got there bright and early, he was just opening up the sale. Big house in the country, maybe two other guys going up the driveway so chances looked pretty good. Enter the garage, three tables of ****, no tools whatsoever except maybe a shovel and old hand saw. Large Snap On box tucked nicely behind a wall in the corner. I asked what tools are available. The guy says it’s not for sale yet, my sons still have to go through the box first. I was like :wtf:. Just drove out here to see your over priced scrap metal for sale and a couple broken parts off your mower?

Slim pickings after skipping a weekend. Only tools I saw (despite any claims) were a plastic jar ful of asian sockets at the first stop... the rest came from TOO's...

I don't often buy selections of fasteners, but these two Plano boxes were dirt cheep and had a lot of stuff I tend to use, and some that I need for a project anyway.

Same place had the "grabber" style screws with drill points. I use a lot of these with and without drill points; as well as the aluminum angle brackets. the Zerex was a freebie at a TOO.

attachment.php

Two other stops got the plug in the wall CO alarm, small leather belt pouch, and the hour glass

attachment.php

Not a single tool... pretty slow here!

I don't know, and wish I did. I have an older version of the same box with a leather handle.

Found a bunch of vintage 1/2" drive pieces today. Need to clean and sort some more, but once I do, I think I'll have a bunch of extra Craftsman 'long C' and New Britain stuff on the classifieds. Hope I can finally figure out how to post multiple pics on a post, though!

Picked up some goodies this AM. First two (planned) stops had bupkis, though the pics online looked good. A TOO netted the double ended Crescent and the MAC runout set for a tenner. Next hit the Restore getting the two Proto LA DBE's for $2. Then my last planned stop got me that bin of sockets for $5. All but one US, including a half dozen Snap-on, about 20 long C Craftsman and a bunch of misc. Plomb, Thorsen, Wright, Blackhawk etc.
I then drove out to the middle of nowhere, for nothing.

I picked this pedestal last spring because its cast iron and old. i thought i posted it on g-sale but can't find the post. i know its in "off topic" but thought i'd put it here with update from smokstak posting about it.

here's the 1 i have.

Here's the new info about it,
A guy from the Netherlands responded to a post on smokstak about this pedstal being a stand for a Van Berkel flywheel meat slicer. Can u believe it!!!!???? Its worth some $$$$.

https://www.classicdriver.com/en/ar...butchers-who-dream-these-vintage-meat-slicers

Restored Van Berkel Flywheel meat slicer.

Wrenchguy, your first post about it is here.
I remembered it because I responded a couple posts later, thinking it might be from an outdoor table at a park. Not right about that, but just about nailed the decade of manufacture!
