Hollands 19 or Reed 109 (29 or 209 would also be cool, if they exist)

As we all pretty much are, I'm also intrigued by the big 8" and 9" vises. I save pics to my phone when I see them if they are really cool or rare vises. At some point I did save a pic of a Hollands 29 so they do exist! I think it was originally posted in this thread so my apologies to the OP for no attribution.

Iirc I’ve only seen one Hollands 19.
Not to prove you wrong but because I thought you'd like to see more than one.

Pics saved from Google search or off this thread at some point. Apologies to the OP for no attribution. 36638f66fcb6bfbb95f05517af15d82a.jpgca95d31f003e4f92b340fa757dc05bac.jpg

Dorset. England.
Dutch, not sure why....maybe because we were an English colony for years and therefore had many English companies here, but Records are all over the place...and cheap. Sure the odd guy wants hundreds for one, but so many for under $100, even a good number under $50. (I lost out on a No 8 for $20, someone beat me to it)

I would say for every 100 vises for sale, about 30-35 are records, 30-35 are either Mastercraft made in China, or unbranded made in China. Then about 10 made in Canada, 10 made in USA and the last 10 or so being European like Bison, York and some others.

Pretty much the same in all the old British colonies, our industry made a lot of money selling stuff to them, hence why you find so much British stuff, pretty much came to an end when we joined the European common market which the old colonies are obviously not a part of and now we have barely any industry left.

Saw a lot of vises at a swap meet today. Some of the more interesting ones were an Emmert pattern vise for $225 (sorry, no pic), this Massey Perfect ($125), and this large Hollands (didn't ask price). Saw a couple very nice Parkers, a swivel jaw Columbian 4" with lead jaw protectors, and a big (at least a 6" jaw) vise (can't recall brand, but was USA) for $100, but the jaws were missing so I passed.
I picked up the Reed 103 because under all the paint it looks like it is in really good condition. Not sure what I'm gonna do with that one.

Your oval slide vise is a millers falls brand. The vise should be stamped on the moving jaw on the top part of the jaw. 3d1300daf6722a139ebb3cf7932a2008.jpg

Looked the vise over today with a magnifying glass, no stamps to be found anywhere. Rusty65, do you have the rest of that page you show, with the model #'s? Is there a date on it?
Thank you.

Not Rusty65, but it's from a 1902 Manning, Maxwell & Moore catalog.

Long story short...My background is in industrial / facility maintenance, so I've been using many types / sizes of vises on a daily basis for a long time. About 7 yrs. ago I decided it was time to stop "working for the man". My very small shop needed a good machinist vise and when I google searched for used Wilton information, it brought me to a Garage Journal Thread - Wilton Vise History.

I've always liked quality tools, but I've never looked at any vise in a special way before. But something happened to me after I read thru the entire Wilton History Vise thread. I had an abnormal desire to own a few worthy vises that I really didn't need.

For some reason, I felt influenced most by the posts of GJ member autopts. His calm, collective comments and reasoning seemed to really resonate with me, kinda like the pied piper, if you will. Anyway, I started collecting some nice American Iron, but was having a hard time finding printed material to support my vise questions. So I started collecting ads and catalog scans for my own database.

I do own some (40-50) vises, but at this point my main vise hobby is about collecting vise data.

While, I used to give autopts credit for starting my vise interests, now I blame him for everything!

:lol_hitti Just like like any other addict, blame someone else. I started the same way looking for other tools and got a few vises with the deal. It kind of went down hill from there and only slowed after about 3X the amount of your collection.

Thank you for your collection, Fierljeppen! I think a few people were surprised (myself included) when you just whipped out that 1948 Prentiss cat showing Prentiss as a division of Charles Parker. That was awesome. Well done, sir! An asset to the board.

Speaking of the devil himself, since we're now blaming him for our illness...he just gave me another hit by kindly sourcing and sending me a suitable replacement base for a little homeowner's-grade Sawyer. Thanks Autopts!

Fierljeppen,

You don't happen to have any catalogs on vises from Utica Drop Forge & Tool Co. do you? I've got an image of Ware patent vise that I have that from them, but nothing else that would help me date that era that it was from. Post-1901 is about all I got!

I have to mention Autopts too, without his help I would have never sold over 5000 jaws for these old vises, his advise, knowledge and vise passion had a big effect in this thread and vise owners all over the Country. When I started in 2011 I contacted Autopts and with his help created my websites. His knowledge of Vises is second to none.

Fierljeppen, I want to thank you too for all your help on the Spreadsheet, you have filled in many blanks and helped me so much, owe ya a good dinner and a brew in Estes Park if you are ever in Colorado.

Nick (autopts) is a great guy, and I try to get together with him when I am in his neck of the woods. We had a vise trade several years ago, and I still use the one I got from him every day, a Parker 249X. A great vise. When I use it I often reflect on the trade and think about how Nick is doing.

I disassembled the Reed 103 - N that I bought today. Everything is/was covered in a very, very thick layer of multiple previous paint jobs, some of which the seller I got it from cleaned off. It was interesting to find a split nut holding the spindle into the slide. Everything came apart easily, no fighting rusted or damaged parts. Overall it is in very good condition, little sign of use. Perhaps the 1/8" thick layer of paint helped protect it. This one is gonna clean up well.

Autopts showed me how to get pics on the site, and it wasn't easy.---I'm a slow learner but he stayed right with me and coached me through it.---He sold me some darn nice vises at real good prices.---One was a Starrett 326 and one was a American Scale 25.---He knows his stuff.

I have to say also that Drivesitfar helped me a lot to.---I am practically computer illiterate, and if it hadn't of been for some fine gentlemen on this site, I probably would have lost interest real quick.

I've been traveling for work since 5am this morning and it's been one of the most hellacious trips I've had with the delays and you name it. However, reading the updates of everyone's kind stories of how Nick and others on this site/thread have been so helpful to each other has made the day quite acceptable. Good group of fellas all around.

Traveled today from Leavenworth, KS to relations near Ada, Oklahoma. Been making this trip about once per year (or more) for 30 years. Stopped at many of my favorite stores, with some interesting things. If you need to know more about location - let me know.

Well if one of those big 8" Rock Island vises is really on anyone's top 5, there's another one listed currently on eBay. The model number going from 78 for the 7" to 67 for the 8" really throws things out of whack but here's a catalog page that Fierljeppen posted recently that shows the vise.71b0fc4037bd0cfabd9ec2b341d8de9b.jpg122d71ec3168cd97685ca14483bdacf8.jpg

Oh yeah, I saw this tonight too. The seller has it listed as a Hollands pipe vise which it may very well be. It sure looks like a bicycle vise though like I had seen in this Prentiss ad at some point. What do you all think? chrisnazzy, you're just missing a "60 series" catalog page.

Someone should jump on this one if they can. Not many 8" Rock Island chipping vises out there and the price is very fair!

Thanks! Now the numbering makes more sense. After seeing one recently in person there really isn't any way to accurately depict just how ridiculously massive it is. I was told that it"s even big by 8" vise standards. That comes from someone who has seen the whole fleet of 8" vises down in Texas where that one is eventually headed.

I hit this garage sale yesterday. The guy had several vises. I passed on the big blue one it was just too large for me and the gray one was to ugly. I got really lucky that I was able to get him down to $75 for the light blue one that swivels in so many directions!!!

I think Mr. Wonderful is trolling us! He passed up two really good vises for the worst one, and on top of that paid too much. If this is true I vote for a BAN!!
