I picked up a Whitney No. 2 punch at an auction yesterday as well as a huge pair of Bremin scissor shears. Anyone know where I can find specs on the punch such as what size dies it uses? Anyone know where I can find dies for sale? Checked eBay and there’s no reference except the no 2 and there’s only a couple of them. For Dies, they all reference the #5 or #20.

If you also know anything about the Bremin shears, would love to know more. One of the handles as a 90 degree bend at the end. I assume it’s used in a hardy hole on an anvil. But don’t know anything about it or how useful it is.

Go to the Roper Whitney site. They have the specs on the individual punches and dies. I have a number 8. You can still buy from them or if you have a lathe they are no too hard to make. I used O1 and torch hardened

I have had better success through the years with torch hardening by using A2 tool steel. It is more expensive than O1, but quenches in air after removing the torch.

That’s the thing. It doesn’t seem like roper whitney knows anything about the no. 2, like it’s not their product. Both the product list and search don’t have anything about no. 2. That’s why I’m wondering if American Whitney split from Roper some time back and took the model 1 and 2 with them, while Roper created the 5, 7, 8, 20, etc....

I think I may have some punches and dies to fit that #2 around here somewhere in my contingency materials.

If you find them and are interested in selling, please dm me. When I bought this, I didn’t realize it was missing the die.

I’m going to call American Whitney tomorrow and see what they have available. It looks like a great punch capable of 1/4” in 1/4”.

So I wrote Roper Whitney asking about the punch/companies and they said - “ The #2 is actually a W A Whitney product. They are now American Whitney. “. And provided contact info.

So they are separate companies with different but similar product lines.

I remember finding a site that was posted here that provided histories of various tool companies. Anyone know what that site is? I think I researched a vise company. I’ll check out the big vise thread and see if I can find it.
